It's nice to see that the top women will actually play doubles...I wish the men would be more open to it.

It's nice to see that the top women will actually play doubles...I wish the men would be more open to it.

Nadia Petrova plays doubles quite regularly, as late as the US summer hard court season with Navratilova.

Svetlana plays doubles regularly with Amelie (or used to). While Kim was #1 in the world.

The problem is nowadays, other than Hingis, most of the top 10 either injured this or injured that. For them, playing those extra matches becomes extra burdens for them. The situation is more or less the same with men.

OMG! This is great news!

Martina is playing doubles again!! I know some fans might think it would be to hard on her body but I think it can only her strengthen her game and Sveta is the perfect choice...Great serve, a lot of power, all-court game!!!! :lick:

They could definitely win this!!!

Though it could be a struggle I think both Martina and Sveta will make there respective 1/4's...to move on from that will probably be very difficult but I wouldn't count out either of them...

Didn't see that pair the 1st time I looked at the Draw. I am glad Severine has really come into her own and that she is playing here with MOMO!!

They could meet Sveta/Martina in the 1/4's

Very excited to see Hingis playing with Kuznetsova! :bounce: I would love to see them take the title. And I hope she can defend her Mixed title as well.

I have 4 channels showing the Aussie Open and usually the 2nd Fox channel shows lots of doubles so I hope we get to see lots of Hingis matches again like we did last year. The DVD Recorders will be going around the clock! :)

So is Martina playing mixed doubles too?? I think it would be too much exhausting to her!

I was hoping Sveta would play with Nadia. But Nadia has an abdominal injury, and she's day to day.

Martina and the terminator are friends and should make an interesting doubles team. Personally, I think this could be good for Martina, as her best hope in singles for winning titles is to become more aggressive and get to the net more often. She net practice she gets in doubles could benefit her there.

I love this team, but I on't think they planned it for months. It probably was the last minute decision as both of them felt like needing more match practice.

Anyway, good luck girls

I agree - doubles is always beneficial for a player to improve their net play and tactics around the court, which of course they can then implement into their singles game.

Hopefully they'll do well :D

Martina/Sveta is awesome team. Hope one of them doesn't pull out later because of going deep in singles.

This is great news. I hope neither one pulls out and that America shows them on TV. I am curious to see how these 2 play doubles together. This team seems well balanced.

i think they should do very well. Both are great volleyers, and Hingis will do a great job of setting Sveta up with putaways - just like with Kournikova.

This is an EXCELLENT team!

If neither pulls out for their singles i honestly think that they are equal favourites for the title....with raymond/stosur and yan/zheng.

hopefully they can make the final - cos it's on tv here!

Awesome news for hingis.. could this be doubles title.. no.4 ? at aus open ?

Hingis won singles in 1997, 1998, 1999. Hingis won doubles in 1997, 1998, 1999 and 2002. Hingis won mixed in 2006. She's got 8 Aussie Open crowns already. If she wins with Sveta, it'd be her fifth doubles title and ninth overall crown.

Provided Hingis has a little break after her singles match, they should easily beat team Russia. ;)
