(CNN) -- Reality TV star and former model Anna Nicole Smith was pronounced dead Thursday after being taken to a Florida hospital after being found unconscious in her hotel room, a law enforcement source with knowledge of the case told CNN.
Smith, 39, collapsed at a south Florida hotel and was taken to a local hospital, according to news reports.
TMZ.com had reported that Smith collapsed at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood, Florida, and was rushed to Memorial Regional Hospital in Hollywood just after 2 p.m. ET.
According to reports, Smith was found unresponsive in her hotel room.
Smith was involved in a paternity suit regarding the parentage of her daughter, Danielynn, as well as other disputes, including ones regarding a house she stayed at in the Bahamas around the time she gave birth.
Earlier this week, Smith was included in a class-action lawsuit against a company, TrimSpa, for which she has worked as a spokesperson. TrimSpa makes a product it claims leads to substantial weight loss. The lawsuit alleges the marketing of the product, TrimSpa X32, was false or misleading.
Smith's son, Daniel Wayne Smith, died at age 20 just days after the birth of Smith's daughter. Pathologist Cyril Wecht said a lethal dose of methadone and antidepressants caused cardiac dysrhythmia, leading to his death.

(CBS4) HOLLYWOOD CBS4 News has learned that former Playboy playmate Anna Nicole Smith was taken from the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino Thursday afternoon in an apparent medical emergency, and rushed to Memorial Regional Hospital in Hollywood.

CBS4 sources claim Smith, who gave birth in September and who lost another sun under suspicious circumstances in the Bahamas, was found unconscious in her hotel room at the hotel in Hollywood.

One witness told CBS4 News that paramedics were pumping Smith’s chest as she was taken from the hotel, and a source there said she was breathing.

CBS4's Brian Andrews> Reports that a representative for Smith told him that she was ill yesterday.

However, paramedics were seen administering what appeared to be CPR as Smith was in the ambulance, and later as she arrived at the hospital.

Hollywood police confirmed that they had police units block intersections as the ambulance took Smith to the hospital.

Hollywood Memorial Hospital officials have released little information, but the Hotel has planned a news conference for later Thursday afternoon.

Smith has been involved in a controversy over the parentage of her baby girl born in the Bahamas shortly before the death of her adult son. Two men have claimed to be the father.

HOLLYWOOD, Fla. - Anna Nicole Smith, the former Playboy playmate whose bizarre life careened from marrying an octogenarian billionaire to the untimely death of her son, died Thursday after collapsing at a South Florida hotel, one of her lawyers said.

Smith, 39, collapsed and was unresponsive while staying at the Seminole Hard Rock Cafe Hotel and Casino, said the attorney, Ron Rale. She was rushed to a hospital.

"She checked in Monday at 8 p.m. as a guest. She was due to check out tomorrow," said Danielle Giordaano, a spokeswoman for the hotel.

Smith had been a tabloid staple even before she became Playboy's playmate of the year in 1993. Readers were fascinated by her bombshell good looks, her marriage to an elderly billionaire and subsequent court fight over his estate, her weight fluctuations, and last year, the sudden death of her 20-year-old son, Daniel Smith.

A former topless dancer, she made her name squeezing into Guess jeans. She resembled the late actress Marilyn Monroe, a similarity played up in her Guess magazine ads, billboards and department store displays.

In 1994, she married 89-year-old oil tycoon J. Howard Marshall II, the head of oil-based Koch Industries, which is part of a family fortune worth at least $400 million.

He died in 1995, setting off a feud with her former stepson, E. Pierce Marshall, over whether she had a right to his estate.

A federal court in California awarded Smith $474 million in a complicated legal twist that began after she declared bankruptcy. That was later overturned.

But in May, the U.S. Supreme Court revived her case, ruling that she deserved another day in court in her battle with her former stepson.

The justices said only that federal courts in California could deal with her case despite a Texas state court ruling that Marshall was the sole heir to the estate.

Then, the stepson died June 20 at age 67. But the family said the court fight would continue.

Daniel Smith died Sept. 10 in his mother's hospital room in the Bahamas, just days after she gave birth to a daughter.

An American medical examiner hired by the family, Cyril Wecht, said he had methadone and two antidepressants in his system when he died. Low levels of the three drugs interacted to cause an accidental death, Wecht said.

Meanwhile, the paternity of her now 5-month-old daughter remained a matter of dispute.

She was born Vickie Lynn Hogan on Nov. 28, 1967, in Houston, one of six children of Donald Eugene and Virgie Hart Hogan.

She married Bill Smith in 1985, giving birth to Daniel before divorcing two years later.

I'm sure that ppl her age or younger (maybe soldiers in Iraq) died today who had either made some positive contribution to society, or were more likely to than Anna Nicole. Including ones with young kids.

While (as Griffin once pointed out) celebrities are a "common frame of reference" to discuss, I don't think they deserve extra sympathy as a result of that. (Unless they earned it, as with Princess Diana's work on landmines and HIV B4 she died).

I know...i am not either. I would not wish death on my worst enemy. I also feel like Entertainment Tonight has been parading her around on there show for ratings ever since the death of her son. They were taking advantage of her. They looked like a tabloid magazine sucking the last bits of life out of her for ratings. When i saw her this week on mon, tues and wed she could hardly put thoughts together..let alone commit to a coherent television interview. Then...sitting beside her was her "lawer, lover " Howard Stern. He looked like he had his hand up her ass trying to push words out of her during the interview

This is tragic. I'm so sad  for their whole family and all of their friends. One tragic death after another. I don't think anyone here has a right to judge her for her behavior since her son's death, because we don't know the pain and sorrow she's been going through. They were very close and I'm sure his death was just too much for her to handle without medicating herself. Right or wrong. I'm sure she loved her baby girl and I'm not sure that she intentionally committed suicide. It may have been an accidental overdose. But, regardless my heart goes out to all that loved her and her son.

For Rosie's part, I hope she gets what she deserves for always opening her fat mouth about any and everybody. She is not above criticism, yet she feels the need to criticize whomever is in the news. :(

Hon, she was Playmate of the Year! That's a huge contribution. Think of all the teenaged boys she helped into "manhood" and all the pleasure her shots brought to old guys. And to say she didn't contribute anything positive! :fiery: ;)

I'm sort of surprised because she's not that old, but I can't say I'm upset. She had a lot of money but somehow, her life was still a trainwreck. I don't really feel sorry for rich people who have the money to straighten out their lives, but don't. I'm not saying I feel happy or anything, it's just I don't feel anything either way.

THE VIEW is about opionions. That was her opinion aswell as most other peoples opinion about her at the time . Everyones perception of a persons always seems to change when a person dies. Go back and look at some of the threads and remarks that have been posted about anna over the past few years and you will see what i mean. I am sure Rosie feels bad as we all do that she has died. But, Rosie will not be fired for giving her "View" on the situation. Thats her job...to give her "VIEW" on current events. Babs Walters ASKED her to be on the show for this very reason. She had known Rosie for over 10 years knowing full well what her personality was like. Just out of common courtesy the thing to do would be to appologize to her family on air tomorow. Rosie has one of the biggest hearts in the world. Just look at all she has done for charitable causes. If you don't know what i am talking about then maybe you should look up the facts. Lets not put people ( who have NOTHING to do with this death or case ) down in what in essence is a mourning thread. Its not the proper place for such "criticisms". :wavey:

Emergency responders responded to a cardiac distress call at 1:45pm. They performed CPR at the scene and a breathing tube was inserted in her throat. Anna was immediately transported to Memorial Regional Hospital in Hollywood just after 2:00 this afternoon, she was later pronounced dead shortly after 2:45pm.

TMZ.com is reporting that Anna was found unresponsive in her hotel room. Local streets were closed off to rush Smith to the hospital, three miles from the hotel. Paramedics were seen pumping her chest as she was taken from the hotel.
WTVJ in Miami is reporting Smith was with her companion, Howard K. Stern, and her bodyguard. Hard Rock officials said Smith checked into the hotel on Monday and was scheduled to check out on Friday.
The cause of death will be determined by the Broward County medical examiner.

I wouldn't be surprised if she commited suicide. She lost her son and was taking care of a infant child.

In my opinion she was on psychotic meds. I wouldn't be surprised as well if she drank alcohol with her psychotic meds.???

:wavey:

RIP ANNA I hope you find peace wherever you are now

And, that's my opinion of Rosie. I can't stand her fat big mouth ass. I never said she had anything to do with Anna's death and I never said she would fired over her big mouth. I know that's why that two-faced, backstabbing Barbara Walter's hired that loud mouth bitch. I'm talking about backlash at her personal attacks and negative criticisms toward people who've never said or done anything to personally to her. She's so fucking judgmental I can't stand her and she has no right to be.

I don't care and it doesn't matter what people on this message board have said about anybody. They are not on national TV making judgments and shaping peoples opinions about other people, Rosie is. I know the show is called the View, and she can have a view and she can have an opinion, but that doesn't give her carte blanche to be negative, critical and judgmental, it's not her place. And, her giving to charitable organizations doesn't mean a damn thing. She needs tax write offs like everyone else. So, don't make her out to be the saint that she certainly is not. I don't know that she will apologize and who gives a shit if she does  It's not going to take back what she said. That's the problem, people think they can say whatever they want and then when it backfires on them, they think an apology is the cure all to make everybody feel better. Well, bullshit on that.

If Rosie can critisize whomever she pleases, she certainly is not above it. Everyone else has given their opinions negative and positive of Anna Nicole and Rosie (for what she said). I have every right to do the same. And, this is not a mourning thread. It's a news thread and who are you, the content police?

I wouldn't be shocked if her death was ruled suicide. Losing her son seemed like the last straw for her :sobbing:. I'm truly devastated by this news, although I can't explain why. Lets look @ the reality please. Had she been willing to "settle" for the $89 million the first judge reduced her award from Mr. Marshall's estate to, she probably could have gone away in peace. But she appealed (successfully) to the Supreme Court of the United States (shame on them for taking the case when they turn away the vast majority) for the right to seek the original ($350 million?) award 2B restored. Hell, even if she would have had to "settle" for lets say $50 million so the Marshalls wouldn't appeal, that's not too shabby, especially as she could cash in further with a TV movie, book deal, etc.

OUCH Sally!

What kind of haunts me about this whole thing is that Anna's mother was interviewed on Nancy Grace, and she warned Anna after Daniel's death about Anna's friends and the people around her. Larry King Live replayed that interview.

Like Daniel, she was taking Methadone and anti-depressants. She had been ill with flu-like symptoms over several days. Had just recently (two months ago) recovered from pneumonia and had a recent cesarean section. There could be a number of reasons for her death that do not have an ominous footnote.

We shall wait and see.

However, her daughter has a huge burden to bear, having lost a brother and mother before her first birthday, and a continued custody battle over who is her biological father. And then there is the unresolved issue over millions of dollars that her daughter is likely to inherit, that is, depending upon the validity of Anna Nicole and Howard Stern's questionable marriage in the Bahamas. Sad. Very sad.

Well said.

I won't dispute that Anna was a ditz or fame hungry, but she didn't hurt anyone but herself sadly, living her life. And I never heard her say mean or hurtful things when she was in the public eye. She seemed like a bubbly, friendly yet troubled woman.

I can understand the media wanting to report on the story, but their approach is so tactless. I've avoided everything about it , except written stories. It is indeed exploitive, and totally heartless. People should remember that Anna has a family, who I'm sure are in shock as it is. They don't need to see their loved one dragged through the mud.

Apparently illegal drugs have been found in her hotel room. Not a shocker!

CBS) HOLLYWOOD, Fla. On Friday, we might get some answers about what killed Anna Nicole Smith.

The sudden death if the curvaceous beauty was not only stunning, but it's also the beginning of a battle over her baby and her fortune.

Sources tell CBS 2's Scott Weinberger that investigators found illegal narcotics as well as prescription medications in Anna Nicole's Florida hotel room.

Sources also tell CBS 2 that investigators removed eight bags of evidence from her hotel room.

Her body is now at the Broward Co. Medical Examiner's Office. A toxicology report will determine if the drugs played a role in her death, and an autopsy is scheduled for this morning.

Sources in Florida tell CBS 2's Tamsen Fadal that if Anna Nicole died of natural causes, the autopsy results could be released quickly. However, definitive test results could take weeks.

Well, that would be consistent with her sudden fever, etc.

I think most people wouldn't be shocked if the police found illegal prescription medication where she passed. Everyone knows Anna had a substance abuse problem. It doesn't make her any less of a human being, or souless.

I'm personally more concerned about the child at this point. Anyone heard of where Howard Stern is?

As one who doesn't find it either funny OR as important as the death @ that age of lets say a schoolteacher, let me say that your words about "pressures from society" ring rather hollow. As moon noted earlier ITT, she sought attention.

A lot of very beautiful young women work as secretaries, etc. and worry about their rent and car payments, etc. not how many tens vs. hundreds of millions of dollars they'll get for a brief so-called marriage. (Even most Playboy centerfolds go on to lead normal lives, I suspect).

And once again, let me compare Anna Nicole unfavorably to Princess Diana. Who married a man she wouldn't have if not for the utter BS about British "royalty", but did a lot for humanitarian causes both B4 and after it ended, like landmine clearance and children with AIDS.

wow thats so shocking... like wow
first her son then now her...

people say it's her lawyer/husband who's her daughter's daddy, and supposedly the baby is going to inherit the billions (or is it millions) of dollars from Anna Nicole's old husband.. and so the lawyer/daddy got rid of the son and Anna so his "daughter" will inherit it and so, he will have a piece of it...

Yeah, from poverty and a job at a chicken shack, to Playboy Covergirl, Guess Jeans Model, Reality TV Star, to such odd events the past six months.

Ever since her win at the Supreme Court, her life just seemed to tumble out of control.

Sorry a little girl lost her mother.

Sorry she died.

But, what is with the ridiculous coverage of this story?

She is getting coverage a head of state or sports superstar or
politician or great artist would get in passing.

It's pretty sick coverage. The hanger ons, the losers in her circle
of friends, and so called friends, the lecherous people who are
getting interviewed. I can't get away from it. It's on regular news,
regular radio, it's surpassing wars and famine and floods and
riots.

Doesn't say much for American media or American 'infotainment/newsatainment' coverage.

It's a freak show.
That's what we're being fed on the news.

Right up Katie Couric's aisle.

Anna Nicole had some psycholigical problems imho. I think even though she just gave birth to a baby girl that she felt a sad deep loss from her son.

I don't think Howard Stern killed her. She's to high profile. I think he cared for her and wanted to protect her. He was a narcisstic as Anna was. A svengali type. I just think she couldn't cope with her son's death and all the lawsuits and problems in her life. She wanted to die imho.

Tragic but common in society. I hope her daughter is able to live a normal and healthy life.

This whole thing is just so, so sad. The person who will suffer the most from all this is little Dannielynn. Fortunately for her, she's not able to see all the exploitative news coverage of her mom's passing. But unfortunately for this child, she's lost her older brother and now her mom before her first birthday, and she will probably spend years in legal limbo before all this is settled.

Did Anna Nicole even have a will? Somehow I doubt it, given she wasn't even forty.

HOLLYWOOD, Fla. - Zsa Zsa Gabor's husband, Prince Frederick von Anhalt, says he may be the father of Anna Nicole Smith's baby.

Meanwhile, a judge on Friday refused to order an emergency DNA test on the body of Anna Nicole Smith as part of a paternity suit involving her infant daughter, but he ordered that the body be preserved until a hearing in 10 days, attorneys said.

A medical examiner began an autopsy Friday on Anna Nicole Smith, whose mother blamed drugs for the former Playboy playmate's sudden death that ended an extraordinary tabloid life at just 39.

"I think she had too many drugs, just like Danny (Smith's late son)," her mother, Vergie Arthur, told ABC's "Good Morning America" on Friday. "I tried to warn her about drugs and the people that she hung around with. She didn't listen."

"She was too drugged up," Arthur said. "By the last interview I saw of her, she was so wasted."

Smith's attorney, Ron Rale, said the one-time reality TV star had been ill for several days with a fever and was still depressed over the death five months ago of her 20-year-old son from what a private medical examiner determined was a combination of methadone and two antidepressants.

On Thursday, authorities say, a private nurse found Smith unconscious in her room at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino and called 911. A bodyguard performed CPR, Seminole Police Chief Charlie Tiger said, but Smith was declared dead at a hospital.

Late Thursday, sheriff's deputies carried out at least eight brown paper bags sealed with red evidence tape from Smith's hotel room.

Several detectives are reviewing the hotel surveillance tapes to see if they might provide a clue to what happened, Deputy Police Chief Michael Browne said Friday. He said they had interviewed everyone connected to the death and no one was under suspicion.

"Nothing about this death seems suspicious. We're not treating it that way," Browne said. "We're being very thorough. We're going to look at everything."

Edwina Johnson, chief investigator for the Broward County Medical Examiner's Office, said an autopsy was under way Friday morning to try to determine the cause of death.

If Smith died of natural causes, the findings will likely be announced quickly, but definitive results could take weeks, said Dr. Joshua Perper, who was performing the autopsy.

"I am not a prophet, and I cannot tell you before the autopsy what I am going to find," he said.

Smith's son's death in the Bahamas on Sept. 10 came just a few days after she gave birth to a daughter, Dannielynn, whose custody remains in dispute.

The birth certificate lists Dannielynn's father as attorney Howard K. Stern, Smith's most recent companion, who Rale said was with Smith at the hotel and was too choked up to talk when he called Rale with the news. Smith's ex-boyfriend Larry Birkhead is waging a legal challenge, saying he is the father.

At a hearing Friday in Los Angeles, a judge declined Birkhead's attorney's request to order an immediate DNA sample be taken from Smith's body. The judge ordered the body be retained, though, until a hearing on Feb. 20, attorney Debra Opri said.

Opri said the DNA is needed to connect Smith with Dannielynn "so that no one can switch the babies."

She also asked the judge to take jurisdiction over the child until her paternity is established. "Nothing was granted. Nothing was denied," she said.

Rale, Smith's attorney, said it was "despicable that we would have an emergency notice and appear right now."

The baby was being cared for in the Bahamas by the mother of Shane Gibson, the Bahamian immigration minister who is a close friend of Smith's, People magazine reported on its Web site, citing unidentified sources.

A visibly shaken Gibson declined comment as he was leaving his office Thursday night, and he has not responded to several message left by The Associated Press seeking comment.

Through the '90s and into the 21st century, Smith was famous for being famous, a pop-culture punchline because of her up-and-down weight, her Marilyn Monroe looks, her exaggerated curves, her little-girl voice, her ditzy-blonde persona and her over-the-top revealing outfits.

Recently, she lost a reported 69 pounds and became a spokeswoman for TrimSpa, a weight-loss supplement. In recent TV appearances, her speech was often slurred and she seemed out of it. Some critics said she seemed drugged-out.

"Undoubtedly it will be found at the end of the day that drugs featured in her death as they did in the death of poor Daniel," said Michael Scott, a former attorney for Smith in the Bahamas.

Rale said he had talked to her on Tuesday or Wednesday, and she had flu symptoms and a fever and was still grieving over her son. He dismissed claims her death was related to drugs as "a bunch of nonsense."

"Poor Anna Nicole," he said. "She's been the underdog. She's been besieged ... and she's been trying her best and nobody should have to endure what she's endured."

The Texas-born Smith was a topless dancer at a strip club before she made the cover of Playboy magazine in 1992. She became Playboy's playmate of the year in 1993. She was also signed to a contract with Guess jeans, appearing in TV commercials, billboards and magazine ads.

In 1994, she married 89-year-old oil tycoon J. Howard Marshall II, owner of Great Northern Oil Co. After his death the following year, she engaged in a protracted legal fight with her former stepson, E. Pierce Marshall, over whether she had a right to the estate.

A federal court in California awarded Smith $474 million. That was later overturned. But in May, the U.S. Supreme Court revived her case, ruling that she deserved another day in court.

The stepson died June 20 at age 67, but the family said the court fight would continue.

Smith starred in her own reality TV series, "The Anna Nicole Show," in 2002-04. She also appeared in movies, performing a bit part in "The Hudsucker *****" in 1994.

Smith was born Vickie Lynn Hogan on Nov. 28, 1967, in Houston, one of six children. Her parents split up when she was a toddler, and she was raised by her mother, a deputy sheriff.

She dropped out after 11th grade after she was expelled for fighting, and worked as a waitress and then a cook at Jim's Krispy Fried Chicken restaurant in Mexia, Texas.

She married 16-year-old fry cook Bill Smith in 1985, giving birth to Daniel before divorcing two years later.

I met Anna Nicole a long time ago and her statuesque beauty was obvious and it's what made her a star. It's a shame Anna Nicole could not emotionally deal with fame and fortune. :( But it's a bigger shame and heartbreaking tragedy that Anna Nicole's sudden passing leaves her 5 month old daughter Dannielynn motherless only about 5 months after her 20 year old son Daniel died. I hope Dannielynn is raised by people that love her and not because of what she could be worth.

No, you're not wrong on the last sentence. (Only to presume that "the white folk" universally mourned Ford more than Mrs. King). She did get a (Georgia) state funeral, and Anna Nicole won't. But CNN didn't devote all 2 afternoon hours of its daily hard news program (The Situation Room) to Mrs. King's death, as it did to this bimbo's.

I didn't dislike Anna Nicole nearly as much B4 as I do reading the slew of infantile posts ITT, acting like she was somebody "important". @ least I just got to listen to the declaration speech of Barack Obama, which may actually mean something to the country and the world, whether one supports him or not.

I have no grief fo her because I have no idea what she is famous for. I know she acted but is it for her playboy shoots that she was famous for or for her marriage to the old Texan guy? Or a combnation of all of this. i never saw any of her movies so I can't comment on her acting. But I have to confess i am findng it entertaining to see 3 men claim to be the father of the baby. this oly happens if the woman was super rich. Was that the case with her and oif so then why was she still trying to claim the old guy's inheritance or did she get the money?

Anna's Death Fridge -- Methadone and Slim-Fast

TMZ has obtained a photo of the inside of Anna Nicole Smith's refrigerator taken after she died, and the contents are shocking on several levels. TMZ has 100% verified the authenticity of this photo.

The refrigerator, which was inside Anna Nicole's bedroom in the Bahamas, contained methadone (5 mg per 5 ml). The small refrigerator contained cans of Slim-Fast-- ironic, since Smith was TRIMSPA's spokesperson. Several bottles of TRIMSPA sat right next to the fridge.

The fridge also contained Miracle 2000 (marketed as a nutritional supplement for "today's active lifestyle"), French's Worcestershire Sauce, yogurt and spray butter. It also appears there are vials of injectable medicines.

The methadone is compelling, as Smith's son Daniel died from a combination of drugs that included methadone. Law enforcement sources in the Bahamas tell TMZ that at least one witness has come forward and said Howard K. Stern supplied Daniel with methadone just before he died, and flushed the remaining stash down the toilet. That witness is expected to testify next month at the coroner's inquest into Daniel's death.

Now Stern is placed in the same home with another stash of methadone -- the home he shared with Smith.

TMZ has confirmed that law enforcement in the Bahamas is aware of the contents of the refrigerator.

Smith's Remains Finally Embalmed

Former Playboy Playmate Anna Nicole Smith's body was finally embalmed on Saturday, more than a week after her death. The 39-year-old was embalmed at the Broward County Medical Examiner's office by two morticians from Aycock Funeral Home in Jupiter, Florida. The process was delayed another day after Judge Larry Seidlin ordered on Friday that mortuary workers sign a confidentiality agreement to protect Smith's dignity in death. The process finally began on Saturday at 9:15am local time and took two hours and 45 minutes. Chief Medical Examiner Dr. Joshua Perper and his chief investigator, Edwina Johnson, were present during the procedure. Perper tells the New York Daily News, "Two embalmers did the work. The body was put in a black plastic bag and sealed with evidence tape. It's in a refrigerator under lock and key." The pathologist said there were "some minor deterioration changes" but insisted they won't affect her viewing appearance. Perper added, "She was a beautiful person. She's going to look like she looked in life." Smith's companion Howard K. Stern, is set to testify in a Fort Lauderdale courtroom on Tuesday about her wishes to be buried in the Bahamas alongside her late son, Daniel. Meanwhile, Smith's estranged mother, Virgie Arthur, is also fighting for her remains and wants her daughter to be buried in her native Texas
