I just hope Nicole can defend her points since the area of rankings she is in now is such a tight race.... But like I said previously, I think that if she doesn't reach the QF (at least) it will be disappointing. It depends on the draw though. :)

Just for fun before the draw,I listed few players I want Nicole to face at Ao:

Tatiana Golovin-Yea,just because it's two of my favs.
Maria Sharapova-everyone is excepting a match between the both.
Martina Hingis-I would love to this how the match can turn.
After that, maybe why not Kuz,Petrova,Jankovic for the revenge.....

Derek.
Jan 11th, 2007, 11:45 PM
I wish she would have gotten Hingis in the 4R instead of Dementieva.

All in all, I like the draw.

If she's on her game then once again she can make it deep into the tournament.

Expecing at least a 4R, hopefully further though.

Good luck Nicole! :D

Good luck Nikki.

Pretty happy with the draw. Srebotnik is IMO the weakest of the 17-24 seeds, so Nikki shouldn't really have many problems with her.

Dementieva in the 4th round though. Although perhaps she won't face Lena, as she has had some pretty surprising early round losses here before.

Anyway, can't wait to see Nikki play again. :worship:

I think martina is playing better than Elena D. I think Nicole will beat Elena, she definately is in the better half of the draw. She could reach the QF or semis. Plus im glad shes not in martinas half cos i like both of them. I will cheering for Nicole on mon or tues wen she plays i will be there for both days. Im starting to like nikki more and more. I cant beleive she is only 17, she stayed so focused in her match against Ana and the serbian crowd were a bit enthusiastic and sometimes nikki had to wait to serve but she still stayed so focused. Cant wait to see her play live again :)

I'll be there cheering for Nikki too. ;)

As much as I like Martina too, I would've preferred Nikki to have to her in the 4th round than Elena. Nikki seems to struggle against Lena, whereas I think she could overpower Martina much easier.

I think they key for this Australian Open will be whether or not Nikki can get past Lena in the 4th round. (Providing they both get there) If she can do that, I can deifnitely see her in the Semis if not the final.

From TBE's Ranking thread

2006 Pts off: Aus Open (+ITFs)
Ranks for 29 Jan 2007
AUSTRALIAN OPEN GS (Fri Q2)

9 Dinara Safina 1439
10 Jelena Jankovic 1420
11 Patty Schnyder 1406
12 Nicole Vaidisova 1334

Nope, and I don't think she will, as most times only top seeds do. Anyways, not long to go anymore from now on, onyl couple of hours..

Though I would have prefered it if Nicole focused on her singles apperance at the Australian Open.Find it weird that she almost never plays doubles during "normal" tournaments,.. but always then or almost always the grand slams.

She often plays doubles during the summer (San Diego,Standford.....) but always on Gs too.Yea,normally,it's better to be focused on single but as she loses most of the time rapidly,it doesn't waste her energy at least. She really worked on her body last winter. She seems more stronger.

Open-Vaidisova stutters into second round in Melbourne

MELBOURNE, Jan 15 (Reuters) - Czech teenager Nicole Vaidisova suffered a second set stutter before prevailing over American veteran Jill Craybas 6-4 5-7 6-1 in her opening match at the Australian Open on Monday.

The 17-year-old, who reached the semi-finals at Roland Garros in her breakthrough year of 2006, smashed 18 aces as she finally overhauled the athletic 32-year-old American and now faces Venezuela's Milagros Sequera in the second round.

A single break was sufficient for the 10th seed to take the first set in 39 minutes but Craybas, who has never passed the third round in seven attempts at Melbourne Park, hit back with two breaks to take the second.

Vaidisova, a fourth-round loser to champion Amelie Mauresmo last year, ran away with it in the third, breaking the Craybas serve three times to seal victory in an hour and 52 minutes with a crunching forehand service return down the line.

Just read that today Nicole is #1 in serving the most Aces (24), followed by Serena (17) and Kuzi (13). When you display the highest Serve Speed, the order is Serena, Molik, and Petrova. Nicole is nowhere to be found among the top ten power servers . Can someone explain how she serves low-speed aces . Is that one of her  secrets to success ??

Lunaris
Jan 18th, 2007, 01:34 AM
^^ She is tall and that allows her to hit some nasty angles. Even if the servis is a little bit slower comparing to some other big-serving players (she can hit more than 170 km/h whenever she wants which is certainly not slow in women's game) her opponents have huge problems to reach the ball. And she is accurate most of the time (not mentioning the match against Golovin in autumn :o ).

According to the AO stats, Nicole's fastest serve has been 110mph

Derek.

Usually Nicole's towards the top when it comes to the fastest serve lists.

But perhaps she is more focused on placement and a high first serve percentage instead of just speed. ;)

I'm excited for the match. It is great she made 4R again this year, but it will be even better if she can make her first AO QF and doing so by beating a top 10 player. I just hope the result this year in 4R is different than last year (against Amelie). :tape:

Nicole will need to cut down on the DF and UE, serve well, and take any opportunities she gets on Elena's serve. Their 1 WTA match was close (as was HK exhibition) so hopefully Nicole will finally be able to edge out Elena this time.

I think in HK they both had the same amount of DF in the match (9?), Nicole definitely doesn't need to do that this time.

Elena only had 4 DF in her 3R match:scared: But 16 in the one before that.. as we know she can be up and down... So hope match against Nicole - Elena will not be at her best w/ serving. :p

When I saw Nicole play at the French Open 2006 (http://geocities.com/andrewbroad/tennis/vaidi/french_open2006.html), I was amazed by her serve - not just the power, but the regularity with which she was hitting the lines and corners!

When I saw her play at Moscow 2006, I was concerned by the abbreviated backswing on her serve (due to her shoulder-injury).

But when I see statistics such as today's - 12 aces, and winning 89% of the points when she got her first serve in - it's very encouraging! :D

N. VAIDISOVA/K. Srebotnik

6‑4, 6‑4

Q. Your impressions of the game? What did you think?

I'm pretty happy. I've got a fourth round again. Tough conditions, you know, waiting here the whole day. Don't know really when you go on. But served pretty well. Got the breaks where I needed them. Was the better player on the crucial points. Just very excited to play on Sunday again.

Q. There's been a few different delays. How hard is that to keep yourself mentally up and about?

Well, I think we got all the delays we could possibly have. We had the rain, we had the heat. Just waiting for a tornado to come or something. But it's part of it. One match I played under the roof, now outside. But it's part of it here. You have to expect it and just get ready for it as best as possible.

Q. What do you think you did particularly well? What was the difference in the match for you?

NICOLE VAIDISOVA: You know, it's always tough because she's such a good returner. We have to focus really hard the first shot after serve, right be ready. I returned very well. Stepped in the court.

Q. Who do you play now?

NICOLE VAIDISOVA: Safarova.

Q. Have you played her before?

NICOLE VAIDISOVA: Yeah, I think we played a couple times.

Q. Are you surpassing your expectations coming into the tournament? Are you feeling at the top of your game?

NICOLE VAIDISOVA: I feel good. I don't think I'm surpassing my expectations because I knew I was playing well. I had a good off‑season, had a good run in Sydney. Just very happy I won today and very excited about my next match

Congrats Nicole :yeah:

I have seen a bit of the match, as I wasn't able to sleep. Her serve was off in my opinion, if it was on, she would have won even easier I am sure. And she still made too many UEs.

She only had one ace, but perhaps it was due to Dementieva's great return game.

It was a tougher match than the scoreline says.

I watched the last part of the 2nd set vs Elena. Nicole was hitting some great shots.

Upsets a boost for Williams, Vaidisova

Linda Pearce
January 22, 2007

NICOLE Vaidisova is the highest-ranked player remaining in the seed-ravaged bottom half of the Australian Open women's draw, meaning one of Saturday's finalists will come from the group comprising 10th seed Vaidisova, 16th seed Shahar Peer, world No.70 Lucie Safarova and No.81 Serena Williams.

On a rain-interrupted day of upsets at Melbourne Park, Vaidisova's elimination of seventh seed Elena Dementieva was not a surprise of Safarova-topples-Mauresmo proportions, but it still means that none of the four women seeded to reach the last eight from that section will feature in tomorrow's quarter-finals.

Williams is certainly of top-eight standard, even if it is some time since she played that way, and even longer since she was able to do so consistently. But she has upended the fifth seed (Nadia Petrova) and now the 11th (Jelena Jankovic) in consecutive rounds and, suddenly, the two-time open champion is a contender once more.

Peer, 19, is the first Israeli woman to reach a grand slam quarter-final, her achievement coming at the expense of Svetlana Kuznetsova, the third seed who had lost just 10 games in her three previous matches but managed to win only six yesterday.

"I beat two times top 10 players, but not top five," said Peer, the 2004 Australian junior champion, who will meet Williams next. "First time for me to reach the quarter-final. I just went there and gave everything, played my game.

"Serena, she's a great champion. She won so many grand slams. You never know who's going to win. But I'm just going to go out there like today and give everything I have. I have nothing to lose."

What will be an all-Czech, all-teen second quarter-final extends a head-to-head contest that Safarova, the elder by almost two years, trails 1-2. Victory would enable 17-year-old Vaidisova to emulate her breakthrough semi-final appearance at last year's French Open, Dementieva's open run having ended in the fourth round for the third time.

It will shock no one to learn that the Russian served abysmally, landing just 35 per cent of her first serves and winning barely a third of the points on her second ball.

Dementieva has reached two grand slam finals with a serve of pennant standard, but not even her groundstrokes could compensate yesterday as the powerful Vaidisova broke seven times and hit 27 winners to eight.

"I don't think I'm surpassing my expectations because I knew I was playing well," Vaidisova said.

Super win against Demetieva!!! :bounce: :bounce: :bounce: I'm sooo glad, revenge is sweet! :D

But I'm more than afraid that whoever from Nikki/Lucka makes the semis, it'll be the final destination, cos Williams seems unstoppable - took Jankovic apart and that's something to say. In case Nikki gets past Lucka (very possible) and then Williams (almost mission impossible), beating Sharapova or Clijsters in the final should be a formality.

I'm sad 'cos Lena lost..............................but honestly I'm happier because Nicole won:) .

Her possibilities to make her way to the semis is way bigger than the posibilities that Elena had that is for sure.

I think Nicole has a great chance to be in the final.

I think that Lucie still don't believe that she beat Momo......

Lucie played a great match but I think that the biggest part of her victory was the fact that Momo wasn't having a good day.
And Nicole beat Lena 'cos Nicole completely over power my dear Lena even when I just saw the ending of the match the little I could see Elena wasn't playing bad(of course besides that fucking serve) its just that Nicole was too much for her.

Of all my favorites Nicole is the one that makes me happy the rest of them:rolleyes: ...................."se apendejan" way too much sometimes.

VAMOS NICOLE............THE NEXT BIG THING:worship: :worship:

When Nicole and Lucie played in Montreal I remember Nicole was barely winning points on Lucie's serve at parts in the match. However, Nicole withdrew from Montreal, so she wasn't 100% healthy.

This match will be just as tough because of the chance at making slam SF. So I hope Nicole handles the situation and will be able to tough out the win and make her 2nd slam SF.

I think it depends on Nicole's nerves, that's right.

People are talking too much about Serena right now,Nicole is becoming the underdog. And I think, she loves when she has to faced someone everyone think she will lost against her.(Amelie and Venus) Then she became the favorite in her Sf (Kuznetsova) and she lost it.

It's a Gs,everything can happen and Nicole can create the surprise, nothing is written.I believe she can do something great.

Nicole became nervous in her last match because I think she was really frightened about Lena's returns. The pivot match will be against Lucie,if she win it,Then.....she can do some damages.
