Lisa Nowak, 43, was arrested Monday, Feb. 5, 2007, for attempting to kidnap a woman she believed was romantically involved with another astronaut she was in love with, police said. By MIKE SCHNEIDER, Associated Press Writer

ORLANDO, Fla. - An astronaut drove 900 miles and donned a disguise to confront a woman she believed was her rival for the affections of a space shuttle pilot, police said. She was arrested Monday and charged with attempted kidnapping and other counts.

US Navy Capt. Lisa Nowak, 43, who flew last July on a shuttle mission to the international space station, was also charged with attempted vehicle burglary with battery, destruction of evidence and battery. She was denied bail.
Police said Nowak drove from her home in Houston to the Orlando International Airport to confront Colleen Shipman.

Nowak believed Shipman was romantically involved with Navy Cmdr. William Oefelein, a pilot during space shuttle Discovery's trip to the space station last December, police said.

Nowak told police that her relationship with Oefelein was "more than a working relationship but less than a romantic relationship," according to an arrest affidavit. Police officers recovered a love letter to Oefelein in her car.

NASA spokesman James Hartsfield in Houston said that, as of Monday, Nowak's status with the astronaut corps remained unchanged.

"What will happen beyond that, I will not speculate," he said.
Hartsfield said he couldn't recall the last time an astronaut was arrested and said there were no rules against fraternizing among astronauts.

When she found out that Shipman was flying to Orlando from Houston, Nowak decided to confront her, according to the arrest affidavit. Nowak raced from Houston to Orlando wearing diapers so she wouldn't have to stop to urinate, authorities said.

Astronauts wear diapers during launch and re-entry.

Dressed in a wig and a trench coat, Nowak boarded an airport bus that Shipman took to her car in an airport parking lot. Shipman told police she noticed someone following her, hurried inside the car and locked the doors, according to the arrest affidavit.

Nowak rapped on the window, tried to open the car door and asked for a ride. Shipman refused but rolled down the car window a few inches when Nowak started crying. Nowak then sprayed a chemical into Shipman's car, the affidavit said.

Shipman drove to the parking lot booth, and the police were called.

During a check of the parking lot, an officer followed Nowak and watched her throw away a bag containing the wig and BB gun. They also found a steel mallet, a 4-inch folding knife, rubber tubing, $600 and garbage bags inside a bag Nowak was carrying when she was arrested, authorities said.

Inside Nowak's vehicle, which was parked at a nearby motel, authorities uncovered a pepper spray package, an unused BB-gun cartridge, latex gloves and e-mails between Shipman and Oefelein. They also found a letter "that indicated how much Mrs. Nowak loved Mr. Oefelein," an opened package for a buck knife, Shipman's home address and hand written directions to the address, the arrest affidavit said.

Police said Nowak told them that she only wanted to scare Shipman into talking to her about her relationship with Oefelein and didn't want to harm her physically.

"If you were just going to talk to someone, I don't know that you would need a wig, a trench coat, an air cartridge BB gun and pepper spray," said Sgt.

Barbara Jones, a spokeswoman for the Orlando Police Department. "It's just really a very sad case. ... Now she ends up finding herself on the other side of the law with some very serious charges."

If convicted of attempted kidnapping, Nowak could face a maximum of life in prison.

It was not immediately known whether Nowak had an attorney.
Oefelein and Shipman did not immediately return phone messages Monday night.
According to NASA's official biography, Nowak is married with three children. During her 13-day mission in July she operated the robotic arm during three spacewalks.

Oefelein is unmarried. He piloted the space shuttle Discovery in December. He has two children, according to a NASA biography.
Nowak and Oefelein were both first-time fliers during their shuttle missions last year. They trained together but never flew together.

===============

bold is mine.

One thing for sure is that Shipman (the lady being targeted) is so damn lucky that this all happened in the airport parking lot with plenty of people around, and not at her home. :scared: :speakles:

A few more details:

Police found receipts indicating Nowak paid only in cash during her trip from Houston, including for her hotel stay.

According to the affidavit, police were called at 3:50 a.m. by Shipman, who told them she had been followed from the airport to a satellite parking lot by a dark-haired woman in glasses, wearing a trench coat with a hood pulled over her head.

Shipman told police she could hear the woman's footsteps running after her, so she jumped into her car and locked the doors quickly.

I saw this on the news last night, and just thought, no way...what
an idiot, what a crazy thing to do, what a life to throw away.

I can see the movie plans in the works already.

Jennifer Anniston, Jennifer Garner, and who, Ben Affleck, George
Clooney, Jake Gyllenhall, etc. It's a done deal.

All that schooling, training (on our dime) ,and prestige, and she
tossed it all away....over a guy?

What does this guy have that made a NASA scientist and
astronaut go this nuts? It sadly also looks like she liked him a lot,
but that nothing may have actually ever happened between them.

Visions of Glenn Close come to mind, perhaps, w/o the physical
relationship ever having transpired.

Yikes.

I'm glad she didn't hurt the woman, that would have been even worse.

The cops looked puzzled themselves at what happened.

Diapers? Yuck. That's one determined woman.

She'll say she was on drugs or having a bad reaction to a prescription,
in severe depression, etc.

If she's stopping at a hotel and to get gas, why the diapers?

You know what, though, the guy is totally hot and worthy of being stalked.

I think they did it one too many times in space and she must have hit her head on the ceiling of the shuttle or something. I've heard of "road head" but never "orbit head."

Also, trying to kidnap someone at an airport is pretty stupid, there is security and cameras all over the place. I mean, if they don't catch you in the act, they will have the photo of you leaving, etc. For a space engineer, I expected her to be a little more clever, like follow the other bimbo and snatch her at a gas station or in her driveway.

I'm not sure if having garbage bags, a hammer, some gloves, and a bb gun in your car can get you convicted of kidnapping but she defintely assaulted the broad with the pepper spray. I don't think she'll do hard time. She's not all there from the sound of it

Or spread it around NASA that the other lady had herpes or something, I guess it's one big orgy over there at the coast, and having had to spend months on end over in that rat-hole town, drinking and screwing are about the only things to do.

As I've said though, that guy is hot, and I can see some brainy chick whose never had it so good could flip out if he was going to dump her. The guy's married, too, and not to the woman assaulted at the airport. :o

Yes, I can put myself in both women's places.

The victim was quick-thinking and reacted just perfectly.

She knew she was being followed when she was on the bus - requires being alert to all that is going on around you.

She RAN in the parking lot when she suspected the attacker was after her, and got into her car quickly and locked the doors.

She wouldn't help the attacker when she was acting like she just needed some help - sometimes that is hard to do, to say no.

She only opened her window a little bit. Very smart.

Picture of Nowak, Oefelin, Shipman

http://i.a.cnn.net/cnn/2007/US/02/06/astronaut.arrested/newt1.1737.astronauts.jpg
Nowak is the female astronaut, Oefelein is the male astronaut, Shipman is the other woman.

Fresh details:

Nowak and Oefelein did not fly on the same space shuttle mission, but they trained together for 11 days in 2002 at a Canadian army cold-weather survival camp.

Oefelein is unmarried, but does have two children.

She drove 12 hours straight the 950 miles from Houston to Orlando. In Orlando she checked into a motel where she paid cash and registered under an assumed name.

Two other astronauts, one her supervisor and pilot of their joint July mission to the space station, attended her hearing today. They are perplexed, and concerned for her heath and well-being. They will take her back to Houston.

If convicted of the new charges, attempted first-degree murder, she faces 30 years to life in prison.

Shipman is an Air Force Captian, who worked at Patrick Air Force Base near the Kennedy Space Center.

Nowak graduated from the US Naval Academy with a master's degree in aeronautical engineering. She has logged more than 1,500 flight hours in 30 different aircraft.

Oefelein, 41, piloted Discovery on a 13-day International Space Station assembly flight in December. From window perches inside the shuttle and the station, he orchestrated four spacewalks during one of the most complex outpost construction missions to date. Nicknamed "Billy O," Oefelein, a U.S. Navy commander, came to NASA in 1998.

Nowak has been married for 19 years, but recently separated from her husband in the past few weeks. Her husband is also a NASA employee.

Nowak has a teenage son and twin 5-year old girls.

Nowak made both of her court appearances shackled and wearing a dark-colored jumpsuit. In the afternoon session, for the attempted murder charge, she kept her eyes straight ahead

Nowak has now been released on $25,000 bond. As a condition of her release, Nowak was ordered to wear a global positioning satellite device, known as a GPS.

Shipman is aware that Nowak has been stalking her for the past two months.

Michael Coates, director of NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston, issued a statement saying Nowak "is officially on 30-day leave and has been removed from flight status and all mission-related activities." "We are deeply saddened by this tragic event. The charges against Lisa Nowak are serious ones that must be decided by the judicial system," the statement

List of items she had with her:

new steel mallet
large garbage bags
new 4-inch knife with folding blade (buck knife; package also found)
3 to 4 feet of rubber tubing
a disguise which included a black wig, tan trench coat, and glasses
carbon dioxide powered cartridge BB gun (pistol)
unused BB gun cartridge
pepper spray (which she used on the victim)
pepper spray package
6 latex gloves
diapers Nowak said she wore to reduce stops along the way
emails between Oelefein and Shipman (the other woman)
a letter that indicated how much she (the astronaut)loved Oelefein
Shipman's home address and handwritten directions to Shipman's home
$600
Black bag containing man of these items, and a handwrtitten list of these items

It's a big story because we think of the NASA astronauts as the
best and brightest, it's such a difficult program to get into and
be part of. Here is this seemingly brilliant woman with a family,
who has been at the top of the scientific world, and she does this
thing that is right out of a movie or tv show.

But, I have to agree w/her lawyer on one thing he said...the police
in Orlando are spining a lot of story out of the circumstances of the
case. No one was hurt, she has no history of such incidents in her past,
and the cops are talking a lot to the press w/little reason. Now, we've
got Fox and CNN and MSNBC and the world news on the
'Lust in Space' saga.

Fact is we don't know that much, and no one was harmed, and if she
was a real risk to society, she would not have been allowed to go home
w/the monitor on bail.

They trained together but never flew together.

bold is mine.

One thing for sure is that Shipman (the lady being targeted) is so damn lucky that this all happened in the airport parking lot with plenty of people around, and not at her home. :scared: :speakles:

Ole Sally believes in charity. Shelly can be the nut job astronaut and Margot Kidder can be the victim. Now wouldn't that be a riot? Who's the biggest loon?

That's a real toss up. Margot, when off of mediation, lives in woodpiles in strangers' backyards without her dental plate and thinks the CIA is after her. The latest from one of the rags on Shelly Long is that she's at some nuthouse where she's claiming that she's going to build a chapel on the grounds for everyone to go to. :tape:

If she's stopping at a hotel and to get gas, why the diapers?

You know what, though, the guy is totally hot and worthy of being stalked.

If you are going to throw you career away, at least the man better be good looking and/or have a big penis, which from what I've seen, has has neither looks or a huge saussage.

Vic Tayback is in a special category, all on his own! Can you imagine like a 3-way with Vic and Barney Frank? At least the dream is still alive with the latter.

I disagree. Obviously the fact that she is an astronaut multiplies media interest, but this was nevertheless a serious and bizarre incident. By evidence, she had planned this for at least 2 weeks prior, and her claim that she merely wanted to talk with Ms Shipman seems kinda unlikely given elaborate amount of dangerous objects and planning involved. I mean, normal, non-violent people don't carry mallets, knifes, pepper sprays and BB guns when they're going just to discuss with someone. She's going to need OJ-level lawyering to get away with merely a battery.

 Your not a loser... I love watching the shuttle launch stuff. My dad used to take us in his pontoon boat as close to the launch pad as possible. The Coast Guard will let you know when you get too close (only happened once) The night launches are the best!

I've seen a couple of launches in person. I'll be watching the next launch too... It's on my birthday. Damn the fact that I'll have to be there at 6am and it's a 2 hour drive! But it's Atlantis and Atlantis is my favorite shuttle. Yes... I have a favorite. :o

Police affidavit: http://www.orlandosentinel.com/media/acrobat/2007-02/27756582.pdf

She was carrying her newly-bought steel mallet with her when she approached Shipman. It seems that she bought most of the items just for the trip. Tough times ahead for her lawyers.

Y'know, for most people during 1500km-trip there would come period of thinking and reflection: "Dang! Now what am I doing? Is this really a good idea?"

Shipman's restraint order application:

Note she refers Nowak as an "Acquaintance of boyfriend".

Isn't it odd that NASA sent a NASA spokesperson to fly her home,
accompany her, and pay for all her expenses for that trip. Why?
I guess to make sure she doesn't go on ET or TMZ or something
and blab away. We're paying for her to be quiet right now.

If a man had done what she had done, he would be in jail.
Astronaut or not.
She may be nutty, but, she went there to cause harm.
She should have been in jail for days.
The bail should have been higher.

In the meantime, the poor woman who was stalked cannot get a
restraining order against the crazed astronaut, and the guy has
to take a leave of absence to help her out.

She didn't exactly put the cause of women's rights forward with
her actions.

The story of the NASA Astro-NUT!!! :D Quite the story, indeed!

It's tragic, of course. But funny as hell. Because as some people have said, nothing happened in the end. She only gave the other woman a bit of a scare, so I suppose she won't be getting prison time, will she? She wouldn't in Spain, I don't think. All that orbiting around the Earth obviously impaired her mind, she needs mental help more than anything.

It's hard balancing being a working woman with children.... with being CRAZY! ;) (they made quite a bit of fun of this bit of news on WNBC, did anyone see it?)
