LMAO @ Maria's volleys. She's #1 in the world, I repeat, #1, and both pictures show her stepping into the volley with the wrong leg... seriously, wtf? That has to be the most amateur looking technique I've ever seen from a top player on any shot.

To answer Dan's limited and ignorant observation: when hitting a volley, a player of any level is supposed to step across their body. For a righty, this means stepping across your body with your left leg to hit a forehand volley, which Sharapova is clearly NOT doing in this photo:

http://us.news2.yimg.com/us.yimg.com/p/ap/20070307/capt.cafs10303070108.duel_in_the_desert_tennis_caf s103.jpg

It leads me to believe that it's not Sharapova's fault she is horrible at net. I don't think she was ever taught how to properly volley, which is freaking insane. Tennis 101!

The next picture is even worse. Sharapova is opening her stance with her left leg to move around the ball to hit a forehand volley, making her look like a hot mess if I ever saw one. I suspect her backhand volley is even worse; otherwise she wouldn't find herself about to tumble into the doubles alley just to hit what is sure to be an awful forehand volley. Nice limp wrist, too!
http://i15.tinypic.com/40o6nfm.jpg

You can bash Hingis' serve all you want, but when you do, please post pictures of its obvious technical incompetence and say more than "it sucks", k?

her grip is wrong to it should be the same one she uses when serving (hammer grip), but well it isnt her forté and everyone knows that. obviously in the weird pic where everything seems to be lacking technique she was caught off guard as she isnt used to play volleys. if it doesnt come instinctively and you're at the net you have so little time to prepare and play a great volley. but its not like she's played a lot of doubles either hehe (she's got herself some titles though :p) her swingvolleys though are just as effective and she hardly misses them, so she still has the chance to come in and put a ball away. it would just be so much easier if she knew how to volley, when to come in, where to go and where to to be after hitting the volley.

still i would have loved to watch that match :/ and to know who they played against.

You raise a good point actually...I wonder if Masha was ever taught a traditional volley. She wouldn't be the only one, and considering that (most of the time) her swinging volleys are great, it may never have been brought up, or fixed!

I am glad to see her at the net though, trying to figure it out. She will, especially if she keeps practicing with Martina!

After all the time Sharapova has spent working with Nick Bollettieri AND Robert Landsdorp, I seriously doubt that she was NEVER taught how to volley. Her dad and Michael Joyce obviously think it's better to spend that time teaching her how to interpret their hand signals.

This has always been an in joke or maybe an out joke in tennis for a while. I think she only decided to add the volley to her game a couple years ago and that was at the French, I think I heard her say that once but don't ask me where, I only remember as I thought, who adds a volley to their game?

Well I'm from the school of thinking that technique aint everything but when it comes to volleys thats probably the only thing that needs to be technically 100% correct or nothing happens. But look at Maria's forehand, its awesome, its penetrative, its incredibly fast but would any of you actually teach it? Of course not, but I've used it loads recently and it bloody well works. Her volley on the otherhand, dont!

It's strange how some players can surprisingly volley like Vee or Ree and maybe they were the exception in the power players....Maria's lack of volleying skills shouldnt really surprise us really. Why bother mastering a skill such as volleying when you have much greater strengths? She can win slams from the back of the court so why bother learning a few volleys or throwing them in just to please commentators and Mac and MartinaSnr? On the otherhand the argument is that Maria had built her game on one level, one which means she doesnt have the natural skill to waiver from it, ie play off tennis and still pull something throw, her own fans must admit that when shes good she's very very very good, but when shes bad she's very basic. Too much?

Definitely, I am sure she was taught how, but she never had to fully develop those skills (in matches), so that she kind of forgot the basics...I just wonder what she has to do to fully realize that part of her game?

Sorry Professor, I understand a hell of a lot more than you would care to think. You said originally that she was stepping off the wrong foot in both photos when she was playing the same shot off different feet in each but from a different position. The 2nd shot looks more a reflex shot with her weight going to her left covering the line. Hitting a BH volley from that position with the ball going crosscourt is near impossible. Its unfair to pigeon hole all Maria fans just because they arent fans of players with sometimes overrated 'crafty' styles.

Yes I observed that also, it must have been the most akward return for Sharapova to hit like that or maybe her instincts are telling her to wrong foot herself. Wouldn't it be so spectacular if Maria can do better at volleying, improve her shot selection and then play doubles with Martina and win many doubles grandslams??? I'm dying for a permanent Spice Girls already, M&M died off again prematurely :(

Its hardly a fight between fan bases...but people are saying Maria has no idea of the right techinique for volleying which is untrue.

For sure Maria can volley well enough to finish points out-right, she's got quite soft hands too.
She could have been volleying better if she practised more often.
Generally, she's just being inconsistent in that department of her game.

ok... we should settle who has great, good, or poor traditionsl volleys.
without being biased, tell me if you agree:

The Best: V Williams, Mauresmo, Henin, Hingis
Good: Petrova, S Williams, Clijsters, Schnyder, Kuznetsova
Not so great: Sharapova, Dementieva

please make additions...

Maria is the no.1 Im sure that she can volley. I have seen her vollying, she did well but her opponent; Michaella Krajicek is a better volleyer.
