Sveta  although she did have to pull out of her Hong Kong match against Zheng last week due to bronchitis, so maybe the effects of that are still affecting her. i'm sure she'll be alright for the AO, fingers crossed :)

congrats kata :)

Apparently, Svetlana was having breathing problems during the match:

just found this quote from sveta:

"This really disappoints me a lot," she said. "But I just need to stop in the middle of the rally to breathe, and my nose is closed and I hear everything ringing in my ears.

"The blood is going up and I can't really focus with everything else."

"I definitely will play the Australian Open but if I feel a bit like this I will push myself and maybe I will have to retire again," she added.

"I am really motivated to play. But if I am the same way as I am today, I won't. But if I get better, I think I should.

"It's impossible I stay like this one more week. It's not that serious for me."

I've heard Sveta played just to see what her condition is.
Obviously a bad decision. I hope she can recover in time for the AO though.

Kata got a bit lucky today, hopefully she can capitalise against Li and reach the semis.

Sveta is a very tough girl. She might not go far in Melbourne, but she'll play.

Talk about a terrible 24 hours for the top Russians in Sydney.

Safina loses to Pratt, Elena blows a 5-2 lead, Petrova and Kuznetsova retire...

It's a good thing Sydney is only a Tier II. It's like New Haven, a very small unimportant event.
