Well played by Martina. Serve wasn't really an issue today. Just that one game in the first set where she was broken. Was very consistent all throughout, something Ana was not tonight. I feel that if you hang with Ana during her "on" moments and find a way to topple her through that, the inconsistent side of her will eventually show up. Anyway, it was a good tournament overall for Ana either way. Good job. :)

So far she's defended or improved at every event from last year. That bodes well, and if she can carry her form through the RG-Wim break, she's got a very good chance to end the year in the top 4. Henin, Clijsters and Mauresmo are all wildcards up there, Serena and Kuznetsova the only ones I can picture moving up there.

How cool would the YEC look with Martina and Serena both in it? Flashback to the 90's, much?

What in the heck happened after 4-all in the first set. Granted Martina never waivered and her groundstrokes were very penatrative, I can't believe all the balls Ana smacked into the net.

Considering Ana has been in big occasions before since she did beat Martina in a Tier 1 final, I'm still shaking my head after that match tonight.

hingis leapfrogs petrova and moves up to #6 in the world (with quite a lead over #7) and honestly the top 5 is not too far away at all. she's likely to gain even more points at dubai, indian wells, and miami.

maybe now people will stop saying she was playing better at this time last year? probably not

ivanovic really needs to learn how to construct points properly. at the moment she justs want to hit every shot for a winner, but that is just implausible.

When martina beats these power hitters not much is said about her ability to hang with them, just a lot about how poorly her opponent plays. But when she loses, it is said she just cannot play with the big girls. Well let me tell you what, Martina sure has beaten a lot of big hitters since her comeback, impressively & convincingly too!!

she played well until 3-3. But anyway she had a great week. Losing to Hingis is nothing bad. Its good for her confidence that she could make a TIER I finals without her coach...serving better, returning better. She just has to keep this up, and she is a positive girl and i believe this is just the beggining of the good results this year. She needs to sort her game a bit. Work even harder to win points under pressure. Hingis is crafty player...and thus Ana needs to add just little bit of variety...she did come to the net...but she must improve that part of her game. But as for Maria...both girls are pretty big...and they will always have troubles on net...Ana a little bit more cause she's a bit slower. But congrats to Hingis too bad they dont give diamond raquets for those achievments. Ana- stay focused and results will come. Top 10 is closer now :)

Great win Martina.

But Ivanovic, inconsistent once again. Same problem at AO. Plays an extremely good match but follows up with a shithouse match. She's shown that she can play with the top, but like many others, that inconsistency is gonna stop her.

Hingis races to record fifth Tokyo title

By Alastair Himmer

TOKYO (Reuters) - Former world number one Martina Hingis thrashed Serbia's Ana Ivanovic 6-4 6-2 to win a record fifth Pan Pacific Open title on Sunday.

The Swiss second seed completely outclassed Ivanovic, wrapping up a one-sided final in 71 minutes to capture her third singles title since returning full-time to the WTA Tour in 2006.

"Winning (tournaments) is twice as sweet this time around definitely," Hingis told reporters. "It used to be so normal for me in 1997 and 1998.

"I never thought I'd have the chance to win tournaments again. This time it feels like I really deserve it. I'm more proud this time round." :worship:

It was also a 43rd career singles title for Hingis, who previously won in Tokyo in 1997, 1999, 2000 and 2002 and was a losing finalist on three other occasions.

Hingis won five grand slam singles titles between 1997 and 1999 before quitting the game at the end of 2002 due to nagging foot and ankle trouble.

CLEVER ANGLES

Ivanovic had beaten Hingis in Montreal last year in their only other meeting, but the fifth seed had no answer to Hingis's unerring precision and clever use of angles.

Hingis, who reached the quarter-finals of last month's Australian Open, is set to remain at number six when the new world rankings are released on Monday.

"Hopefully I can be more successful this year," said the 26-year-old, who raised a few eyebrows when she suggested she would use her trophy as a sushi dish at her home. .. :haha:

"This year I want to prove myself even more. I have to keep improving if I'm going to survive in the game today."

Hingis earned $182,000 for her victory. She is currently fourth in the WTA's all-time list of women's prize money winners with just under $20 million.

Ivanovic, who reached the final after world number one Maria Sharapova retired in their semi-final with a hamstring injury, is projected to rise to 14th in the new rankings.

"It didn't feel good really," shrugged the 19-year-old from Belgrade. "But it was great to be in a final against Martina. She just played an unbelievable match."

but martina always has to keep working in her serve

I feel that if you hang with Ana during her "on" moments and find a way to topple her through that, the inconsistent side of her will eventually show up.

Don't know if that is a pattern for all of Ivanovic's matches, but for this one it certainly was.

Hingis was hanging to the match by the fingernails on those first 6-7 games of the first set. She was chasing Ivanovic's rockets like a windscreen wiper and watching her second serve getting blasted away, and I thought that Ivanovic had it in the bag. She was dictating all the rallies, hitting the bejesus out of the ball, and handling the low bounce much better than one would expect - which again shows that her touch and resourcefulness on the defense are underrated and underused. Ivanovic prevailed in quite a few more artistic exchanges with Hingis, and even her usually crap BH was doing damage (her BH can be quite powerful and only hits short when put under pressure). Hingis was playing a bit tentatively, presumably waiting for Ivanovic to bury herself in errors, and it didn't seem to be working - but then it did. All of a sudden and for no apparent reason Ivanovic giftwrapped Hingis the decisive break, and the first set was lost. The PPO carpet gave some more bite to Hingis' first serve, and that helped her in keeping herself on the set long enough for Ivanovic's level to drop and thus give Hingis the opportunity she needed.

Hingis, like JH no longer H, has the ability to change her game plan completely during the match. Just waiting for Ivanovic's error isn't working - then time to play a bit more aggressively to try to draw the errors out of her. So she began stepping in and taking over the points whenever possible (at the beginning, not very often), using her BH for added power and depth, taking the ball early and hitting straight back at Ivanovic's feet to take away time from her.

The re-live on ES1 then switched to 4-1 second set IIRC. Now I know that Hingis was up 4-0, and judging from what I've read here, Ivanovic was netting one ball after another (the low bounce is murder for such a big girl).

The little that ES1 showed of the second set featured Ivanovic doing her best Kuznetsova impression, going for big winners when out of position and missing by kms, and also letting Hingis boss her around.

Credit to Hingis for:

- her patience in waiting for the storm to abate when she seemed on the verge of getting blown clean off the court
- reading Ivanovic's serve accurately and getting so many of those rockets back into play
- the amazing touch she displayed on all those huge shots she returned with reflex half-volleys

There - I've just typed in praise for Hingis. Now please excuse me while I go get a hammer to smash up my keyboard.

But to do it on a regular basis hasn't been easy for her and she will be the first one to tell you so.

Ivanovic and Dementieva, albiet great players, have a lot of weeknesses that Martina is able to expose and that was totally evident this tournament.

I'm delighted for her. She played really well this tournament, and fully deserved it. It's nice to see her climbing the rankings again, and no doubt she'll be back in the top 5 soon. If only she could play like this at the slams, then she'd give herself a great chance for a title. :)
