Peer Joins Amelia Island Field

Shahar Peer, Vera Zvonareva, Lucie Safarova and Michaella Krajicek have joined the Amelia Island field. The foursome will play in the Bausch & Lomb Championships set for April 2-8.

The four join two-time Grand Slam champion and 2001 Amelia Island champ Amelie Mauresmo, reigning champion Nadia Petrova, Serbian stars Jelena Jankovic and Ana Ivanovic and Dinara Safina to compete for the $600,000 Bausch & Lomb Championships purse and prestigious Waterford trophy.

The 19-years-old Peer started the season advancing to the Gold Coast semifinals and followed that effort with quarterfinal finishes at both Sydney and the Australian Open where she lost a hard-fought three-set battle to eventual-champ Serena Williams. At Memphis, for the first time in her career, Peer was the No. 1 seed and made her way to a finish in the finals before bowing to Venus Williams. The 16th-ranked Israeli won three tournament titles in 2006 (Pattaya City, Prague, Istanbul), ending the season at No. 20 in the world.

Zvonareva returns to the Bausch & Lomb Championships as a two-time quarterfinalist (2004, ’05). Last year, the Russian returned to form by capturing titles in Birmingham and Cincinnati. She also won the U.S. Open doubles crown with Nathalie Dechy. Zvonareva opened the season advancing to the Auckland final and recorded a fourth-round finish at the Australian Open.

Safarova knocked off 2006 Australian Open champion Mauresmo at the Melbourne major en route to the quarterfinals. The 20-year-old Czech followed that effort beating Nicole Vaidisova, Svetlana Kuznetsova and Justine Henin to reach the Paris final, losing to Nadia Petrova.

Krajicek, the young sister to former Wimbledon champion Richard Krajicek, won her first singles title in 2005 at Tashkent to become the first Dutch Tour singles champion since Brenda Schultz-McCarthy. Last year, Krajicek added Hobart to her trophy case and at ‘s-Hertogenbosch, in front of her home crowd, she won the biggest singles title of her career.
