For all the talk that this is a weak field, it has the world # 1, three very hot up-and-comers (Chakvetadze, Jankovic, Safarova) plus really dangerous floaters (Kuznetsova, Hingis, Dementieva, Vaidisova, Safina), two of whom are on good rolls at the moment.

it's just that almost all the most recent slam winners are not playing. Henin, Clijsters, Serena, Mauresmo, Sharapova, Venus. All have won slams in the last three years and only Sharapova is playing. Favorites are Sharapova and Petrova. My next favorite would be Vaidisova.

ummm well she beat everyone else but camille pin in straight sets on the way to the final. She beat Clijsters, Chakvedatze. Both good players coming in to the AO in good form. And hingis couldn't close out Clijsters when clijster made something like 60+ UE. Obviously Sharapova's serve wasn't at its best but even with her serving problems she still made it to the final beating plenty of top players. i love how everyone keeps knocking Sharapova even though she made it to the final of the AO. And, she also beat Clijsters quite convingly (and clijsters was the 2nd or 1st favorite to win the tourney) in her semifinal. So I def. think she could win Indian Wells. Even if her 2nd serve was still the same as it was in the AO. ONly person who might give her problems would be ivanovic, or Vaidisova. Petrova, maybe but she has a terrible H2H against Sharapova, and always crumbles against her. The only time Petrova beat Sharapova was during the Year End Championships when Sharapova had already clinched teh semifinal spot and let Petrova win.

Well Justine really frontloaded her schedule to catch up after missing the australian open. She also wants to get back to #1 if you ask me. She picked Miami because there's more to improve on there from last year.

Venus and Serena don't play at IW for reasons I certainly won't disagree with.

Mauresmo and Clijsters probably don't want to be playing possibly 4 weeks in a row because Mauresmo plans to play a lot on clay, and Clijsters is planning on keeping injury free.

Sharapova can play 4 weeks in a row, as she proved last year. She really needs to do as well on hardcourts as possible because she doesn't plan on doing as well on clay. Though some would argue she should focus on clay more because she hasn't even won a title on the surface even though she's done surprisingly well at Roland Garros.

True. However, she didn't bitchslap either one of them in my opinion. And Clijsters left in worse form than she came in. Masha did annihilate one player (Rodionova? I get all the lower ranked Russians mixed up nowadays), but she's obviously not top 30.

Look, I'm the first one to admit that an in-form and on Sharapova would likely handle Hingis on most days...but she hasn't been in form all year so far.

On another note, I am not too convinced Sharapova is still the heavy favorite. On paper yes and should she find her good form she'l be; nonetheless, the past two tournaments she's played have been rather unconvincing. Her serve has greatly suffered and she's still to find her best form.

Furthermore, the possible and most likely candidates as winners are Maria, Svetlana and Nadia. Jankovic and Vaidisova have the best outside chances, and perhaps Hingis may step it up for a change especially with a favorable draw.

lol...you jerk face. Seeing as Venus hasn't won a tourney in over a year. And hasn't played a match in months and on top of that hasn't played a decent match in over a year. I'd say a little excitement over her memphis win is not unwarranted. She finally beat a young up and comer and more importantly she played well, no 50 UE, clean hitting, and good strong serving. I'd say if she can keep this form up, ppl better watch out in Miami.

I hope that my SUPER-FAVOR, Anna Chakvetadze, will win IW 2007.

But it's going to be hard for Anna.

Btw. Anna celebrates her 20th b-day today, March 5 :music:

Maria or Nadia. :help: at Nadia having the second fewest votes.

OMG...:haha:

Don't be too defensive. You really think Maria would be winning the poll significantly if the question was "Who do you want to win IW?" Seriously? :tape:

Where have you been? Certainly, if that was the question someone like Dementieva or Hingis would be leading by a large margin, not Sharapova.

Nadia has like three fans here, so naturally she will get only a few votes. :o

I'm not being defensive at all. I'm simply implying that Nadia has a better chance than most of the players listed. I never said she was the frontrunner or anything like that.

Sharapova hasn't been playing spectacular tennis, but she still reached the finals of the Australian Open with that kind of play. She should most cenrtainly be considered the frontrunner.

Nadia has like three fans here

And Nicole has two.

Anyways

I feel that most of the people who are now saying Maria is the one big favourite for the title, that it's impossible for her not to win it and so on, will, should she lose in QF or SF or something of the sort, be the first ones to bash her for failing to live up to "the hype", this when said hype is very much of their own making (cue the closeted Maria haters among WTAW's resident punditry coming in here to solemnly proclaim "She's the #1 seed, and that makes her the favourite" - don't bother). Maria haters are getting a bit more subtle nowadays.

Same with those people who say stuff like "Vaidisova is one of the few who can trouble Sharapova on this depleted field" [depleted field/weak tournament being WTAWese for "tournament the Williams sisters aren't playing"]. When Nicole crashes out spectacularly to Na Li or Golovin, they'll be here saying that the "overhyped brat" again "failed to deliver".

Yeah, as you may have guessed I'm overflowing with optimism at the moment.

All three of us are over 16 which disqualifies us from being in Nikki's gang. :D

I'm afraid it will not be happening at Indian Wells. Nicole Pratt looks destined to take out Na Li in round 2.

Exactly!

I refrained from saying it but this is the reason why I dislike threads like these.

Anyway, Corswandt, I'd really recommend that you open your eyes a bit more. Your saying that Nicole has only 2 fans is getting quite old (oh and you know I like you  ). Try to look at the signatures of people. I'd say she even has a bigger mini-fanbase than Maria. The reason I say mini is that the only problem this may not be visible to you is that it is very seldom that people have Nicole as their MAIN favorite, but certainly, look around, and you'll see she's part of many posters' 'other faves.' A contrast to Maria who I believe has a lot of fans who have her as main fave and not a lot who have her as 'other faves' (the ones you cheer for when your main fave isn't playing  ). I guess, with Masha, you either love her or hate her.

Let me whine. I'm in the mood for whining.

Several weeks on a diet of ALG, Schnyder, Kuznetsova and JH no longer H can make you lose the will to live. :help:

My top half contenders are in the same block; Peer, Safarova, Chakvetadze; The winner of that group will go to the finals.

My bottom half contenders will be Dementieva or Golovin vs Kuznetsova

For records, I'll say Kuznetsova will win the title over Safarova.

Upset picks: Pennetta over sharapova (3r), Mattek over Vaidisova (2r), domachowska over safina (2r)

two 1st round wanna see: Granville vs Pin, Pascual vs Pratt.
