India's Sania Mirza was ruled out of action for at least four weeks on Saturday after undergoing surgery on her right knee.
The 20-year-old world number 46 suffered the injury during her first-round victory over Italy's Romina Oprandi in the Qatar Open on Monday and returned home for treatment.
She was scheduled to participate in the Pacific Life Open in Indian Wells next week.
"She suffered a stretched anterior cruciate ligament injury in the right knee, which needs intense rehabilitation programme for at least four weeks," a hospital statement said.
Mirza became her country's favourite sporting pin-up after she became the first Indian to claim a WTA title and crack the top-50 in the rankings.

Its sad but I had a bad feeling from the start of the year. she had a tough schedule in nov and dec and this increases chances of injury.

well hope she makes her schedule smartly in future..But what a blow esp when she started to find her range.. anyways she might as well have a big rest now..Clay season is anyways non existent for Sania..I read somewhere that this kinda injury can put players out for months..:scared: hope sania will be back on circuit soon(but only when shes completely healed)..

I really hope she can keep her fitness OK during the injury break.

Easy to put on pounds with a knee injury. She looked fitter then ever before in Doha.:hearts:

Hope she recovers soon.:bounce:

Good that she does not have to undego surgery. Hope the `intense' rehab program works, and she gets well soon and back in business.
