Okay. Has anyone wasted as many opportunities as Hingis did here:o Wasted around 10 break points in the second set, more in the third and tons of game points in the last game:( Really frustrating, at least she fought, but again fails to win a tight match. As usual...

Side note to the thread starter, review your definition of an ass-whipping. ;)

Jelena didn't kick anyone's ass. I'm not a big Hingis fan, but Jelena should of have won in 2, and she choked the first time she served for the match in the third.

But I loves Janky anyway!

If she hadn't ruined Martina's momentum, the match could have turned out differently.

Jelena never finishes the match when she's supposed to. Always lengthens the match being the drama queen that she is. This could have been 64 64. But still a good win.
Hingis played pretty well if the stats are any indication. Just not good enough with breakpoints though I know Jelena tends to give away break opportunities by shitty play and then saves most of them by playing great tennis.

Congrats Jelena. Good win.
You continue to display your awesome knowledge of tennis.

1. A three set match where Hingis won 98 points to Jankovic's 102 is not "getting your ass whipped".

2. Hingis can't hang with the power hitters, but can beat the likes of Davenport, Sharapova, Kuznetsova, Mirza, and the list goes on....

3. Jankovic isn't even a power player.

Congrats Jelena. Good win.

Er... the match was very tight. Hingis should have pushed it to a third set tie-breaker... it was so worth it. Again we saw under-handed tactics from JJ (injury time out for a mystery illness straight after she lost the second set) Hingis is older than JJ, cut her a bit of slack, it takes her a little longer to recover.

:/ jelena's not a power-hitter

Yes she is - compared to Hingis she is anyway.

Good scalp JJ... well played.

Man, this is not a good start for Martina. 3-2 so far, but both losses coming to players outside the top ten. That's gonna speak volumes for Martina. If she can't beat the Jankovic's and Safina's of the tour, she aint gonna be staying in the top ten. We'll see what happens in Melbourne. Martina needs to figure something out, some way to deal with these players. Make up a new shot if you have to girl, just find a way. But I love you no matter what!! Constructive Criticism!!

This is what I expected. I'm really proud of Jankovic... I honestly believe she is a contender for the Australian Open title (hey, she ALMOST made it to the US Open final).

I mean, Hingis could have easily had this scoreline against a higher ranked player such as Sharapova or JHH. If you put their name in place of Jelena's it would seem just as plausible. So don't count Jankovic out! I expect her to do well in this tournament.

As for Hingis... get your game in gear. These are not favorable results before the Open.

no

if u compare hingis to most current players in the same way then they are power hitters

No. Hingis plays seemingly solid groundstrokes against those outside the top 20... I mean, if they can't unbalance her with power, they're not going to win. JJ is 100% a power player. But that doesn't take away from the fact that she's good at the tactics game. She's def not an all court player... can't volley to save her own life.

I'm personally not concerned for Martina going into the Australian Open. Yes she lost two matches in a row, but Safina and Jankovic are really on top of their game right now and Martina looks just a bit flat. She'll come back strong, she has done so many many times.

she's definitely not a 100% a power player.. she does have some power, but not a shit load. she usually doesnt have tons of winners and unforced errors in a match, and she's not always blasting the ball. i agree that shes not an all court player, but she plays the court a lot more and better than most of the current players. jj wins matches because she covers the ball well and has consistent shots.

I'm upset that Hingis lost, but it's not like Jelena and Safina are slumping. It looks like they are playing close to their best, so I'm not worried. She can do well, in Melbourne, but hopefully she gets a good draw

K something is seriously wrong with Marti. I haven't seen the match with JJ yet but from the sounds of it, she's having major trouble with game/break points. It's really not like Marti... Safina played great tennis during these but she's gotta strike first on these important points!

Work it out before next week girl!

Well done JJ!

Jan 8th, 2007, 05:03 AM
This loss isn't a big negative for Hingis as it was high quality match played in very windy conditions.

Martina made too many errors in the last game - would have been interesting if she took advantage of some of those game points because Jankovic appeared to be fading and she has a bit of a tendency for choking.

Hingis would have got by any other unseeded player i suspect.

what i meant by jelena not being a power-hitter was she doesnt totally abuse the ball like a wild woman or a tank like a lot of the real power hitters... pierce, davenport, sharapova, serena, venus, etc. and by calling her a power-hitter alone greatly limits the accuracy of the description of the type of player she is.
she hits the ball with a lot of consistency and often does not hit a lot of winners. she uses angles a lot better than the average woman in the top 100 as well.

she definitely has a lot of power, but if you compare it to a lot of the top 100, its by no means, from a power stand point, anything special.

however, to make a concession, it is possible that she played this match with a substantial amount more poower than what i have seen her produce, considering it is a new season and could be playing differently.

Another unauspicious loss for Hingis. The sophomore year, which is what this is for Hingis, is always the most difficult. Opponents now have her measure.

Having said that, I do actually feel that Gold Coast and Sydney was too much tennis to begin the year anyway, so the loss may actually have a silver lining.

This comment is ridiculous, these two players that Hingis has lost to, has beaten a lot more top ten players beside Martina herself in the last 12 months´s and they are just ranked 11 and 12 respectively .
Yeah is a bit worry some for Martina to lose these kind of matches, but if you tell me that she is losing in straight sets to out of the top 30 players, then that is another story.

Hingis had the toughest oponnent for the first round for this event (for a seeded player), just like she had last year when she was unseeded.

People forget this girl beat Serena, Venus, Kuznetsova, Vaidisova, Petrova, Ivanovic recently. Almost beat Henin at the the Usopen..

Just like her lost to Safina, Hingis loses to a younger rising oponnent just ranked a few spots below her, i don´t think its too much of shame for Martina to lose these matches.

Once again her serve and forehand let her down... that´s the biggest concern.

This is the first time Hingis plays Jelena, so i don´t see her how she has her measured now
After such difficult last two matches against these players, i think it´s definetly better for Martina to lose in Sydney this early.
Still i don´t see her getting further than the Quarterfinals at the Australian Open.

I am starting to see what Hingis critics are saying about her. I mean she obviously has problems with the more powerful players. And the thing is Safina and Jankovic aren't even top 10. Yet Hingis is losing to them as well. Late last year Hingis also lost to Sania Mirza and I don't think she's even in the top 50.

Best thing to happen to Hingis. She's not a teenager anymore. Play singles and doubles in Hopman or Gold Coast and rest a week for AO.

Again Hingis needs to step it up.
She's not opening up the court enough.
She's gotta work on that inside-out forehand.

I don't think Martina will be too hard on herself over the loss because Jelena Jankovic is a very in-form player right now who very well could have beaten anybody. Good luck to both at the Australian, though.

no

if u compare hingis to most current players in the same way then they are power hitters

JJ is by far bigger "power hitter" then Martina.

It's obvious that you haven't watched JJ play...

She plays with power, but she is consistant! But she can't be listed as "power hitter"...

This is the first time Hingis plays Jelena, so i don´t see her how she has her measured now
After such difficult last two matches against these players, i think it´s definetly better for Martina to lose in Sydney this early.
Still i don´t see her getting further than the Quarterfinals at the Australian Open.

Hehe. You should be Martina's PR man!

She could be hovering just inside the top 100, and you'd be putting a positive slant on that. You never outline where exactly she should be in your own estimation, so you are comfortably able to do that. Of course, Martina has never been one for dishonesty. I can just imagine you striving to present her in a positive light only for her to turn round and tell it how it is.

The fact is, it's looking more and more like I'm right and you're wrong. One should never say "I told you so", but, well...I told you so!

If I'm ever clearly wrong on any of my predictions, I will hold my hands up and say so, so long as it's not based on euphoria over one result. I actually think it would be good for women's tennis if little Marti won another slam, or posed a real threat to the top players. But I don't think it looks like that's going to happen, do you?

:)

Hingis will be out of the top ten very soon, and I mean very soon. She just can't compete with the top twenty anymore...Hate to say it, because I love her and her game, but she just can't compete...

I does not look like anytime soon, but still, unless Martina shows up with a better serve and a more agressive attitude, she will keep losing these matches. She needs more spin action in her forehand, like it was a year ago at the Australian Open, she was even hitting some great inside out forehands last year, and she is not these last few months, she is hitting a flatter ball, and we know that in a toe to toe power to power contest Martina does not have the strenght to survive a hard hitting battle.

She needs to settle down and really think that the only way to produce big wins these days is to be agressive, which does not necesarily means that she must hit the hell out of the ball everytime.

The difference between you and me is that i feel Martina has the tools to play a more agressive game, whereareas you give her no chances and think she does not have what it takes to.

Once again had she lost in two straight sets these last two matches, i would say yes, right now Martina is struggling to "compete", but losing 7-5 in the third set and 6-3 in the third to the 11 and 12th ranked players in the world does not mean she can´t compete .
But i agree she may leave the top ten after Tokio finishes..

Martina! Oh well. Good Luck at AO!

Those are my sentiments as well.

I too agree with Seb she wasted so many chances again, even against Safina she had more than just a few break opportunities and did not capitalize. Yes there were some rallies as well where she had no control over them, too good from her opponents at that. However, she could have made more for her cause had she capitalized on her break opportunities. I guess it's still a working process, getting match tough again, closing out matches too has been an Issue she still has to solve, she's had many three set matches were she even got to match point or close to match point and could not close the deal. For example, against Pennetta at gold coast.

She still needs to get her stamina up to par with that of the top 15 players and really work on her general fitness, not just looking fit. She has improved a bit on this since '06, she too should be careful with the issue of being low on Iron as she was for most of the latter parts of the '06 season. I guess being away for 3+ players really took a lot from her on the fitness department; besides she never was big on the idea of going to the gym.

So yeah good luck for the aussie open and there's still a lot of work ahead for Hingis if she wants to keep up with the competition of the top 15 players.

Again, I didn´t like what Jelena said "I had better wins than this..." but obviously she is more determined than Martina at the moment and thats why Martina is shaking so much in the key points, lots of break points wasted... Anyway, i keep believing she will have a very good year.

FFS Martina, Convert your chances you have to break and be confident in your game ! And also this is not the first time she loses a 3 set match against a teenager : Where's your pride Martina ? Hopefully I didn't watch the match : no caption but this give me no good feelings for the AO. :fiery: :help:

That's about as tough of a frst draw you can get, and a great battle between two very talented girls. Jankovic keeps her impressive form rolling in the new year, and this extra break might benefit Martina.

I hope both do great at the AO.

An awesome match and one of the best ive seen in a long while.. Hingis had problem with her forehand and jankovic struggled little with consistency in the 2nd set.. but both played awesome points and had incredible rallys..
