Any reason why some people are allowed to have avatars bigger than 140x140?

Most likely a combination of both. Mods and admins plus former premium members.

Just for the bigger avatar? Being a mod is a responsible job helping out others in need on this forum (when it suits naturally). You must not take the job of our dedicated volunteers lightly. :p

I you wanna use a bigger avatar you should support the idea of 20kb even more. ;)
There has been an improvement but 9.8 or 11.7 is not such a big difference. 20 on the other hand would allow us to use perfectly clean avatars without any flaws. That would be great.

The larger pixels avatars, of course are allowed a larger kb size too.

I never had any problems staying under 11.7kb with a 140x140 avatar, so :shrug:
