Nicole has reached at least the QF in 3 of the 4 tournaments she has played this year. I hope she can have a good run here. It will be tough with everyone playing.

She will play her 2nd round match on Friday or Saturday.

Good luck Nikki. :yeah:

Any idea on what seed she will be?

Vaidisova
Mar 16th, 2007, 03:44 AM
If they use rankings after IW then I guess she would be seeded #8.

Excerpts from article on Nicole's last time playing in Miami back in 2005 (against Ana). Remember this? :p

Tears & tantrums from teenage brigade

It was a case of tears and tantrums on court number six at the Nasdaq-100 Open on Sunday.

Watching Vaidisova is a draining experience, with enough highs and lows to last an entire night in Miami's exuberant South Beach region.

She was ranting, shrieking (but not grunting) and then, after being broken for 6-5 in the second, came the sudden tears.

Her body was shaking and her face was buried in the towel.

When she rose from her chair, her face was cherry red, and the ballboy at the net - the only person face-to-face with her during the changeover - looked visibly shocked.

Tears in tennis have flown for years but to see them during a third-round match, in such an innocuous setting as Miami's Court Six, was quite perturbing.

After the match, she refused to shake the umpire's hand, annoyed at an incorrect line-call in the second set tie-break, and stomped off the court.

Ack! Bad memory! Fortunately, her on-court attitude has improved quite a bit since then. She's still got a somewhat fiery on-court temper of course, but she does a much better job of managing her emotions and keeping them under control. Heck, Federer (of all people) was reportedly throwing tantrums and smashing rackets when he was a kid, and look at him now!

She had a lot of pressure on her.

She was young, only 16.

She had all of the IMG people watching her and she wanted to win so bad.

Mar 19th, 2007, 07:15 PM
Nicole will face Krajicek or Tatishvili in 2nd round.

Then likely #26 Medina Garrigues in 3rd round (or maybe Azarenka)!

Patty is the likely opponent in 4th round.

Then either Maria, Serena, or Venus in QF.

Nicole should be OK with the 2nd round match. Misa has had a bad start to the year.

If she plays Vika in 3rd round it would be interesting. Vika beat Nicole in Memphis last year so I'd like for Nicole to get some revenge if they do play. Then it gets tougher from there...

Well done Nicole! :clap2: Looks like Azarenka didn't play well at all (only 5 winners?!? -23 differential?!?). Overall, Nicole did well on her own serve, even though her 1st serve % was on the low side, which allowed Vika to put more pressure.

Dushevina is having a great tournament so far (5 wins in a row), but I don't think she has much of a chance against Nicole. We're getting closer to that Nicole vs Maria match I'm hoping for

I just returned from Miami yesterday. I had a couple of chances to see Nicole this weekend, which was super. I'd never been to the tournament before, so when I got there Saturday morning, I was wandering around down by the practice courts near the grandstand looking at a map and trying to figure out where I was going. I brushed shoulders with somebody, and when I look up to apologize, I'm staring right up into the face of Nicole. It took a minute for it to register--usually, you see these players on TV and you don't think you're ever going to be that close to them. I turned around to apologize but she was already walking away, with her step-dad, and all I could say was "That's Nicole Vaidisova!" Later, I watched part of her match against Krajicek, and in the third set, she was playing pretty well.

Sunday, I desperately wanted to see her play, but couldn't tear myself away from Masha/Williams in the Stadium. Whoever scheduled them both at the same time she be shot. I did watch her warm up for about a half hour or so with step dad around 10:30. That was pretty amazing. Got a few pics and a little video of that. Her step father is really animated on the practice court--totally opposite his demeanor in the stadium during the matches. He really gets after her. Not angrily or anything--he just really makes her work. Put her through the paces at the net and baseline. To me it looked like they were tweaking her mechanics a bit on low forehand shots.

Really wish I had gotten to see her match against Azarenka though.

Nice to see her playing well--I wish her good luck in the next round, even if she plays my fave.

Purely by accident. While I got to see some exciting matches, it was things like that that really made my trip down there so special. It still amazes me that the players are so accessible. But I have to admit--it wasn't all bad brushing past a tall, pretty blonde who just so happens to play a pretty awesome game of tennis. I really want to see her succeed--i.e., win majors.

I noticed the same thing about her step-dad while watching her practice last year. They seem to make a good team.

I hope so. I'd love to see Nicole spank Serena tonight. Wish I was there to see it live.

I think one reason Nicole doesn't use the on court coaching so much (if at all) is because her step-dad really seems to go over everything with her thoroughly in the practice. It isn't just a hitting session. He's definitely teaching her. Given that, it's probably only redundant to go out there and tell her to do X or Y again. In the long run, having her figure out how to win matches by herself may make her a much better player. I think they have the right idea, and the right chemistry.

The match wasn't shown live on TV where I live , so I didn't actually see how things happened, but the stat that strikes me the most is the break points saved:

5/5 (Williams)
1/4 (Vaidisova)

It's all about playing your best on the big points. Few people do this as well as Serena Williams. Not being able to take advantage of the 0-40 lead at 4-3 was obviously crucial. And then the player who didn't break gets broken in the next game. I've seen that happen many, many times. It's a mental thing.

hi all fans, we can together forget on MIAMI, it's out... "good" tour from Nicole, she lost to Serena, but after big fight in second set, where nicole was down in her game after didn't waste 3 bp's, Nicole is only 17 and she can play till she will be 27, so don't be cruel, she has much time to do big things(GS etc.), Without Paris Nicole was always between THE BEST 8(quarterfinal) and Nicole reaches her the best rank #8, so we must wait, I think it's certainly better be consistent and not win one tour and than loses to other opponents in early rounds... so Nicole has great season, it's shame that she had to play against Serena... but Nicole must work on her mentally and try to be very focused during break points because I don't know what always happen but Nicole can't win break pts...

OK, now that I've had a chance to see the entire match, here are a few more thoughts...

Not much to tell about the 1st set, except that Williams was serving big, playing aggressive while making few UE, and that Nicole was playing poorly on her own service games. Thus the lopsided result.

2nd set was a different story. Serena's level definitely dropped a notch or two, while Nicole was serving MUCH better and making less UE. That is, up until that 0-40 lead she had at 4-3. Nicole made 3 BAD errors in a row. Instead of making Serena earn it by having to hit aces or winners, she totally let her off the hook. This was a HUGE missed opportunity. There would likely be no 2nd chance. Nicole knew it and remained upset after that. She lost her concentration, served badly for the 1st time in the set, and was broken quite easily. Serena closing out the match at 5-4 was just a formality.

Serena may move better than Nicole, but it's her mental edge that got her through in 2 sets. Even though some of her off-court comments have irked me in the past, I have to say Serena's behavior during matches is in general exemplary. Yes, Nicole is still young, but she needs to get tougher between the ears if she's to start winning these big matches more frequently. But how exactly do you do that? Improving the mental aspects of tennis is obviously much less straightforward than working on serving technique, court movement, shot placement or physical fitness. Experience is certainly an important factor, but some of it may well be an innate quality. I'm not a sports psychologist by any means, but I do hope there are effective ways of teaching a player how to cope better with high-pressure situations. From what I can tell, Nicole is a smart girl, as well as an eager learner, and motivation is unlikely to be an issue with her.

OK, enough ranting for now... ;)

Derek.

Ok here's the report

2R: Nicole vs. Krajicek

Nicole was so bad the first two sets. :tape: Errors all over the place and I was so nervous in the 2nd set. :o I thought she was going to lose 2R. :help: But she picked up her play when it really mattered. Her groundstrokes were crap. If Nicole didn't have a good serve she wouldn't have won this. :o In the 3rd set she really started to play much better and she looked so relieved when she won. She was swarmed by people after the match. :p

----

3R: Nicole vs. Azarenka

Nicole was really solid the whole match, but started a bit slow. Azarenka wasn't as aggressive as usual so Nicole took charge and it was just a matter of her keeping her errors down which she did nicely. :) Solid win. Good serve, forehand was .

----

4R: Nicole vs. Dushevina

In the first set she was really solid. Dushevina was only winning games because of Nicole's errors, I mean she really couldn't hurt Nicole. In the 2nd set Nicole's errors came again :tape:, but she kept it in the court when it counted and won.

---

QF: Nicole vs. Serena

:tape: :help: :o

---

In conclusion:

Nicole's serve was good, but both groundstrokes were shakey in long rallies.

I got her autograph when she was walking through the foodcourt after finishing practice. She was really nice. :)

I agree with you, Spiritof. :yeah: Nicole needs to learn how she could handle the situation when she's playing against top players. That's exactly what she missed when she faced Kuznetsova. She was dictating most of the points and won the first set with a magnificent ease.Suddenly, she became rusty on the second set and lost some break points which cost her the match. She do this all the time since the last year.I believe her "choke" in Roland Garros was not a anomaly. It was the real Nicole.I'm not negative because of course, you can change all these little worries. But we should wait before saying she will win a big title.
Plus, look at her draw. She has tough draw most of the time.A lucky win like Ana and Anna will be a prefect start. :yeah:!

Did Nicole use the on-court coaching in Miami?
Thanks Derek.:)

Hmm....I don't really like that.I hope it was the last time to be honest.Still no interview? I would love to read what she has to say about this loss.

Nicole used on-court coaching a few times in her earlier rounds too.

SONY ERICSSON OPEN (Miami, Florida, USA; outdoor hard; WTA Tier I)
================== http://www.sonyericssonopen.com/ (http://www.sonyericssonopen.com/)

NICOLE VAIDIŠOVÁ [8,EF]:
1r bye
2r + Michaëlla Krajíček, 4-6 7-5 6-2
3r + Victoria Azarenka, 6-3 6-3
4r + Vera Dushevina [Q], 6-2 6-4
qf - SERENA WILLIAMS [13], 1-6 4-6

With another good, solid quarter-final result in a Super Tier I that she missed last year, Nicole improves her #8 ranking from 1856 points to 1981 points, which puts some distance between #9 Jelena Janković (1867) and #10 Anna Chakvetadze (1847). And with #7 Nadia Petrova defending Amelia Island this week, Nicole could really close the gap.

Derek. (http://www.wtaworld.com/showpost.php?p=10414446):
>>>
In conclusion:

Nicole's serve was good, but both groundstrokes were shakey in long rallies.

+ NICOLE VAIDIŠOVÁ [8,EF] d. Michaëlla Krajíček, 4-6 7-5 6-2

A lot of players have talked about how hard the transition is from Indian Wells to Miami. Nicole had a scrappy first set, but was never behind (in games) in the second and third.

Interestingly, Krajíček is a Czech name, although if Michaëlla were Czech, her surname would be the feminine form, Krajčová!

First set
---------
VAIDIŠOV * *__@*___ 4

Michaëlla serving 3-4: held after saving break-point.
Nicole serving 4-4: broken after a quadruple fault.

Nicole serving 3-1: 40/15, then lost 4 points in a row to get broken.

There was a short rain-delay (less than an hour) with Nicole at 4-6 *4-4.

Nicole serving 0-0: held to love with 2 aces.

Third round (Sunday 25th March)

+ NICOLE VAIDIŠOVÁ [8,EF] d. Victoria Azarenka, 6-3 6-3

Nicole overpowered her fellow 17-year-old with a W:UE ratio of 24:30 to Azarenka's 5:28.

Derek. (http://www.wtaworld.com/showpost.php?p=10414446):
>>>
Nicole was really solid the whole match, but started a bit slow. Azarenka wasn't as aggressive as usual so Nicole took charge and it was just a matter of her keeping her errors down which she did nicely. :) Solid win. Good serve, forehand was .
<<<

First set
---------
VAIDIŠOV _@* * *@* 6
AZARENKA @__* *___ 3

Nicole serving 0-0: broken with a double fault.

Azarenka serving 1-2: 0/30 -> 30/30, 30/40 (BP), 40/40, ad N (BP #2), Deuce #2, ad N (BP #3), Deuce #3, ad A, held.

It can be a real momentum-switcher when you waste so many break-points in a game but don't break...

Nicole serving 2-2: 40/15 -> 40/40, ad N, Deuce #2, ad A (BP), Deuce #3, ad A (BP #2), Deuce #4, ad A (BP #3). Nicole saved it with an ace! Deuce #5, ad N, held.

...but now Azarenka's the one carrying mental baggage.

Azarenka serving 3-4: Double fault. 0/40 (3 BPs) -> 30/40, broken.
Nicole serving 5-3: 15/0, 15/15, 30/15, 30/30, 40/30 (SP #1), Nicole won the first set 6-3.

Quarter-final (Wednesday 28th March)
-------------

- NICOLE VAIDIŠOVÁ [8,EF] lt. SERENA WILLIAMS [13], 1-6 4-6

This should have been Nicole's first-ever meeting with Maria Sharapova (except for a World Team Tennis rubber in July 2004, in which the 15-year-old Nicole beat the newly-crowned Wimbledon-champion 5-3!), but I don't feel too bad about this scoreline after Williams hammered Maria 6-1 6-1 in the previous round! :o

Indeed, it could have been a very different story if Nicole had converted one of the three consecutive break-points she held with Williams serving at 6-1 3-4 (0/40) - a much tighter situation for Williams than the final scoreline implies.

Steven Wine, AP Sports Writer:
>>>
One day after routing Maria Sharapova, Williams won her first set in 25 minutes but struggled through much of the second. She trailed Vaidišová 3-4, love/40, then won 13 of the final 14 points, including aces on the final two points.
<<<

www.wtatour.com (http://www.wtatour.com):
>>>
Williams, the No.13 seed at the $3.45-million event, beat out No.8 seed Nicole Vaidišová in the feature night match, 6-1 6-4. The American cruised in the first set but encountered some resistance mid-way through the second set, going down 0/40 serving 3-4; but she won five straight points, then broke to 15 in the next game, and served the match out at love, closing with two consecutive aces.

Williams is now 2:0 Vaidišová, having pulled off a more complicated two-set win in the Australian Open semi-finals earlier this year. She faced a set-point down 5-4 in the first set and nearly allowed a 5-1 second set lead to evaporate during a 7-6(5) 6-4 win, before crushing Maria Sharapova in the championship-final, 6-1 6-2.

The Sony Ericsson Open is quickly becoming somewhat of a reverse déjŕ vu of the 2007 Australian Open for Williams. In the fourth round in Miami she defeated Sharapova, and upon beating Vaidišová she set up a semi-final encounter with the event's No.14 seed, Shahar Pe'er, whom she beat in the quarters down under.
<<<

PA SportsTicker:
>>>
In the women's draw, 13th seed Serena Williams followed one shockingly easy victory with another as she dispatched eighth-seeded Czech Nicole Vaidišová, 6-1 6-4, in a quarter-final matchup.

One day after rolling to a 6-1 6-1 victory over top seed Maria Sharapova of Russia, the reigning Australian Open champion was facing triple break-point at 3-4 in the second set.

But Williams stormed back to win five straight points - three on aces - to hold serve. She broke Vaidišová, and served out the match as she continued her march through the draw.
<<<

Steve Keating for Reuters:
>>>
Serena Williams stayed on course for a fourth Miami-title with a ruthless 6-1 6-4 win over Czech Nicole Vaidišová in the quarter-finals on Wednesday.

After disposing of top seed Maria Sharapova in the fourth round, Williams made quick work of Vaidišová, overwhelming the 17-year-old in just 67 minutes to advance to the last four.

Playing her first tournament since lifting her eighth Grand Slam title at the Australian Open, Williams has grown in confidence with every match, underlining her determination to return to the top of the world rankings.

Williams raced through the opening set, but met resistance in the second when the eighth-seeded Vaidišová threatened to seize control, securing triple break-point at 4-4.

But the young Czech failed to capitalise, and Williams immediately made her pay, recording the decisive break to go up 5-4, and winning 13 of the final 14 points to close out the match.

Williams quotes
---------------

{before the match}

"You know what, it's easy [to keep myself motivated] because Nicole Vaidišová is a good player, and she's, what, No. 6 in the world or something like that. Here I go again. I have to play another top-ten player who's playing great tennis. This is a [fourth-round] win; this isn't the finals. I have to be ready for the next round."

{after the match}

"She did play me tough. I was expecting her to play exactly the way she played me in the second set. That's what I was expecting for the match, so I think when her coach came out, maybe he told her some things to try, and I just don't know what happened, really. I started making errors.

"I just went erratic. I started missing shots and made a lot of unforced errors. My ball started flying. There are no excuses. I just starting playing crazy.

"I play tough when I'm down; I can always count on my serve.

"I got more fired up [as the match went on]. I guess I think that's how I always play in general. I start out calm. I don't like to start out first point, 'come on,' because to me it's just the first point, and if someone does that against me, I'm like, 'It's just one point; you have 60 other points to win here.' So I like to work myself into a "come on," or into the match."

[Re. getting five first serves in from 6-1 *3-4 (0/40)]
"It was smart more than anything. My first-serve percentage was really low up until that point. And I looked on the screen, I could see I was in the 40's at one point. So it was like okay, this is crazy. And I guess I thought, 'okay, well, maybe I should get some first serves in and see what happens if I do that. Come on, right now, five aces!' Yeah. Always. Five big ones.

"Well, the first one wasn't an ace. I was like, 'Okay, next four aces.' Then okay, I think I got aces on the last two, but I'm always thinking at that point just, 'It's your serve, relax, it's not like you're returning.'"

[Nervous at 0/40?]
"No, not at all. I mean, it's like Roger [Federer], at the end I would be extremely nervous. But no, it doesn't make me nervous at all.

"This racquet I'm using is the K Factor, which is just the most amazing racquet in the world. The K Factor is the bomb, and you can't go wrong with it. No, I'm really being honest. I love my racquet. It's the best racquet out there. I was at 113 square inches, I think. Now I'm at 105 - huge difference. And I'm actually able to generate a lot more power. Not only that, the K Factor enables me to have a lot of control, and it works out amazing.

"I don't like on-court coaching. I hate it. The only reason I use it is because I may as well. I don't want my opponent to have an advantage. But I think it takes away from the integrity of tennis.

"I mean, for hundreds of years, tennis has been that sport that's just... you think of Wimbledon, you think of clean, you think of pristine, you think of two players that are there to compete. That is the beauty about tennis - you're on your own. You don't have that with basketball or football or any other sport. It's all about you when you're out there. Maybe when you're playing doubles it's a little different, because you have a teammate. But for the most part, tennis is an individual sport - that's what I love about it. I love being down 2-5 in the second set, lost the first set, and being able to figure it out and come back on my own, because I think that is what tennis is all about.

"You have to [figure it out]. That's what I love about the sport. There's been numerous occasions where I've been out and down, and I've lost first sets horrible - I'm fighting to come back. And I have one set that's easy, and then my opponents come back. That's what makes tennis so beautiful: is the fact that it's only you out there. It's you versus your opponent, and it's your opponent versus you. Those two people, for that moment in time, and no one can take that away.

"Obviously it didn't help [tonight] because I played worse, so I'm going to have to start paying attention better. I wrote down something that he said that I was thinking about, that I already had in my notes, and I wrote it down again. I have to refer to my notes."

[Re. Hawkeye]
"I think I had a false challenge. I thought that ball was out, but I guess I was wrong. I like the challenge-system enough. I mean, if it wasn't there, I wouldn't care. It is what it is; I don't really care one way or the other.

[Re. boycotting Indian Wells, even though she could be suspended for doing so in 2009]
"I need to have a sit down and pow-wow with Larry Scott [WTA Tour CEO], because we haven't had a chance to talk about it. But I can guarantee you the chances of getting me to Indian Wells are slim to none, unless I'm not going to go back. I have no interest in going. It's just how I feel. And I think anyone that went through what I went through would feel a similar position."

Nicole's next WTA tournament is Charleston (week of 9th April).

One would also expect her to play Fed Cup for Czechia against Slovakia at Bratislava, which promises a mouthwatering rubber against Slovak captain Daniela Hantuchová (the Czech captain is Nicole's stepfather, Aleš Kodat). The World Group II first-round tie takes place on 21st & 22nd April (Nicole's last day as a 17-year-old, and Daniela's last as a 23-year-old).
