Wowwwwww.

Maria played pretty bad throughout that match, but she dug down so deep there at the end despite being on empty. Full credit to her, wonderful fighting spirit. Glad she won it in the end.

Awesome effort from Pin, never seen her strike her groundies that well.

Wow, what a nutty match. Poor Camille, this will break her heart. But hey, she was physically superior to Maria after three hours of gruelling tennis in the heat while running 50% more than the #1 seed, so kudos to her for that level of fitness.

Reminded me a lot of Serena vs. Emilie Loit, 2003.

More like "I played a chocker"

I must say though, I feel so upset for Pin, saw her against someone else at the AO in recent years, and I thought this was the best opportunity to go into second round. She was crying when she was signing autographs. :'(

Fantastic fight Camille :worship:. She played very well at times in that 3rd set, and really stepped in and hit those groundies early. Not to mention her great defense. She's improved a ton in this past year, and is in great shape. Hopefully her year continues as well as it has started.

I'm a Maria fan, but WTF was up with that piece of shit performance?

Give credit to Camille for giving 120%, and playing with everything she had; but what's Maria's excuse? Even on a bad day, Maria shouldn't have to struggle this much in a match against this type of opponent.

Even though Maria won, I'd have to rank this up there with her bagelling by Davenport in Miami in 2005, as the worst match Maria's ever played. Holy crap! :tape:

The only positive I can think of, is that she's gotten all the "bad" out of her system with this match. Let's just hope she doesn't have anymore meltdowns in future rounds. Yeesh! :help:

I was thinking the EXACT same thing about the Serena/Loit match. What else was strange was that the last time the number one seed lost in the first round there it was the same woman who inspired Richard Williams to drive tennis to the sisters.

All this hysteria in the GM about Maria playing badly is totally ridiculous.
It wasn't her best match, that's for sure.

But this match wasn't about quality tennis. It was competition in heat endurance and toughness.
Maria got through it and this is all that matters.

In connection with that I have the question. Why those smart tournament people couldn't close the roof when the temperature was obviously over any kind of limits? They did it just after the match was over.
If they have the rule that they cannot do it during the match, that is one stupid rule and has to be changed.

Totally brainless performance by Sharapova. This girl never fails to amaze me with her stupidity. Absolutely can't think under pressure or not. Mindless ball bashing is not gonna win you a match against that sort of opposition in such extreme conditions. With a tiny bit of thought, strategy and tactics she would have finished this match in less than a hour. Instead she gets herself into deepest trouble and only Camille's inability to serve for the match saved her from defeat. No way this dumbass girl is a contender for this year AO crown.

Rest up and Good Luck the rest of the tournament, seems like you need it.

Well if they won't change this one stupid rule then some day they will lose their first seed and major drawcard in the first round. That will cost some money.

I have to admit the injury timeout was lame. :o

Camille, she just choked like no other. But Sharapova just went for broke in the last 3 games, bashing the ball left and right. It was good enough against a player with no weapons, but I don't know...

Prizeidiot
Jan 16th, 2007, 03:10 AM
I dreamed a little dream, but it didn't quite work out

Losing 11 straight points from 30-15 up serving for it... I guess Camille didn't quite have the nerve to close it out.

Reminds me a bit of the Serena - Loit match a few years back. The quality of play wasn't consistently as high as that time, but boy was it dramatic with all those crazy momentum changes.

Pin's got my respect. I'm still a little lost as to how she came so close. I figured against a big hitter like this, she wouldn't hold serve once in the match. Certainly proved me wrong.

She's apparently hard a tough time in Melbourne too. They mentioned some of the players who have beaten Pin in the last few years. It was something like Serena, Lindsay, Serena, Justine, and Maria (maybe not in that order)

Maria Croft
Jan 16th, 2007, 03:10 AM
Maria played a bad match no doubt about that, just hitting hard and staying on the baseline, but Pin’s defence was really good. The heat got to Maria, but she still was able to win even when it seemed impossible for her to even win a point :D

It was good enough against a player with no weapons, but I don't know...

Here's something to consider--how many of those big, strong, heavy, top players would have been as lively as the PIN-ball out there in 102 degree heat?

I'll answer it for you--not many.

Pin has the perfect body and perfect game for those kinds of conditions. And she maximized her game perfectly--she was determined to stay out there until Maria collapsed. And it nearly happened. In the end, though, the better player is moving on. Tennis history is full of the big players having near misses in grand slams. The best ones always seem to survive.

When I saw HK final I thought she's so slow b/c of hard physical training in offseason, but after watching this match it seems likely that she's underprepared. She will not recover to reach 2nd week. 4th round is the limit.

Pin's made a tidy little career of making big hitters look stupid for several games.

Today was a very good display of how someone with excellent gameplan but little power can totally humiliate a lumbering power player. Too bad she choked away at the end. Would have been upset of the decade, I think.

This is absolutely not the scoreboard I expected to see. Glad though that Maria pulled it through. She's such an amazing fighter. This has cost her way too much energy but I'm still sure that she can make it to the SF. She has to step up her game but I just love her for the fighter she is. What an amazing opening for her AO 2007 adventure. And I'm sure she wont be beaten anytime soon. Go Masha you made us proud by winnnig now make us proud stepping up your game and kick some ass over there! Love you.

i think this match will get her in to the tournament strongly and she will breeze through her other matches up to quarters

Well I was hoping Pin would provide some resistance for this very reason you mentioned. But this was too close for comfort and since Maria couldn´t string 2-3 good points together, playing badly for her standards, I´m afraid this match might even hurt her confidence.

I know Maria is one of the best to put bad perfomances behind her though. Let´s hope she can do it again.:yeah:

But I´m also worried she might not physically fully recover in 2 days after a draining match like this.

When Maria played well she won the points easily, when she wasnt playing so well she'd loose the points to deuce (so still pretty close)

Gosh, I never expected this, I thought she would trash Pin in 45 minutes or something. I saw the match until 5-0 in the third set and I was in shock when I saw that it ended 9-7...what a fight!!

I was really surprised by Pin. I was never of those that makes fun of her because I always thought that she had some qualities but I was impressed by her game yesterday...she needs to work on that serve though, clearly her biggest weakness.

Good luck for the rest of the year Pin!

I watch this match from start until the end. All I can say is VAMOS CAMILLE!!! :worship:

Camille did NOT believe that she can beat Masha. :( That's why i'm so mad at her. She could have won that match! Masha looked so wasted and dead tired under the scorching heat of the sun and I know that an UPSET will happen. I was shouting at the front of the TV when Masha is on the brink of defeat. I want Camille to finish that match. I know she can do it but she did not believe.

Pin is such a fighter. Saving three match points and coming back from 0-5 down in the last set in the scorching heat. Congratulations pin. She definitely deserves credit for her perfromance. She out muscled Sharapova on most of the points because she was so fast and Sharapova was so slow.

Sharapova definitely would have lost the match if she had an opponent that could hit pace and non pace shots.

Sharapova's game is too dependent on pace. Thats something she needs to sort out because from Pins serve, Sharapova should have hit all of them for winners but she's so used to fast serves that she got her timing wrong on the very slow ones Pin produced.

Jan 16th, 2007, 01:43 PM
I only caught the end of the match but I was quite impressed with Pin's composure. She really played within herself and didn't try to overhit with Maria. She just kept hitting it cleanly. Too bad she couldn't pull off the upset. By the way, not sure if this has been posted yet, but anybody catch Maria's little expletive to the umpire when questioning a call? Something like "Are you f-ing serious?" Haha the commentator on ESPN2, Chris Fowler, quickly apologized and changed the subject.

I really enjoyed the match, just didn´t like the end.Is Camille Pin the player who are always said to be the worst top 100 player(the worst shots, the worst everything... is always Camille Pin. I said some days ago that she´s going in the right direction, and she impressed me with her fighting spirit and defending and she quick and reads the game very very well, and she also produced some shots with power, i was surprised, she really tried to do what she had to do.

Kudos to Camille for coming back from 5-0 in the third set, but shame on her for freezing up whe she served for the match. Fortunately, I don't see Maria taking advantage of her once agains easy draw to the quarters. She wasn't her normal cocky self when she started to run out of gas.

well camille, it was SO much fun while it lasted. i watched the whole match live and the comeback in the third was both unexpected and asolutely amazing! i enjoyed the every bit of the match except the last 2 games when i knew it was over

at 6-6, i really thought cammy was going to win

you are the single cutest thing i have ever seen in all my days and you DEFINITELY have a fan in me!!! just wish you could have closed it out!

i will love you forever

well dont maria - i dont know how you managed to summon up so much power in the last three games but i guess it just shows how much of a fighter you are.

the lack of B plan and 65 unforced errors however...

congratulations :)

I've mixed feelings with this match.

i got the impression at the beginning that Masha wasn't feeling good in the court. She played really bad from the beginning, but she won the first set simply 'cause she is better than Pin. The second set won Pin cause she didn't make too many unforced errors as in the first one and Masha was playing even worse. And the 3rd set is...

is so hard to explain. How a number one can miss a 5-0 advantage? how someone that it seems "almost dead" can make her best shots after almost 3 hours?

i didn't like her game yesterday but she's a great fighter, and at the end she won that it's the important thing here. Next match will be a totally different one.

Still one of the 3-4 favorites to win, as i think that with her personality this match is gonna make her stronger. Another thing will be that maybe she isn't in the best shape yet, but... she know better how she's than me

Maria won't go away without a fight, and this match proved it. Heat is nothing to play around with, and I'm glad she's okay. This reminds me of Capriati's match against Hingis in 2002 - Cap fought and fought, and came out on top. Same thing for Maria, and that's going to help her if she can recover quickly enough.

My respect to the french girl.. Camille did an awsome job to come from a 5-0 in the third to 7 - 6 for the match... It was just a great match.. she knows now she can do some stuffs and I can say was great to see her hitting to the lines... Camille won the crowd that was supported her so is a big prize to her this AO... even when she is out..

Well.. hopefully Maria gonna have a best calm 2rd..

"I was so delusional I couldn't think"
Maria Sharapova is asked about her mental state when the heat took its toll.

"I was so close that I thought it was my day but apparently it was not, so next time."
Camille Pin is impressively calm after missing out on beating top seed Sharapova.

Pin's made a tidy little career of making big hitters look stupid for several games.

Today was a very good display of how someone with excellent gameplan but little power can totally humiliate a lumbering power player. Too bad she choked away at the end. Would have been upset of the decade, I think.

You wished.

Maria would have been "humiliated" if she had lost - and maybe not even then. As it was, and as you can see by the reaction here and elsewhere, this is being taken as her Corretja moment. Truth, spin, it doesn't matter.
