View Full Version : Do winners keep their trophy?

strictennis

Do winners keep their winning tournament trophy - the one where he/she will pose for pictures as well as kissing it?

Or they receive a smaller replica of the original handed? Or not even any but just prize money and memories?

Wait! Do they even get anything in the first place?

I know that for winning RG in 2000, Mary only got a reproduction of the trophy and has it at home. So I suppose that the same for all tournament?

no, winners only keep a replica.

the worst is wimbledon's men, the replica trophy is so small.

They get a smaller version.

Just on Mary again, when she won AO in 95, beacause she had previously gotten a runner up trophy from RG, of which you keep, she thought that the big throphy was hers... and as she walked under the tunnel, she was told to hand it over. She'd apparently gotten the furthest with the main trophy than any other player haha. She's such a blonde... but I love her!

Yes. Wimbledon's replicas are abysmal.

At least give them replica's the actual size of the original.

Hell, the Runner Up trophy's are bigger :help:

I tought that this happen with the GS's trophies...while all the other tournaments leave the tropies to the winner...probably I am wrong...

But anyway I see that many WTA tournaments often change their tropies (E.g. Luxembourg, Doha, Tokyo ecc.ecc) so...what happens to the tropies?

well imagine if you're Steffi and you have 22 of the full size ones around. What are you going to do with them? Smaller ones are more practical and cheaper.

Do you guys think they will let Masha touch the USO trophy again, whenever she'll win USO, or she'll be handled the replica directly?:tape: I think Masha will "accidentally" drop the whole trophy next time instead of just the lid and dented it, so that they'll give her the actual since they'll have to make a new one anyway.

Why they give so small trophies, I thought the one you recieve that's the one you get, so the next year you have to return the big trophy?

They don't even get it for the year.

They get it for the photoshoots only. It stays at the venue

Steffi doesn't keep her Grand Slam trophies at her home anyway. All of hers are in the office of Stefanie Graf Marketing GmbH in Germany, which, I imagine, must be large enough to accommodate even the larger sized versions of 22 Grand Slam trophies.

At the latest PDG in Antwerp they showed some of Kim Clijsters trophies. I am pretty sure these were replicas. One of them was a trophy with a whale the size of a pilchard, supposedly her 2005 IW trophy.
Also the other ones were tiny. And that is an understatement..

You get to keep the Oscar you win!

Someone here many years ago posted that they went to the International Tennis Hall of Fame Museum in Newport, where they at least then had some of the replicas on display, I think one of Steffi's French and one of Chris Evert's French. The person posted that one was almost full-sized next to the real Coupe Suzanne Lenglen trophy, whereas, I think the Steffi one, was like the size of one's fist. You can usually see the replica next to the real trophy on the table during the match, I have seen that in Australia and the French at least.

at least in australia you get a stuffed animal as well. i remember watching that antiques roadshow when they came to australia and a guy had a replica of the wimbledon trophy that norman brooks won in at the start of last century. because he was the first one from outside england to win it, they gave him a full size replica. and i think there is only two full sized replicas. btw, it was valued around $80,000 if u were interested.

Yeah, that's stupid. I know they like to keep one with everyone's names but they should still have a very big one for the champ to take home. I think the first Slam to do this will be more popular with the players.

If they don't WIN the trophy it shouldn't be advertised like that.

Next Grandslam should go like this:

We have the top players in the world competing to pose with the trophy for about 1/2 an hour.

Do they make or give and exact replica of the original for players who achieved something great in the Grand Slams, like winning it for the 5th time or 3 times in a row?

And by the way, I think Roger Federer can keep the Wimbledon trophy in his cabinet for the next 3-5 years. There's no one on Tour that can challenge him on the grass surface.... :help:

The bigger there are, it is more difficult to store, and if have many of them it could be a real problem to store them...

It isn't about the size of the trophy. It is about what it represents.

The reason why a lot of events keep the 'tournament trophy' is that it is part of the tournament and the winners' names are inscribed on the trophies.

The reason the replicas are smaller I assume is because a) it is cheaper and b) they want the original trophy to be the most prestigious. It represents all the winners while the smaller ones represent the individual winners.
