Three talented sisters with Stefanie hopefully being the next Danish junior to do well internationally.

Not as impressive results as Stefanie but does well against opponents her own age.

Stefanie

Pretty much wins everything in her agegroup in Denmark. Does very well when competing in U16 as well.

That's hard to say, Karen is certainly a great talent, but I haven't seen enough of her to compare her to Caro at the same age. I think she needs to mature more before she makes a real breakthrough.

Stefanie hasn't played much outside Denmark so quite impossible to say how good she is going to be :)

I believe she is only allowed to play another two ITF junior tournaments before her 16 years birthday in July. I guess she will use them on the quali for French Open and Wimbledon if she can make the cut-off but I am not sure.

If she plays other tournaments before that it will be on the womens ITF circuit.

InTheAir, Karen was in the doubles draw and in the schedule, but does you know why she did not play in doubles?

Will she play in Wimbledon also?

Yes, her partner was injured in her single so they had to pull out.

She will not play Wimbledon. I think she only has one ITF tournament left to play before her 16th birthday so she would not be able to play both Roehampton warm-up and Wimbledon quali. Changing from clay to grass takes at least a week so arriving directly for a Wimbledon qualy would not be well prepared. And staying one week in London practising on grass would cost a fortune in hotels and court fees.

So I guess it is matter of spending money on a limited tournament budget most wisely.

I'm not so sure about Karen how well Karen is going to do. She's 16 and still qualifying for junior Grand Slam's. Caro had won junior Wimbledon by that age. So she isn't any new Caro in making, but that certainly doesn't mean that she isn't going to be a decent player! I don't she'll go far, but top 100 seems reachable. 16 from Sweden, 8 from Finland, 3 from Norway, and just 2 from Denmark! We'll probably have to wait some more years to see if Wozniacki's success will have an effect on young Danish talents and attract them to the sport (as Björn Borg in Sweden some thirty years ago).

Ellen Allgurin from Sweden is an extraordinary talent, of course, and may well be the next top player from Scandinavia.

2010 is the last year as juniors for Ulrikke Eikeri (NOR) and Mai Grage, and I'm looking forward to seeing them on the senior level. Mai Grage has not played much on senior level so far. Yet she played some impressive matches for Denmark in Fed Cup in February 2010 winning two singles matches.

Btw: Mai Grage is having som success in junior tournaments in Italy at the moment. She was in a final in doubles last week, and she's in the SF in singles this week (the SF is probably played later today). I hope she'll keep her form and hopefully play well at some of the Grand Slams (maybe FO or Wimbledon). Good luck to Ulrikke Eikeri as well!

Mai Grage, Lyngby, spiller god tennis i ITF-turneringen kategori 1 i Croce, Italien.

I kvartfinalen vandt Mai 75 62 over Alison Van Uytvanck, Belgien, ITF 72.

Mai Grage and her partner Saisai Zheng (CHN) won the semi final in doubles but lost the final to Kremen (BLR)/Putintseva (RUS) 1-6 6-7(4).

Next week she's playing yet another tournament in Italy: 51st Trofeo Bonfiglio.
It's a very big tournament, and almost all the best Junior players are there. Ulrikke Eikeri (NOR) is also in the draw. Good luck to the two Scandinavians!

Mai tabte første runde 36 46 mod Caroline Garcia, Frankrig, WTA 420.

I looked it up as I didn't know these rules either. From ITF rules of tennis 2010:

In doubles, the team due to serve in the first game of each set shall decide which player shall serve for that game. Similarly, before the second game starts, their opponents shall decide which player shall serve for that game. The partner of the player who served in the first game shall serve in the third game and the partner of the player who served in the second game shall serve in the fourth game. This rotation shall continue until the end of the set.

Well done by Grage/Zheng so far. I hope they win!

From her blog at tennissporten.dk (http://www.tennissporten.dk/pages/posts/live-fra-paris-2992.php):

After four weeks of 'preparation tournaments' in Italy, and a week of exams, I am now finally in Paris to play the French Open. The four weeks in Italy benefited my tennis a lot. I have improved my rankings, and my game. I have struggled for a long time finding my real game, and mentally I've been completely lost, but over the last four weeks it has all come 'together'. It is a relief for me to finally feel that I am striking the ball well. My game has become much more relaxed and I even smiles sometimes on the court (it's not often that happens).

Even though I play well at the moment, I didn't have any big success in singles in Paris. I lost first round to Caroline Garcia from France, seeded 15, 6-3 6-4. I played well, but she was in charge all the time. She had an incredibly good serve that I could not figure out how to block. She was always dominating the rallies right from the start, and it was hard to win the points. I must be better to change my game from being defensive to being offensive, to defeat such a player.

I have however had better success in doubles. I play with my Chinese partner Saisai Zheng, whom I've played with many times before. We complement each other very well. My heavy groundstrokes and my surprisingly good kick-serve combined with Saisai's amazing net game have brought us in the semifinals - to be played tomorrow.

Girls under 18:

From tv2.dk (http://debat.tv2.dk/sporten/tour/lukket/message.jsp?thread=144254&message=886224):

Grage won in a Slovenian heating oven

For the first time ever the 18-year-old tennis talent played at a WTA tournament Saturday. It was in Slovenia, and her opponent was Olga Savchuk (WTA 152). When the Dane had won the first set 6-3 the Ukrainian had to retire because of the heat.

- It's huge for me. This proves to me that I can compete this level and it gives me extra motivation to proceed, said Mai Grage to tv2.dk.

Second round of qualifying will take place Sunday.

Unbearable heat
The match was played in a heat approaching 40 degrees [104 F], which had great importance for the outcome of the match.

- There were doctors on the court who measured our pulses. And then she could not handle the heat. I was difficult for me too, but I made sure to get plenty of salt and water before the match, and it helped me, said Grage to tv2.dk.

In the second round Sunday Grage plays against either Slovenian Tadeja Majeric or Ukrainian Anastasiya Vasyleva.

Perfect timing
Even if her opponent retired Grage still got a good sense of the game in the first set which she won 6-3 in just over half an hour.

- I was nervous in the first game when I was broken but then I played perfectly. I put her under pressure, got her out to run, and I made it hard for her, says Grage to tv2.dk.

Grage got a qualifying wildcard to the tournament, just as she has for the WTA tournament in Farum in 14 days.

Can we just write in the Junior thread untill Mai start playing many ITF/WTA, will she play US Open Junior?
I read she was alone in England for the Tournament before Wimby...she was excited 3 danes came and saw her match ;)
This is Mai's last season as a Junior - she can only play (as a Junior) until the end of 2010, so she'll need her own thread soon anyway. I might create a thread when I get the time if noone else does. US Open? I don't know. She has played AO, FO, and Wimbledon 2010, and I'm sure she'd like to play US Open as well. Unfortunately she has dropped in the junior rankings lately (#70 combined atm), so she may need to qualify? But I'm only guessing.

Are any of these young Danes like Grage, Ejdesgaard, and Barbat capable of making it into the top 100 or so someday?
Probably not - at least not within a couple of years - but I hope I'm wrong! Mai Grage has almost exclusively played on the Junior circuit, so it's hard to say something about her potential. A SF at Roland Garros this year (in doubles) proves she has some talent. Grage was also quite good at the Fed Cup in February winning two singles for Denmark vs. Latvia and Israel (allthough she also lost a singles match vs. Hungary 0-6 0-6 when she had to replace a sick Wozniacki). Grage has been part of a special training program under the Danish Tennis Federation for a long time, and her ambition (recentlty adjusted) is to be #10 in the world! Grage is probably the most likely of these three to reach top 100.

Ejdesgaards ambitions are more modest - #100 in the world in singles. But Ejdesgaard has always - even as a child - been a vey good doubles player winning a lot of titles.

Barbat is some sort of "lone wolf", trained by a very charismatic father who's not on good terms with the Federation. Barbat has played a lot of small tournaments this year, but often loses in the first round. Her first final was at a 10K a month ago. I can't really see top 100 in a near future, but she's probably a more likely top 100 than Ejdesgaard.

We probably have to look at the age group under 14 and under 12 to find the really big talents. Simone Alipieva, 12 y.o., is quite impressive at the U12 Nations Challenge in Italy right now. She has won all her matches (vs. Portugal, Ukraine, and Belarus) in both singles and doubles! She is really talented (almost Wozniacki-like), but it's difficut to predict how far her talent will bring her when she's still so young...

Caro's team will find new Caroline talent in the future...

During the Farum Tournemant many new talents will come and train in Caro's Tennis Academy, and cheer on Caro when she plays.

Next week before the Farum Tournament Caroline will again be No. 3 in the SEWTA Rankings, but there can go long before Denmark get a new TOP 100 player. Mai Grage is a new talent, but can she reach TOP 100, time will show...

Yes, but I'm not sure how the rules are interpreted? After Slovenia Open Mai Grage wrote this on her blog (http://www.tennissporten.dk/pages/posts/min-forste-wta-3212.php):
Now I need two more results to enter the WTA rankings
If she's correct then she still needs one more result.

Grage's first tournament was two years ago, so maybe it must be 3 tournaments within one year? I'm not sure though. But she'll enter the rankings after Copenhagen anyways...

Why it taken so long to post the Main Draw in England, don't they start play today?

No, main draw begins wednesday 28 JUL (both singles and doubles). It is a bit unusual to begin md so late in the week, and it must be a tough schedule for those players who goes far in singles and doubles (two matches a day!). Let's hope there are no rain delays, which will make the schedule even harder...

I guess main draw (singles and doubles) and wednesday's OOP should be out tonight (most recent OOP can always be found here (http://www.lta.org.uk/Global/Downloads/Results/2010/AEGON%20Pro-Series/Chiswick%20JUL/Order%20of%20play.pdf)). But yes, they seem quite slow in updating draws and results!

R1 main draw:

Lisa WHYBOURN (GBR) (1) Vs Malou EJDESGAARD (DEN)
Daneika BORTHWICK (GBR) Vs Yasmin CLARKE (GBR)
Mai GRAGE (DEN) Vs Alexandra WALKER (GBR)
Julia MORIARTY (IRL) Vs Tara MOORE (GBR) (8)

Malou and Mai are in the same quarter! But what a tough draw for Malou!
Grage doesn't play doubles here at Chiswick.

Mai has a good chance to get a MD win.
But she need to be in Copenhagen on saturday so she can't win too much... ;)

Held og Lykke Mai! :)

Cecilie Lundgaard Melsted (born 1995) got a Q wildcard for 220K Danish Open. Congratulations! I'm sure it'll be a great experience for her. Good luck.

QR1 Stephanie Foretz (FRA) vs. (wc) Cecilie Melsted

Foretz is ranked 183 on WTA. Cecilie Melsted has no WTA ranking which is hardly surprising being a junior player with no WTA or ITF matches on her cv! But she is still ranked #5 in Denmark on the women's ranking - actually above Mai Grage! The match will be played today, Saturday.

Match stats:

Cecilie won just 1 point (of 13) on her 2nd serve. But still a good effort from her, I think. Remember, she has never played any ITF or WTA match before, not even a 10K! Interview in next post.

Interview from the official e-Boks tournament site (http://www.e-bokssonyericssonopen.dk/nyheder/nyheder/2010/7/31/cecilie-melsted-tabte-men-blev-ikke-skraemt.aspx).

Cecilie Melsted defeated but never afraid

15 year-old Cecilie Melsted got a qualifying wildcard for the e-Boks Sony Ericsson Open 2010, enabling her to experience the highest level, which she did when she played a qualifying match Saturday at Farum Arena's center court. But it was just an experience and nothing more for the young Danish player who begins in ninth grade after the summer break.

Cecilie Melsted was defeated 6-1 6-1 by French Stephanie Foretz, but the young KB-player did not feel outplayed and had energy to smile when she talked about the great experience in her first international senior tournament.

"I played along quite well, but she could always hit some good shots on the important points," Cecilie Melsted said talking about the difference between her level and the level of her French opponent - the world No 183.

"I hope to be able to play at this level, but I must work hard to be better. But it was cool to play a WTA Tournament," said Cecilie Melsted, who was a bit nervous when she went on the pitch.

"It was a little weird when I came onto the court - I do not usually play on such big courts, but once you play, you don't look around. And I went out and took it as an experience," said Cecilie Melsted.
