If the WTA were to implement some kind of Masters Series, choosing the 8 most important Tier I's, which tournaments do you think should be included?

Current Tier I's:

Tokyo
Indian Wells
Miami
Charleston
Berlin
Rome
San Diego
Toronto
Moscow
Zurich

I'm torn, because I love the Tokyo event, but it's harsh to require players to compete the week after a slam. Also, Zurich is so late in the year it has such odd winners now and then, but at the same time, shouldn't they be rewarded for having a good Fall season? Tough stuff.

I think the WTA should have done this years ago. If I had any say I'd eliminate IW(not going to happen but this is my fantasy) and probably Berlin. I'd move Tokyo and Moscow closer together on the schedule if possible. It would look like this:

Miami
Charleston
Tokyo
Moscow
Rome
San Diego
Toronto/Montreal
Zurich

In reality it would probably look like this:

Tokyo
Indian Wells
Miami
Charleston
Rome
Toronto
Moscow
Zurich

In the 2010 Roadmap, the A tournaments will be mandatory.
4 of them will be 2 weeks. IW, Miami, Madrid, and probably one in China.

charleston, to me, is out of place.

if you took away charleston and tokyo, it would be like...

indian wells/miami
berlin/rome
san diego/toronto
moscow/zurich

each pairing has tournaments that are on the same surface. it makes sense.

but toronto is a weak tournament (not just because of last year), and it makes sense to get rid of it.

Toronto pwns. Montreal is weak.

It won't be dropped becuase it has the greatest one week attendance for all women's outdoor events. That equals money.

San Diego dies. Cinncinati in.

DUMB.

Eastbourne is the week before a slam. That guarantees its death amongst players.

Tokyo PPO is bad enough and its the week after.

Toronto always has great entrylists. Although there were a lot of withdrawls last year, san diego is the weaker tier1.

Same.

To be honest, I think it would be cool for the WTA to join the ATP Masters series

I think that would be best, too. Combined tournaments, add a mixed doubles draw...

actually the 8 Masters Series should be...
1. Tokyo
2. Dubai
3. Miami
4. Rome
5. Halle (have a tier 1 grass tourney )
6. Toronto/Montreal
7. Beijing
8. Zurich

Much more global would be better...1 tourney in each Japan, UAE, USA, Italy, Germany, Canada, China and Switzerland

I'd add all of these to masters series list. They're all great tournies in their own rights.

The main issue is the numbered of required tournaments. With 8 Masters, it's fine to miss one, because it will only marginally affect your ranking. With 10, if you only play 7, that's a big hit, and it sucks big-time to be injured and miss a huge percentage. Plus, then you'd be allowing fewer Tier II-IV tournaments onto peoples records, and that's hard on tournament organizers. If someone's incentive is just money, not ranking points, they're that much less likely to play.

 Players mainly do what they want even if tournies are manditory. You're right if there were ten it could hurt players who couldn't play all of them. I just like all the tournies listed and couldn't cut one out. :p

Tokyo is important for the Asian market and is the only big Tier One in that part of the world. I'd ditch Charlston and San Diego. That still leaves North America with three tournaments. That should be plenty.

Tokyo wouldn't be good considering it's the week after a Slam, and adding Charleston would mean that there's only 1 non-masters week around that time, which is a bit much.

That said, it'd be good to have an event in Asia...maybe Beijing.
