These pics aren't great, but, her legs look huge again.

Williams wants her serve working better before she heads to Melbourne for the Australian Open next week.

"I just want to work on my serve and be able to serve a little faster by the time I get to Melbourne," she said.

"There is so much more I have to do.

"I have to go home and study and I know my mum is going to tell me some things I don't want to hear but I know I need to hear.

"This is just the start, I'm taking it one match at a time."

She wants to go home and study? Um...

Her legs are always huge. lol
But her fitness is okay for me and she is still much thinner than she was in AO last year. Even though i think she gained weight after US Open.

she looks a little heavier than at the USO but she hasnt really played at all except against Venus since then so thats a lil understandable she just needs to make sure her serve is getting better and her ground strokes are as piercing as they can be and her fitness would be the least of her problems because those two elements is what got her to the top if she continues to play and not just "rest" she'll be fine by RG and have a really good shot at the Wimbldon title this year

The woman is still clearly on her own planet, somewhere where she's winning a third Wimbledon title, becomes a credible poet, while being the size of Oprah Winfrey only halfway into her diet.

She's been trying to play herself into shape for 2 years now. How long is it going to take?

What I don't understand is why she needs so long to get back into this shape when she took months off in 2003/2004 and came back in amazing shape to win Miami (her first tournament since last July). She doesn't need to play herself into shape. Yes, she's had a 'chronic' knee injury and it's taken a lot of time to get over that, but why this much time? And from reading a couple of comments her knee still isn't 100%?! Why haven't we heared anything about the 'chronic wrist injury' she pulled out of the fall tourmaents with? It's all just really shady to me.

You read her blog and she barely mentions anything about her tennis. The only thing I remember is the McDonald's tour advertisement.

She didn't have weight to lose in 2003>2004 :p She's just not the type of person who is gonna go and just exercise. She hates it. That attitude has to change and the sooner she figures it out, the better.

Serena looked fantastic at the US Open. She was much thinner and fitter in person than the TV showed (it puts 10 lbs on you). Plus, it's hard to tell what physical shape she's in from the picture you posted. It could be a weird angle, especially with that big top she has on. We don't know what her abs or her arms look like. So, can we end the speculation until we have either better pictures or see her in person at the AO?

P.S. As everyone has stated, her looks have always been big.

:inlove:
Jan 8th, 2007, 09:26 PM
She looks alright. But alright isn't great. She needs to lose some more weight if she wants to get right back to the top.
Improvement from AO 06, but she looked better at the USO. :(

How do you know? She had knee surgery and couldn't run for weeks/months... I'm sure she gained a LOT of weight during that time and lost it all before Miami. Did she have surgery after the AO 2005? She played Wimbledon and the Open that year totally out of shape.

Also is that a scar or shadow of something on her leg.

I'm so sick of everyone looking at Serena's pics and speculating about how big she is, when you really can't tell. Now, the following are pics of her in October and November of last year respectively. You tell me if she's "fat and distorted" in either of them. No, she's not in 2002 shape, but she's getting there. Give her some time. How much weight could she have gained in one month from November when she was in Africa?

Thank you for the additional pictures, paco.

Look, guys - she's obviously in much better shape than she was last year. I'm really shocked people are even disputing this. Give her some credit! She's getting there, albeit slowly.

Here is our dear Serena last year:

I'm glad I made somebody laugh, even if that made me a hater. I always take such terms with the grain of salt that they deserve.

Anyway, Serena looks ANYTHING BUT an athlete in those pictures. And I wouldn't normally mention this, because it's personal, nothing to do with her tennis, and I don't want it to be construed as bitchy, but in at least one of those pictures her skin doesn't look too good.

Venus has had skin problems in recent years, just as her tennis has suffered. Now Serena, who always appeared to have great skin. Neither of them look healthy at the moment. They both look stressed-out, which is when adult acne typically arrives. Maybe there is some correlation between their skin becoming blotchy, induced perhaps by stress or some kind of respiratory illness, and their tennis going down the pan?

Idk, but some of the pictures of now, don't really do justice. There at different angles then the before. I was looking at pics from Serena during 2004 and 2005 and she looked very similar or just like she did in 2003 and 2002. Thighs looks the same and so does her stomach. During the FO 2004 she was at a very very good fitness level and her thighs to me don't look drastically different from the recent Hobart pics. I believe if she loses around 10-15 pounds more she'll be around 2005 Aus Open or even better maybe 2004. She'll get there, her body has changed obviously more muscle and the accompany of fat. She'll get there. Serena's body is just a wider body. Her thick legs and breasts are going to make a not defined with a little bit of weight midsection and hips appear much larger than a girl with a leaner and slimmer body.

It's obvious that Serena still has some work to do. I think Serena can win many more GS but she has got to get into better shape. At 06 US Open she was not in the best of shape and still beat some pretty good players and 6-0 Momo so she can still has game but lack fittness.

Couver
Jan 9th, 2007, 01:43 AM
Serena looks fine to me. Is she in the shape she was in, in 2002-2003? No but that's because it's 2007 and Serena isn't the same player she was back then. Her body has been through a lot including surgery and she's older now. Peoples bodies do change with age you know. It may be that Serena's body is no longer able to be the shape it was when she was dominating. Her injury clearly took a major toll on her body, mind, and tennis. I find it unfair to think she could magically transform herself into what she used to be 4 years later.

To me this is a new Serena. Who has to find her feet with the changes she's had to make because of her injury. She doesn't look unfit to me in the slightest, just different. The thing is that her weight has been something that has been picked on for years now, and it won't matter how much Serena drops. Some will still think she looks fat, or isn't training properly etc. But the truth is Serena knows what she has to do, and she's the only one that knows what is best for her.

I see the naysayers clearly ignored the most recent pics of her in October and November of '06 and posted pictures of her when she was 17 and 18 years old to contrast with a 25 year old woman who's had injuries, a couple of surgeries, a tragic loss of a sibling and seemingly unending circus court trial in the matter of the last two years.

You cannot tell what shape she's in in these pics of her at Hobart.

To answer the question, her fitness is definitely better than last year. Last year she wasn't able to win 3 matches at Australia, with days rest in between. She has already shown she is ready to fight for win, two days in a row and a LONG second round match. Her match tonight will show if she is in good enough condition to win once again. I don't care the opponent, she's coming back.

well she's 25 now...it won't be impossible to look near her peak form in 2002-2003, but i'd say her 2002 shape back then was physically the best ever seen from a woman tennis player.

She needs to tone up again, that's all and build up on the endurance. Last year, she was huffin and puffin all over the place after a long rally. The Serena Williams we all know could and will out last any one on any given day and more.

It's good to see that she is trying to get her self back up there.

Jan 9th, 2007, 10:01 PM
She definitely has a more womanly body than 4 years ago. You know, everything, including metabolism slows down as you get older. You have to work 10% harder then 2 years ago to get the same body and 50% to get the same body from 5 years ago. You get the picture. She looks OK but her body has definitely changed.

I think Serena looks ok!
since when did she change her racquet?

If you take in consideration that Chakvetadze's worse surface is rebound ace which is why she's playing Hobart in the first place, then yes Serena could beat her with one arm.
I still think Anna will be able to make the finals.
She better be aware that Zheng could easily beat her if she's just a bit off on this surface though.
Serena looks fine to me.
I'm not worried about the weight, I'm worried about the movement.

If a pro doesn't use preventative tape on rebound ace, then they're just begging for an injury.
I wasn't sure. Thanks for clearing that up :wavey:

As long as she win.... I don't care...there will always be something people have to say, but I think she's DEFINATLEY moving in the right direction! :yeah:

She looks great here IMO

I think she's fitter than last yr. The fact she's wearing the sweatshirt makes her look a bit bigger that always happens and her legs are always big. She's prob not back to peak fitness but it may take a while

She looks better than last year - and that's a positive start.

She looks fine. I'm sure if she's still consistently playing and not backing out of things, she'll be looking great by Roland Garros.

I don't think she's in good enough shape to win the AO.

She looks better than she did at the US Open

Thank you for the additional pictures, paco.

Look, guys - she's obviously in much better shape than she was last year. I'm really shocked people are even disputing this. Give her some credit! She's getting there, albeit slowly.

Here is our dear Serena last year:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v84/shanodins/eyepress011706.jpg

I can't believe anyone would say that she hasn't improved! This picture is horrendous! Compare it to these recent pics. All she needs is a little more time and she'll become the grand slam champion we used to know.

I think she looks fine.

And plus, the girl has so much determination that as long as her injuries stay away, she fights through - with some more match play, she'll be very dangerous.

though i think b/w then and now Serena graduated from being a girl to becoming a woman :)

She appears to look better than she did at the US Open, but how the hell can ou tell off of these three pictures? Hopefully she'll wear something different tomorrow and we will be able to see better.

:haha:

I guess all of these posts were, *mistakes*

This reminds me so much of talking about MOnica from about 1999-2002, when she was Serena's age now. I love Monica, then and now, and always defended her against the vicious insults of couch potatoes who made fun of her weight. There was the same dialogue: the photos off the court where she looked good, the insistence that standards were too high, the same "she's trying.." The truth is, she may very well have been trying, and so may have Serena, injuries and the complexities of life life may be holding them back from the total commitment they had as teenagers... I don't think it's right to blame either one of them. But her lack of fitness held Monica back and it will be even worse for Serena.

Serena still looks like a beautiful lady, but she does not look like a top athlete, and while Monica may have figured out how to be in the top 5-top 10 consistently without very good movement or fitness, Serena has not figured that out, and probably won't, given the differences in her game. If she wants to come back to the top, she's going to have to make a hellish commitment to diet and fitness. If she's hitting every ball out of position like in 06, she's not going to beat any top player, much less the journeywomen like Bammer. She's still got the serve, and the mental toughness, and the experience, and the court sense, but it can only take her so far.

I can't believe some of you think Serena looks fine. She is clearly 10-15 lbs overweight. Especially for a tennis player. These same delusional people said that Serena at the Aussie Open '06 looked good. I mean Serena said she took off the French and Wimby to get fit. So please lets face the facts. Serena needs to get fitter if she wants to do well on tour.

I think she looks better than last year at the AO.

Many times Serena looks a lot heavier in still photos than on tv. I'd wait to make a judgment when I see her on TV. I think that it helps her knee, her stamina and her speed if she trims down.

These pics aren't great, but, her legs look huge again.

She wants to go home and study? Um...

Yeah, what's the studying thing about? Maybe she's talking her religion? Also, I thought her dad was the coach -- so I wonder what her mom has to say that she may not want to hear?

I thought Serena looked better, until I saw the top photo. I saw her live in Carson, CA this past summer, and she definitely had fitness issues.

Has anyone seen her play in this latest event in Australia??? What was her fitness like? What was her speed and movement like?

p.s. Yes, I agree -- that top is baggy -- and the shirt tight. ;)!

p.s.s. The two players I'd like to see do really well this year are Serena (of course) and Jelena Jankovic! Come on girls. Oh, and Andy "Opie" (my pet name for him) Roddick too! James Blake too.

That's the best post I've read in a while-Mishar. Best of luck to Serena getting back in shape-but she's got a long way to go.
