agreed

But I would NOT count Wozniacki out as yet... so it could be:

Sharapova/Jankovic
Wozniacki/Safarova
Dementieva/Petrova
Vaidisova/Kuznetsova

That's a match I'd love to see. It's a shame Anna had to retire against Hingis at last year's Roger's Cup. I guess we'll have to wait and see. :bounce:

so she won an ITF tournament and now she's ready for a Tier I quarterfinal? Hingis is not Morigami (nothing personal). so get serious.

Hingis beat Wozniacki 6-3 6-2 in Seoul last year, after winning 5 matches in Kalkutta the week before. As long as Hingis doesnt go AWOL ala Hantuchova in Doha, she'll win in straights.

I'm guessing:
Sharapova/Jankovic
Hingis/Chakvetadze
Ivanovic/Golovin
Vaidisova/Kuznetsova

For a "weak" field, there should be some interesting match ups :woohoo:

Sharapova vs. Jankovic
Chakvetadze (tough call) vs. Hingis
Dementieva (tough call) vs. Golovin (tough call)
Safina (tough call) vs. Kuznetsova

The toughest block of the draw is definitely the Safarova/Peer/Chakvetadze section, if you ask me, because they all have legitmate shots at making the semi's. HOWEVER, I can't see Peer or Safarova beating one another and then Chakvetadze. "All" Anna has to do is beat Kirilenko and the (likely exhausted) winner of the Peer-Safarova match. So that gets my nod. However, I think it's just as likely that Safarova or Peer will go through and flare out against Hingis. Chakvetadze has the better chance to reach the semi's.

Dementieva gets my nod because she wouldn't have to go through Vania King, Alicia Molik, or Aravane Rezai, all tricky potential 2nd and 3rd round opponents for Ivanovic. And, as we've said before, Ivanovic is more likely to have an off day in a 6 round tournament sooner or later. That said, Ivanovic has had some time off, and could show up looking very sharp out there. BUT, Dementieva plays well when she's rested, and she's athletic enough to force Ivanovic to make a ton of errors. Shuai Peng is a nice little warm up, too.

I gave Golovin the nod here mostly because I like her soft hands. She's been cursed with some crummy draws this year, and I'd like to see her make the most of this opportunity, especially since she seems to like American hardcourts, and especially since she has a lot of points coming off from Miami. Petrova's had a good year, but not a great year, and is the perfect candidate for Golovin to upset. I think there match up will be a highlight, and definitely dramatic. The IW crowd likes Golovin, and Petrova gives the impression of a monster when she's on court.

Safina was the last one that was difficult to call. I may be the only one in the world, but I love watching Safina play. It's like a train wreck; she plays this weird kind of versatile power game, but she just goes crazy now and then. The Vaidisova matchup will be the battle of crazy people, a contest to see who can keep it together the longest. It'll either be power tennis at its best or worst. At its best, I'd imagine Vaidisova will go through. At its worst, Safina. Her worst is nowhere near Vaidisova's worst, and I bet that's how it'll go. Again, Safina has the better draw. IF Schultz-McCarthy and Shaugnessy are Vaidisova's opponents, it'll be a huge-serving slugfest, and that can be exhausting for someone like Vaidisova. Safina, by contrast, could probably go out and run all day long.

All in all, I really like the way this tournament looks. I can see Kuznetsova making a run, same with most of the top half. Should be nice.

This is what I hope to be QF

Sharapova/Jankovic
Hingis/Chakvedatze
Ivanovic/Petrova
Vaidisova/Kuznetsova

With SF

Sharapova/Hingis
Petrova/Vaidisova

Hopefully a final thats will look like this:
Hingis/Petrova

*i guess you guys will react to why petrova (why hingis well look at my avatar), i just think petrova can last it with vaidisova even if most of the time she looks like she could implode.

Must I add Hingis rarely loses to a player ranked outside the top 60, especially who's still young, inexperienced and not at their full power and bloom. Unless an incident a la US open '06 takes place again where her form was atrocious she should make it to the quarters.

i dont know why people think zvonareva will beat sharapova (although its probably just wishful thinking). she couldnt get the job with the way sharapova was playing at AO and if sharapova is playing just slightly better than AO she should have no problem beating vera.

My Predictions for the Quarter Finals:

SHARAPOVA beats a disgruntled, injured JANKOVIC 6-3 6-4

HINGIS beats an exhausted PEER 6-3 6-2

a rested IVANOVIC beats an unsteady and error prone PETROVA 6-2 3-6 6-3

a focussed VAIDISOVA undermines a hesitant and under-confident KUZNETSOVA 6-4 7-5

For the semifinals:

SHARAPOVA overpowers a frustrated HINGIS 6-4 6-4

VAIDISOVA holds onto her nerve and edges IVANOVIC 7-5 5-7 6-4

And the final:

SHARAPOVA takes advantage of a nervous VAIDISOVA 7-6 6-3

Although Sharapova is always favoured to beat Zvon. I thought Shara. played pretty well in that match, the number of shots that were right on the lines were high ,if off a lot of them would have missed. Zvon. had breathing problems and had to have medical attention after, even the commentators noticed, in the later stages she can be seen taking deep breathes and time between points(not tears)so I think the whole thing at least evens out, but all we hear is Shara. was not playing well. Bepa was as crook as a dog when they met at the FO a couple of years ago, I want an investigation :) In all seriousness, I bet if it gets that they meet Maria wouldn't go strutting out there thinking "This will be just like pissing in a tin"
