View Full Version : Serena's most Dominating match?

Well AO 07 may have been her most domineering final but her most dominating match was at Wimbledon 02. It was the semifinal against Mauresmo. Serena peaked in that match and has not regained that level. She may never reach that peak again. She was simply awesome.

As a Hingis fan the USO 2001 semis was pretty scary. A part of me was actually hoping for a Sisters final, but, still, Martina (and Lindsay by Venus) was thoroughly dismissed by Rena that day

'03 Open De Gaz Vs Mauresmo: Beautiful finess and movement from Serena. Her serve was Sampras like.

Well Serena has steamrolled on Carpriati (wimbledon 6-1/6-1) Dementieva (Nasdaq 6-1/6-1) so those were some other good ones too

Serena has had lots of dominating matches. And the possiblity that she will reach her 02 peak is still there. She said the best is yet to come. So we will see. If she continues this road then we will see Serena dominate more matches against TOP players.!

Urm its certainly one of the most dominating I have seen. The weird thing with Serena is she can win 5-7 7-5 7-5 and look completly dominant, and win 6-0 6-0 and appear sloppy.

I think her run in RG 2003 had some pretty dominant matches including Mauresmo and Schett (altohigh Babsi could have won the first three games, so maybe dominant in only the scoreline sense). I also think the Wimbleodn FInal of 2002 she appeared pretty dominant, and is probably the one time she has been able to play her best tennis against her sister.

That is the one that I always remember.
Because not only was this highly anticipated, but there was some(irrational)
consensus in the French press and other publications that this was finally Mauresmo's year to win her home country slam.

Against Daja Bedanova at US Open '02. Bedanova didn't play a bad match at all and still got whooped 6-1 6-1. It was scary.
I know Serena had those kind of scorelines against much more famous players but this was IMO something special.

vs. Raymond Wimbledon 2000 QF :tape: Mis-match

vs. Hingis USO SF - That performance seemingly came from nowhere. Her

vs. Sharapova Aussie 2007 - Unexpected beatdown. Serena prevented Masha from asserting herself from the get-go. I have to rate this number one. :hearts:

Serena played Amy Frazier in Montreal back in 2000 and killed her 6-0 6-1. I remember Serena saying after the match, "I'm probably never going to say this again, so write it down. I'm satisfied with how I played." Amy was smiling and laughing towards the end because she knew how ridiculously well Serena was playing. She said after the match that "unless I hit a perfect shot right on the baseline, she hit a winner off it."

It's interesting that Serena Williams rarely delivers a double bagel, considering she is the most ruthless woman tennis player out there (this is a compliment folks).

It will be interesting to see her face Mauresmo and Henin this year. These two (and Sharapova- who already faced her) match ups could tell us the real state of the women's game today.

but I tend to believe that Serena Williams's will has more to do than the competition right now when she won a couple days ago.

getting back to the topic...Serena was on her way to delivering the Hingis's worst defeat back in 2000 Montreal F. The first 7 games of that match was a sight to see, and Hingis wasn't playing badly at all.

I had forgotten about some of the beatdowns that Serena has handed out over the years, especially to the top players. I love Amelie and I felt so bad for her each time Serena played her so ruthlessly. French Open 03 and Wimbledon 02 were :o

What was that US Open where she demolished Hingis with almost 100% first serves in the first set?

I think this AO '07 seems so devastating because it came out of nowhere. We saw flashes of brilliance throughout the tournament but never thought that she would dominate so comprehensively. She came out like a Titan, even thought she is not at her physical peak. We were all taken by surprise at the ferocity that Serena took the title last Sunday.

I am not sure what year it was, but there was one occasion against Hingis
at the US Open where this happens.
I remember this, because John McEnroe was not king to Hingis.
He implied during in his commentary that Hingis had to travel to Dubai
( read a faraway place where there are no WS, to win a title).

Serena’s servces were perfect that day. Throughout the match, Hingis had trouble guessing where the Great One was going to serve.
And the rare coccasion she guessed right, it was service winner.

On top of that, Serena ate up all her serves, treating every single one of them like a second serve. I am not sure after that rumors start circulating about Hingis possible retirement

Anyway as far as top players are concerned, for me it's a toss up between the '03 RG quarter against Mauresmo, the '03 Wimbly semi against Justine (although the scoreline doesn't do the beat down justice) and '07 AO final against Maria.

Beatdowns against non-top players in early rounds are just too numerous to remember for me.

Much of this, I think, illustrates what I've always believed.

When Serena is at her best and in all likely-hood(sp) going to win, she seems to dominate from end to end- runs in front damn near the whole time.

This "playing herself into form" during a tournament, as we so often hear and see, is not typical Serena. It's more akin to Vee. Serena- at her best- dominates from end to end more often than not, imho.

Yeah, but she hasn't been in form. What she did at AO this year was amazing. She totally played herself into form at this tourney and it all came together in the final. I believe she did catch Maria off guard, because Maria has never played her in this form. It's always been something wrong where she's struggling. I still believe that even if Maria had been serving better at the AO, Serena would have still outplayed her and not let her into the match. It was all about Serena and her serves, returns and blistering groundstrokes.

I love that Vee and Rena are playing with these racquets. :bounce: I'm sooooooooooo excited about this season.

Poor Yvette Basting. Wasn't that match like 36 minutes? :tape: Never heard from the girl again....

It was quick.... As Andy said after Serena rocked Jennifer 6-1, 6-1, I came out of the locker room and the match was over....

In my opinion, her 2003 Roland Garros QF was her most dominating match. It was just:eek: .

My personal favorite Serena match was the 2003 Roland Garros quarter final. Serena CRUSHED Mauresmo 61 62

She NEVER let Momo into the match. She had the look that she wanted to KILL Mauresmo.

..and she had that look this year in the Aus Open Final too, and won by the same scoreline:bounce:

Even Serena's mom said that the final at this year's AO was reminicent of that match at RG 03 vs Mauresmo.

But for fierce, scary determination, I think it would be hard to beat her match with JJ at this year's AO. Close match, but a very focused Serena when the chips were down!

Beating Mauresmo is always good.
But I love it when she beat Mauresmo following some smarty comments by her

And I think she is due for another beating after she implied that Serena withdrew from Dubai because of the way her parents raised her.

Serena- at her best- dominates from end to end more often than not, imho.

seems to be true but she nearly lost at the AO 07 to Nadia.. she def did not "dominated" the match

I'm going to throw this out and hope someone has it...

Anyone have the 2003 Roland Garros QF footage of Williams vs. Mauresmo? I don't remember seeing that one, and apparently it's something I need to see. YouTube? Megaupload? Anything? :)

You can find it here with some of Serena other classic matches.

If you haven't seen it you also need to see her 6-2, 6-1 win over Mauresmo in the 2002 Wimby SF. lol

She beat Hingis at the Nasdaq 2002 6-4 6-0. Ok what about her match against Shaunghnessy at the AO in 03 6-2 6-2. Her match against MAry Pierce at RG in 2002 was very good.

Serena def. Ivanovic 6-2 6-4

It wasnt necessarily one of her most dominating matches but one of my favorites

The Hingis USO SF of course was scary  Flawless serving in that one set :)

Also her Wimbledon 03 over Justine 6/3 6/2, not an overwhelming score like some of her beatdowns, but it was a beating...Right after JH had come through in that huge match at the FO and was riding high on confidence and in great form, Serena sent a reminder that Wimbledon still belonged to her ;)

I couldn't believe her serving in the 1st set against Martina at the 2001 US Open!!! It's the most dominant I've seen her play.

Also saw the 6-1, 6-1 Wimby QF over Capriati, but imho,I thought Jen played poorly much as Serena was playing well.
