I went for the first 3 days of the exhibition, had to skip the last day even though I had tickets :(

Opening Ceremony

All the players stood in a line and the organizer was blabbing on and on. A ballboy fainted in the background, and laid there on the ground. Svetlana and Maria, who were side by side, were talking to each other and pointing out about the ballboy :p . Kim, who was on the other side of Maria, was too busy making small talk with some organizer man to notice. When she finally noticed the ballboy, she then called out to Maria to look at the ballboy, which of course Maria already knew about, and Maria was nodding along, giving a “Yeah Kim, we were already talking about it” look, which was quite funny to see

Kim vs Jie

Kim’s serve was bad the whole match. She lost serve twice in the first set, but Jie didn’t sustain a high level of intensity enough to cope with her. Jie started off the second set pretty strongly, with some great shots, but Kim soon got back into gear and romped through the remaining games. But Kim’s numerous double faults proved to be a continuing point in her next few matches :o . She said her serve worked well during practice, but it was definitely not the case so during the match. Jie was the crowd favorite, so I looked quite silly at times being the only one clapping when Kim wins a point

Jie/Zi vs Elena/Caroline

Elena and Caroline came out looking like complete twins, with long blonde braided hair and roughly the same height. Even though Jie and Zi were obviously the favorites, Elena and Caroline started off pretty well, breaking Jie and Zi first, but allowed themselves to get broken back and soon lost momentum. I thought Caroline gave a very good account of herself during the match, definitely the better partner of her team and coming up with some great shots every now and then :) . Elena’s much maligned serve really didn’t look that weak from courtside ;) . Elena and Caroline interacted quite well, lots of smiles, and Caroline herself has a really great smile, prompting the people beside me to comment that she is prettier than Sharapova :p . The Elena/Caroline team hit a ball that landed right into my hands. I wanted to keep the ball, but the ballboy came to my side and stared at me. I felt bad so I threw the ball back to him.

Svetlana vs Patty

I only caught the first set and the first 3 games of the second set, so what I saw was pretty much the time when Patty didn’t play well. She was practically non-existent during the first set :tape: , and just looked like she didn’t want to be there. She slightly picked up in the 2nd set, but I left before I saw how much she’d improved.

Maria vs Zi

This was expected to be an extremely lop-sided match, but it definitely wasn’t. Zi played pretty solidly throughout, and was especially amazing during the 2nd half of the first set, where she did very well in making up a two-break deficit against Maria to push the score to 5-5. Her serve was not a liability, and her shots left the crowd oohing and aahing at times :yeah: . If she had been more consistent in the beginning of both sets, the score might be even closer. I kept looking over to Yuri Sharapov to see if there was any interaction between him and Maria, but there were none except some screams of encouragement:lol:

Kim/Svetlana vs Maria/Patty

The match started off and continued to be played in very good spirits. Both four players were making friendly banter with one another throughout the match :) . Even the crowd got involved with the appearance of the world’s most horrible umpire:o . In the first set, he called the wrong score three times in a close sequence. The first time, he was corrected by Maria, who joked by saying “I need a game!” after her serve was called 15-40 instead of 30-30  . The umpire refused to listen to her, and called 15-40 again in a manner that sounded like “I’m right” , until the crowd started shouting 30-30, before he finally corrected his mistake. The second time, he called the score 3-1 instead of 2-2, and was corrected by Kim and the crowd again. The third time, immediately after the 2nd mistake, the crowd started booing him very loudly. After he finally called the correct score the next time, the crowd sarcastically gave him a huge loud cheer and applause, with Kim following suit, clapping with her racquet and laughing very hard:lol: .

Maria and Patty surprisingly interacted very well during the match, chatting, laughing and patting each other on the back. During one point in the match when Patty’s serve kept deserting her, Patty was chiding herself and saying “Can’t pay a million bucks”:o . Team FILA was expectedly having a lot of fun, a lot of laughs and smiles, and clearly enjoying themselves a lot, and they really lifted each other up on their partners’ serves, although Svetlana seemed to tire out a bit towards the end of the match.

Nicole vs Zi

Nicole actually started off the match pretty positively, smiling after even lost points or unforced errors, and looking over at her box with a grin :) . But huge amount of unforced errors increased as the match continued on. Zi was solid throughout the match, and came up with brilliant shots and impressive serving. Nicole seemed to lose fight and it was clear who the winner would be. Zi really deserved this win with her great performances in both her singles matches. Nicole’s outfit looks very nice from afar, but looking clearly, the material used is extremely weird, somewhat like the material used for astronaut suits, or similar to something Iroda Tulyaganova wore last year :tape: . Nicole also kept tugging at her shirt and shorts inside her skirt after practically every point, which was quite unsightly.

Kim vs Patty

Kim’s serve was ATROCIOUS. It got so bad I was practically cringing after every missed first serve (which was very often):o . Throughout her three matches, it was very obvious Kim was very fustrated with her serve, but it never improved. But other than the horrendous serving, when the match got past the serves, it was actually a very good match, with both Kim and Patty hitting very beautiful shots most of the time  and making the match very nice to watch. The crowd was really enjoying this and giving huge applauses to each great shot hit.

now to my players' experiences:

Maria Sharapova

Didn’t see her at autograph sessions. Saw her on the practise courts after her win against Elena (not practicing, just walking on the court with her entourage). A huge crowd gathered outside waiting for her to come out. She came out and didn’t sign a single autograph before making her way straight into the physio room.

Svetlana Kuznetsova

Got her autograph twice, both during autograph sessions. So didn’t really bother her for more  even when she walked past me or when I saw her on the practice courts (once practicing, the other time playing soccer). But seemed a very lovely girl :)

Kim Clijsters

REALLY NICE. No wonder I’ve been a fan of her for 6 and a half years:D . Got her autographs twice already during autograph sessions, but wanted to get a photo taken. So we (me and wateva) missed the Maria/Elena match to stake out the walkway between the practice court, physio room and media center. Kim with her dad walked really quickly into the barricaded media center. We called out to her across the barricade, and she didn’t hear us at first. But Daddy Clijsters heard us, and signaled to Kim to come over and take a photo with us:bounce: . My camera failed, so I was only able to get a photo for wateva with Kim.

The second time, Kim was walking out of the media center herself, and I called out to her “Kim can I take a photo with you” and she was like “Sure” and so I finally got my photo taken (woohoo!:bounce: ) and resulted in the other people crowding around her before she could get into the physio room. She then had a practise session with Caroline Maes and again when she came out, she was inundated with autograph and photo requests, and I got my third Kim autograph. She granted them all before going off, really lovely. :D

Elena Dementieva

Got her autograph during the autograph session. The security guards didn’t allow people to take photos with the players, but we got Elena to look in the direction of the camera and she was very smiley and patient and allowed us to get our photographs taken with her before moving on to sign the next autograph :D . But the few times I saw mummy Vera, she looked quite fierce

Patty Schnyder

A hardworking player, saw her quite a few times on the practice courts. Granted all requests after her practices, and also patiently waited for me to take a photo of her and wateva. :)

Nicole Vaidisova

Left pretty soon during her autograph session. The first two times she walked past us (there weren’t anyone else around), we called out to her but she didn’t respond. So the next two times she walked past us, we basically just gave up and ignored her :o . Didn’t sign for anyone else either

Zheng Jie

The first time we saw her, we took photos with her individually. She was very patient and waited for wateva’s camera to load, even talking to us “电池没电啦?” but still waited till the camera was ready. The second time we met her, she also granted us our autograph requests. The third time during the same day when we went for her autograph session (seriously she must be so sick of seeing us:o ), she smiled at everyone before signing their autographs. Prettier in person :)

Yan Zi

Passed by us the first time when she was heading for her press conference, and signed for both of us, and took photos with the other people. The second time, we noticed her too late and couldn’t get photos taken

Caroline Wozniacki

Saw her coming, and went up to her to get an autograph, signed for us and joked with us if we also wanted the autograph of her hitting partner, a Hong Kong guy called David  . It was not until people saw us going up to her did they also then go up to her for photos and autographs (They weren’t sure who she was). While she was hitting, someone even asked wateva who that girl was, so that he could also get an autograph :o

since janice wasn't there on the finals day, i'll fill in the missing pieces.

i arrived late for the final (damn the stupid slow cable car) and reached there at 4-3 kim, on serve. after i settled down, kim immediately won the next 2 games to claim the first set! (i must be kim's lucky charm).
the second set started off well for kim as she broke maria immediately for a 1-0 lead. she held on to her serve to consolidate the break to go up 2-0. however, kim's service was still shaky as she struggled to hold her service games. kim had several break pt opportunities to go up a double break but wasted them all. :o alas, the inevitable came as kim double faulted to give the break back to maria... :o the games went according to serve with some high quality tennis. maria had a set point at 4*-5 or 5*-6 (can't remember properly... was too nervous) but kim fought well despite her serve being extremely off. kim forced the tiebreak and got a mini-break immediately to go up 1-0. however, kim immediately gifted it back plus a bonus to go down a mini-break to maria. maria seized the opportunity to go up 4-1. for the next few points, i was too nervous to remember the exact score. but kim got the tiebreak back on level terms. finally, kim got the crucial breakthrough to have her first match point at 6*-5. guess what? kim double faulted. :o what's worse is she double faulted twice to gift maria a set point. :o kim was lucky that maria committed an error on her set point. kim got another minibreak to have another chance at ending the match. the match point was unbelievable as both players were scrambling around the court. maria was trying to hit winners while kim defended very well. finally, maria ran out of energy when she was pulled wide into her forehand side as kim squeezed a crosscourt backhand winner to clinch the title. maria had some pretty nice things to say about kim in her acceptance speech. :) as for kim, she was her usual self, giggly and thanking everyone for their support for her in the past few days. more to come tomorrow! :)

sorry... was busy with school these days...
anyway, the prize ceremony was really sweet from kim and it was announced then that sveta has withdrawn due to her injury. masha basically just went back to her chair after the presentation, signed about 10 autographs and left the courts in a hurry. kim paraded around the court with her trophy and sgined every request for an autograph. even those at the opposite side of the court. what a great girl! :)

after that match, i went to the back of the stadium trying to catch a last chance at a maria autograph. after waiting for 15 minutes, she eventually appeared from the physio room. she just stood there, waited for the security to clear the path for her and waltzed off. not a single autograph. i was really quite disappointed w her attitude but i guess she has the power to do so... anyway, i lingered there a few more minutes and the crowd had dispersed. then, i saw kim's father walk past. i seized the opportunity and took a photo as he was walking past. he looked surprised and exclaimed something like "up!" and smiled v broadly. i guess i was the only one who recognised him. :o anyway, i waved hi to him as he walked away with a smile. :)

i went back to the stadium after the first set between yan and caroline. it was already 6-3 in caro's favour. the second set was pretty tight as caro threatened to break yan several times but yan fought off those pts brilliantly. finally, at the crucial tenth game when caro was serving to stay in the set, yan broke her for the second set.
yan started off the third set brightly by breaking caro early in the set. but some unfortunate errors gave caro back the break. finally, yan got broken again and caro promptly served out the match. that match was pretty intense with yan switching between offense and defense. sometimes yan would scramble around the court until caro made an error. other times, yan would produce brilliant winners of her own. i'm impressed by how caro managed to ignore the partisan crowd who were even cheering ofr caro's errors. :o anyway, i think caro would be the one to look out for in the next few years. the prize presentation was basically caro thanking the crowd for their support and she said that she hopes to play more matches with yan in the future. yan said in chinese that she's v happy with the support she has received from the hk pple and she's very honoured to be playing there.

wateva
Jan 9th, 2007, 02:36 PM
the doubles was held at about 8 at night and the temperature was very cold. the chinese pair played in their long pants while kim and caro warmed up with their sweaters on. when the match was about to started, caro removed her sweater and the crowd started to whistle at caro. caro looked at kim like, "what did i do?" anyway, the chinese pair were alread facing break pts in the first game but they fought well to save them. after the first game, kim also removed her sweater to reveal a black shirt. then, zheng's serve was broken as she made some uncharacteristic errors to gift them a break. it was 4-1. zheng got broken again later in that match and was trailing by a huge gap. however, the chinese pair managed to get back one of the breaks to make it a tighter contest. eventually, kim held her serve to served out the match. the match was very entertaining but zheng was making too many errors. kim was very agile at the net and it just shows you why she was number 1 in doubles too. the prize presentation was held and there was a reward for the most amount of aces served. the winner was maria sharapova with 12 aces. but surprise, she's not there to received the prize. the remaining spectators squeezed to the front to catch a final glimpse of kim in hong kong. after the ceremony, kim apologised to those autograph seekers. she said, "sorry i can't. i have to fly."
what a sweet girl. the organisers gave her a special farewell as kim walked off the court amidst a standing ovation and thundering applause. :)
it was really a very nice week to see how the players hit in real life and how they treat their fans. i'm very surprised by the friendliness of patty. she patiently signed for all fans after her match with sveta even though it was already past 12 midnight. after her practice session, she signed all requests as well and placed her hand on my shoulder in my photo with her. what a nice girl! :)
and zheng jie was very patient, smiling always and waited patiently for my camera to load. elena was very accomodating, looking at the cameras and smiling even though photos were not allowed at the booth. she's very beautiful in real life! :hearts:
as for nicole, she was very sweet in the autograph booth as well. she smiled a lot and took photos when it wasn't allowed. however, after her losses, she looked pretty upset and ignored me when i asked for her autograph. well, i guess you won't be too happy after committing tons of errors in your match. :o
sveta was very funny on court. she was very animated and there was once she mishit a backhand and it landed in for a winner. she shrugged her shoulders at patty and kissed her racquet. another time, sveta tried to overpower patty by just smakcing the ball at patty. but patty got everything back. sveta eventually made an error and screamed as kneeled down at the court.
