View Full Version : Does anyone know about what happened between players as juniors?

I'm curious. I remember Jana Novotna saying she ended up facing Steffi in the European junior championships......I wonder who won between them back then? Was it the same as what we saw on the senior tour? Didn't Steffi/Monica & Natasha Zvereva all win the orange bowl in Florida? I wonder did they have to play against each other at all? Also, weren't Kournikova and Hingis no. 1's as juniors? It's kind of interesting to think of what happened on the junior tour as a pre-cursor to the senior tour events. After all, at the end of the day, tennis is as much a mental game as anything.

It sure didn't help Anna that Martina had wiped the floor with her a couple of times when they where juniors.

i wonder what Venus and Serena's junior tennis record was like. I know they didn't really play juniors but am curious to see how they did. Did Serena even play juniors? I know Venus has a huge winning streak in California that still hasn't been broken to this day.

I know Nastya and Lena have been playing since they were 7 or so. Supposedly Lena would spank Nastya during practice, but Nastya always won the real matches. They used to play for slices of pizza.

That might explain that while Lena has spent more time in the Top 10, Nastya pretty much owns the head-to-head and has the biggest prize, an FO trophy.

there's a hige diff playing in local CA tourns and the proper junior circuit.
local CA jr tourns would struggle to beat the bagel girls.

When Serena was four and a half, she won her first tournament, and she entered 49 tournaments before the age of 10, winning 46 of them. At one point, she replaced her sister Venus as the number one ranked tennis player aged 12 or under in California. Venus was undefeated.

Lol, so even back then Serena was pushing Venus out of the no.1 spot. At what age did Richard pull them out?

Was Martina Hingis also no. 1 in juniors??
I know she won Juniors RG twice in a row, aged 12 & 13,the only one to defend the title.

Yeah. Hingis is widely regarded as the most prolific and prodigious girl junior ever. Titles came so easily to her, although she lost her last major final at the 1994 U.S Open to Meilen Tu.

Famously, she defeated Kournikova 0&0 or 0&1, something like that, smashing her racquet at the loss of one game (or one point?).

her record wont ever be broken
as you can no longer play U18 junior events before the age of 13.

Jelena Pandzic was supposedly really good, I wonder what happened with her?
So many top juniors who never break through... I think Szavay and Azarenka will come into that category too.
