A good draw would be nice but she is going to have learn to beat the top players at some point. Maybe she can learn how to here. Plus her seed isn't so good anyway so a good draw might not be much of a possibility.

Yes I would be very happy with another quarterfinal. To do that she will probably need to beat a top 10 player. Draw isn't likely to open up for her again like it did in US Open. I know she beat Petrova who was top 10 but she was still not back in good form after the injury yet.

In the 3rd round, Tati will play one of the following: Safina, Vaidisova, Jankovic, Chakvetadze, Ivanovic, Schiavone, Hantuchova, and Peer.

Vaidisova and Jankovic are in really good form so they'd be the worst draws. Plus, Tati has a bad record against Ivanovic.

I think Hantuchova would be the absolute best draw, but I also wouldn't mind Chakvetadze or Schiavone.

Tati's 3rd round opponent is Shahar Peer. Her first match is against Anna Smashnova . She might be able to squeeze to the third round. If she can get past 3rd round, she can squeeze to QF where she'd face nemesis Petrova/Jankovic. Overall it's a decent draw.

So here's the breakdown of her opponents.
R1 : vs Smashnova.
R2 : vs Fernandez
R3 : vs Peer. The tough one is here.
R4 : vs Sveta/Makiri. Sveta hasn't been injured and Makiri is injured.

But for Tati, 1st round match is the most important. C'mon, rack all those ranking points and get your ass back to top 20.

Translation with my F-rated French :

Tati said that it was a good match to start. That the wind did not bother her today as it did while she practised yesterday.
Then she ended with some big words about her chance @ AO.
"I think it would depend on my play, not so much on my opponents. If I play like what I did for the past two months, I should do well."

I might be wrong since my French is kinda F-ish

Harju.
Jan 15th, 2007, 03:17 PM
Anyway, my take on the match.

I think Tati played much better than I expected from the short video that nouf posted. It seemed to me that Tati is getting more aggresive with her forehands. You'd notice that she didn't stay at the baseline as often as she did last time. Also, she's playing a higher risk tennis now. Meaning, more errors but also more winners at the same time. Her serve is still not at the best yet. But overall, it's a good first round match.

The stats
W/UE = 22/27
Net points won 8/16
1st serve % in - 70%

Tati twisted her ankle during her practise on Saturday :o. I'm not really good with my French, I think she sort of twisted her ankle during her jog, but I guess it wasn't serious since she won her match convincingly yesterday.

But obviously being Tati, it is not the only injury she had. She had otitis (ear infection). She had it when she reached Sydney. She said she hears buzzes and whenver she bends down to tie her lace, she'd feel giddy. She's under antibiotics. I don't know whether she still has it or not though

K again from french article that I read, apparently Tati still suffers from the ear buzzes or infection or whatever it is. She'd go for a check up tomorrow because the anti biotics were not helpful. But according to her, the good thing about it is that she's able to concentrate on the match  and minimize her UEs as she tried to play the shortest point possible.

Hope it's not serious.

Initially I thought it shouldn't be that difficult for Tati since she enjoys playing someone who's like Shahar that doesn't hit that hard but defends well. After all she's beaten Chaky and Kirilenko. But the people @ GM started to give me :scared:. All the best Tati. Please win.

Absolutely, but (there's always one;))....well Tati's definitely a top ten material, but at the same time still far from her max...and to be honest, I don't think she's gonna establish herself there (mean the top ten) without a full-time coach...not at this age at least...

She had thousand occasions to win that match in two or in three. Not a bad show of course, but still disappointing. She needs to have her super serve back.
But at least, Tati realized how important it is for her to develop her net play. She was too passive at the crucial moments. I want her to work more on her physical conditions as well.
I expect though a nice reaction at Paris where the French public will support till the end. But here again, she will have many points to defend, so she won't be able to improve her ranking that much.

Overall, Tati played a good season so far. Her average level is pretty high, she will stay in the top 20 for sure.

Paris me manque...»

Jan 20th, 2007, 06:55 AM
I was very frustrated with Tati. Count yourself lucky if you weren't following the score cause I was a big mess. So many wasted opportunities in the second and the third set but she just couldn't capitalize them. Her stats were impressive until 5-4 in the third. She folded like a cheap ho after that.

Tati should have closed the match 6-3 6-3 or even 6-2 in the third.

Initially when she had close matches with top players, I was like, it's ok, at least Tati gave a good fight. Then after sometimes, I was like, it's ok, she was injured and she'd learn how to win these matches eventually. Then after some times, it's getting annoying. And now, I've come to realize that Tati will never make it. Until she gets herself a real coach or a real weapon to her arsenal, she'd just hover around top 15-20. And forget about getting a title. I really hope she proves me wrong though, but I gave up.

orfeus
Jan 20th, 2007, 05:58 PM
bah, sooo much pessimism, what's the matter with u people?? Sure I'm dissapointed she waisted her chance again, but on the other hand:
1) as I've already said, she's still faaar from her Stuttgart level...and I think she needs like 1-2 months to get there..of course I hope I'm wrong there, but:sad:
2) even her Stutt. level is far from her max...to get there, she definitely needs a full time coach; the sooner she realizes it, the better...
3) even a full time coach/es won't make her stop choking, but definitely can help her to get to the top 10, which is precisely the case of Nadia...(have u seen her match against Serena btw?...now, THAT was choking...)...then it's all just up to her...

HTE
Jan 20th, 2007, 06:11 PM
It's not about pessimism orfeus, not from me at least, it's about disappointment.
I wouldn't mind at all if Tati had lost a close three setter in a GS to Peer, for most players that's a great result, but not for Tati. She's a top-player but seems to forget it the crucial times. So most of the negative reactions are due to her under achieving once again.

Jan 20th, 2007, 06:55 PM
I think it's a little bit prematurate to be that disappointed. Tati didn't prepare well during the break because of her injury. She needs to have her serve back, then, it will be easier for her to conclude matches as she will know she has a reliable weapon.
Tati was not at her best physically in this AO. She was too much passive during the second set and was not moving as good as she usually does. She seemed tired. But I hope she is still motivated : I didn't like her attitude against Peer, she wasn't encourageing herself, even in her interview, she said that she was glad of what she did in Australia. She needs to be more determinated.

Now, she has two weeks to train and to think about these losses. We will be able to rate her at Paris or Antwerp. But don't give up !;) :)

i'm not sure how important her play or her current form are. in the past when she's healthy, she still hasn't figured out how to close the tight matches. i think it's all in the head right now.

Of course, I'm disappointed about that match against Peer... but why so much pessimism???

Remember that she only had 2 or 3 weeks of training before the new season begins... I think she must still have some apprehension about her ankles... And also remember last year: Tati's 2006 season had only really begun in Paris!
I also think that her two first rounds were too easy for her... So after a match against Peer...:tape:
