Yes.

Eighth-ranked Elena Dementieva pulled out of the Pacific Life Open on Wednesday due to a rib injury suffered during practice in Moscow.

Dementieva, a finalist a year ago, had a stress fracture on the right side. Doctors have told Dementieva that she could be out for up to six weeks.

“I feel very disappointed. I wanted to play here. I was in the final. It sucks,” Dementieva said. “Now I’m going to miss a couple of tournaments.”

Dementieva said the pain has been constant, making it hard for her to sleep and breath.

“There’s nothing you can do,” Dementieva said. “It just takes time.”

@ least she'll get to play a red clay event or two B4 RG. I'm sure Lena would trade some time out of the Top 10 for a Slam any day, so she's lucky in that sense that it happened now when she has time to heal and play again to get ready for RG and then the Big W.

That's my thought too. I was hoping they would be using the ITF's new rules of picking someone completely random from the final round of qualifying.

Will it be a direct replacement or will they change the seeds around because she withdrew in time?

How could she injure her rib during practice?

In more ways than you can count on both hands.

Just look at one way:

The ribs, and by extension the surrounding muscle and cartilage, are part of the core energy transfer system that helps transfer the engergy being generated from the leg drive and hip torque through to the shoulder turn/opening on a typical ground stroke. Given the power, pace of her groundies and how significant they are to her particular approach to the game, it's not hard to imagine and injury to the rib/surrounding area.

Anyway, just theorizing. I don't know for sure.

I'm kind of glad that she pulled out because if her arm or whatever part of her body is hurting, she shouldn't play and risk injuring it even more. Heck, Serena pulls out and rest all the time. Even though she'll drop out of the top 10, she'll pick it back up. I think this is a positive thing for Lena. Call me crazy, but I'm taking the fact that she's on an American magazine cover like NY Times Magazine as a very good omen. ;)

Dementieva withdraws from Indian Wells with rib injury
By Mark Lamport-Stokes
INDIAN WELLS, California, March 7 (Reuters) - Fifth seed Elena Dementieva pulled out of the Pacific Life Open on Wednesday because of a lingering rib injury.
The 25-year-old Russian, who lost to compatriot Maria Sharapova 6-1 6-2 in last year's final, has been replaced in the 128-strong draw by lucky loser Anastassia Rodionova.
Russian Rodionova will face Emma Laine of Finland in the opening round at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden, with Austrian Sybille Bammer moving into Dementieva's slot and getting a bye into the second stage.
"I was trying to practice but it was just too painful," world number eight Dementieva told reporters. "It's something which can happen when you over-use it."
Dementieva, whose injury forced her to retire in the second set of her Diamond Games second-round match against compatriot Elena Likhovtseva in Antwerp last month, expects to be out for up to six weeks.
"There's nothing they (doctors) can do," added the Russian, a semi-finalist at Indian Wells in 2000 and 2005. "Pain-killers don't really help.
"I really wanted to play here having got to the final last year. I did a lot of work before I came here but it's hard to breathe when you have a rib injury and you have pain even when you are not playing."
The first round of the women's event began on Wednesday.
