Wow. I have the feeling that she's going to have an impressive comeback this year !!
The fact that she choked a little at the end of the 1st set doesn't mean a lot of things : it was her first match since long. Let's look at the bright side : at 5-4, she found a way to close it out. So it's really good.
Of course, it's Arvidsson, a low-ranked player, but at least Serena didn't disappoint, and that's great ! :)

Time to do the happy dance! I'm really happy she opted for this tourney because it'll help her maintain focus. It sounds like she lost some focus after having such a great start. Nice to see her regroup and re-focus in the second- next time out she'll be that much more focused. The more matches she can get in, the more things will start falling into place.

Thanks to all those who kept me abreast of things in the scoring thread: mrserenawilliams, Frazier-Force, Diva, VSR, Santhuru, Shirgan - and all the rest. Serena made things a little too interesting for us all, but happy to go through it with my Serena-Family.

Honestly? She *looks* so much better than at the US Open.

Eh, can't say that I agree.

While her arms and waist don't appear to have grown any, her legs still look too big. I understand that she has a lot of muscle, but she also has a lot of flab there- and I also understand the whole "bonestructure of an African American," but even hard, rigorous conditioning can train that.

But I'm remaining patient with her. Hell, she won, and...

SHE GOT RID OF THE FRYING PAN RACQUET!

Great job on winning, Serena! :bounce: :bounce: :bounce:

American superstar Serena Williams blew her Swedish opponent off centre court at the Hobart International on Monday night in her first match since last year's US Open.

Williams, 25, said she was rusty, and it showed in the first set of her 6-4 6-0 victory.

The seven-time Grand Slam champion powered her way to a 5-0 lead in the opening set before a courageous Sofia Arvidsson clawed her way back by winning four consecutive games.

Williams closed out the set on serve, and then used some outstanding service returns and missile-like forehands to steamroll the world No.63 in the second set.

Ranked 95th and on the comeback from ankle and knee problems, Williams said her best was yet to come.

"The whole match I didn't play my best," Williams said.

"I'm a little rusty because I haven't played since the US Open.

"I only played four tournaments in 2006, so I think there's a little bit of rust coming out."

Williams wants her serve working better before she heads to Melbourne for the Australian Open next week.

"I just want to work on my serve and be able to serve a little faster by the time I get to Melbourne," she said.

"There is so much more I have to do.

"I have to go home and study and I know my mum is going to tell me some things I don't want to hear but I know I need to hear.

"This is just the start, I'm taking it one match at a time."

Williams is scheduled to play Czech Lucie Safarova, ranked No.41, in the second round on Tuesday.

She is defiantly not fat but I would say more bulky. She just needs to do more weight lifting with lighter weights with high reps and she’ll be toned in no time, but good when never the less. I was surprised she let a 5-0 lead slip it could have been a 6-0, 6-0 win.

Get win Serena. I am not upset with the scoreline at all, because she was able to get her game back on track and win the set. That's why you break early and often... EVERYONE GETS NERVOUS serving out the set, it is only natural given the time off that Serena would have a little trouble. She proved herself solid in the second and what is important is that she won that set and the match without any further hiccups.

Fitness wise, in the two pics posted Serena still looks like she is carrying extra weight. Again, I wasn't surprised given the off-court photos I had seen of her since the USO.

Hey All,

Happy New Tennis Year

I too am glad Serena is back. As long as she serves well and hits penetrating ground strokes w/interest and at an angle at times - then yippee - me thinks - she'll be fine. I noticed at the US Open - she was serving and volleying more - so hopefully - she will incorporate that style of play more into her arsenal.

What are you talking about? I've always said that Serena's best tennis is ahead of her, not behind her.
