Never realised that Maria Sharapova had only ever beat one top 10 player (all be it number 10) before her fairytale slam

No Lindsay?
This also reminds me of Kuznetsova's awful year of 2005 when she got "0" top-10 victory,as a reigning US Open champion.

Dechy best year - 2005, she didn't beat any top10 player...

And Hantuchova last year had 4 top10 victories, more than Schnyder and the same number as Dementieva and Hingis.

No, no. It was a typo. She did beat No.3 Myskina en route to AO SF in 2005.

Mar 16th, 2007, 09:31 PM
so let's talk about the youngsters - they are supposedly the ones we should keep our eyes out for, as they have the biggest chances of making this list in near future:
Jankovic is closest with 9
ivanovic and Chakvetadze follows with 8
safina trails with 7
vaidisova has 5,
krajicek only that one win over dementieva, same for Aga.

suarez has only 8 top10 wins to my suprise. she might still make it, but i doubt it as she has this one last season left and she isn't playing much.

you did however forget Farina Elia, whom i think had 12.

Farina retired therefore she's not on my list.
And Paola has 9 wins, not 8.

As for youngsters, yes JJ is near to make the list. Ivanovic, Chakvetadze, Golovin have 8 wins. Safina and Zvonareva - 7, Vaidisova - 5.
Of other players: Daniilidou - 7, Bovina (sad) - 7, Dulko - 6, Stevenson (lol) - 6, Safarova - 5, Srebotnik - 5.

caught another one - Magui serna still is considered active and has at least 4 top10 wins.
also - petra mandula reached QF at Charleston (d. No.8 Capriati 76(3) 36 75 in 3r for career-best win, though she hasn't played since 2005 i think.

rita grande also beat piece when she was #10. she too hasn't played since 2005.

Yes, i.e. Hingis has only 2 top-10 wins on grass...
Also it's intersting that Venus is the only player who's scored 10+ wins on each surface.

Btw, both lists updated now.

I think you'll find this was in Istanbul last year rather than 2004

Graf was #7 when Schnyder beat her at the USO '98. Would you edit that?

For the purpose of Top-10 wins count I do not consider Steffi Graf a Top-10 player for the whole 1998.
Steffi's ranking throughout 1998 was bizzare due to protected ranking rules. Formally, she was #3 at Hannover and Indian Wells, unranked at Birmingham, #3 at Eastbourne, #75 at Wimbledon, #7 at Stanford, San Diego, and Canadian Open, #38 at New Haven, #7 at US Open, #22 at Leipzig...
