Sigh. She's only setting us up to break our hearts.

But I love her anyway. I am one sick bastard. A good win for Lena, and hopefully a sign of things to come outside of Australia.

for those wondering, elena had 3 aces, all early in the second set, and 6 double faults. a tame serving day, really. 17 winners and 18 errors, so definitely good off the ground. foretz had 21 more errors than winners. still, great to see her survive the first hurdle. hopefully she can make the rare nice run here. :yeah:

7/10 at net, max. ;)

That's a pretty big hurdle to get out of the way for Elena. Now everything she does from here on in adds to her ranking I believe.

And nice of her not to give her adoring fans a heart attack. A nice easy win.

Well done Lena, its always a worry with your first rounds in the Land that gave the world the Rotary Clothes Drier ,I expected you to win as Foretz really isnt in your class ,but its simply never that simple ,but this time it was.

Bad Luck Foretz ,I guess when you saw the draw ,of all the top tenners you could have drawn , you prob thought you stood a very good chance ,but sadly ,no one told the Golden Goddess that. Foretz my dear ,good show ,but I am afraid , YOU HAVE BEEN DEMENTINATED! ( not often I can say that at the AO)

I just got to see 1 winner from Foretz, Fh winner after a long rally, She was hitting the ball so hard, that couldn't even control her shots.

This is probably the last time Lena plays the AO as one of the 8 top seeds, so it's good to see she began the campaign with a good win.

The DF stats seem acceptable, and above all she got broken only once.

And making a good run in here would go a long way towards disproving my opening sentence.

 What makes you say that? She's only 25.

There are more bums than seats on the #6-12 range right now. And I fear Lena, now that she's finally realised she'll never win a Slam, will lack the motivation to play a full schedule at a consistently high level - because defending her current ranking, with Jankovic, Safina, Chak and others bearing down on it, will require nothing less.

Lena CAN win a slam. And I think she believes it...she has to. I don't know if I do, but she has to. She should just retire if she doesn't believe it.

I don't think she believes in that anymore. The loss in the USO QF last year was the wake up call.

What remains to be seen is if staying a top ten player and fighting for the occasional TII title are enough to motivate Lena to play on for say a couple more seasons. Defending her ranking is difficult but not impossible, and it would be excellent if she managed to repeat her successful 2006 season (2 titles, 2 Slam QFs, top 10 throughout the year).

Players who were once contenders for major titles but are now gradually sinking into mediocrity and struggling with lack of motivation are becoming quite common: you have Nastya, who is probably considering retirement now that she's realised she'll never make it back to the top 10, you have the once dominant Hewitt, you have Gaudio, you have JCF, who these days just looks like he can't be arsed to fight - and all of them have the satisfaction of knowing they'll retire as Slam winners. Lena doesn't even have that.

you make a lot of sense and i love your posts (really), but i couldn't disagree more. part of being a champion is believing you can win anything. if lena is still playing, then i think it's because she thinks she can win a slam. we all know our girl is a late bloomer, so i'd say that she still has a chance. even if it's not on pure skill, maybe she can will her way to a slam. i've always thought it'd be funny (and fitting) if elena wins the AO (considering she's done shit there), but again, i don't THINK it'll happen and i don't know if it will be this year. it's just a consideration.

i think lena is not through surprising us yet. i'm sure you saw the match against jankovic at the USO --- she played AWFUL and jelena was out for revenge. situations could be different.

thanks to this post, i find myself believing elena can do it. so i should be thanking you because my belief wavered for a while.

MisterMan
Jan 16th, 2007, 10:01 PM
She can still beat anyone on any given day. You just never know with her.
And no one here knows what she's thinking (she realizes she'll never win a Slam ???)
That's just pure speculation on your part, it's never been even remotely hinted at from Elena herself.

Hewitt is married , that is his biggest problem . Tennis is there , he is playing too erratic like never did play before due to lack of training .

I think he leaves to Becky :tape: , he takes tennis seriously again and he back to top 3 easily .

Gatone Gaudio.... well , he is special
