both martina & jelena are in good form at the moment but I would have to go for jelena to win in 3 tough sets.

Last year Hingis drew Henin-Hardenne in the first round. Good to see that all her hard work last year has helped her to get easier draws! :help:

Sydneys got an awesome draw this yr.. Hingis should win this but it could b a struggle and it wont get any easier as the rounds move on...

If Martina goes far in Sydney she will be playing with fire in Melbourne by potentially wearing herself out. Maybe its best to lose early in Sydney.

Wow, quite unlucky that two of the current in-form players have to play each other right off the bat.

Wow, quite unlucky that two of the current in-form players have to play each other right off the bat.

Yeah this is really...:fiery:

I AM excited that these 2 will play and I will be rootng for Marti, though I love Jelena too!!! :hearts:

Still, if current form holds I think Martina could be looking at another tough 3-set loss!

wish I could watch this match!

I say Jankovic in 2... shouldn't have much trouble breaking Martina's serve.

Hingie
Jan 6th, 2007, 06:30 AM
I haven't seen much of Jankovic's play, but based on Gold Coast form, if she does win, she's going to have to play out of her skin.

Jan 6th, 2007, 06:32 AM
Martina in three. But of course I am rooting for Janky.

 Hingis is soo going to get her ass kicked by Jankovic in straight sets. Jankovic is firing at the moment.

In all likelihood it can be the case. Jankovic's backhand is even better than Safinas and she's one of the best movers. In a way this is good for Hingis to struggle and maybe now she really takes seriously improving her serve or at least really working to improve it.

I want Martina to CRUSH Jelena.

Jan 6th, 2007, 07:49 AM
Jelena is on the run. I think, she can beat Martina in three sets.
But I don´t know, if this would be so good for her.
If she goes far in Sydney, she could be tired at the Australian Open.

go hingis
Jan 6th, 2007, 07:57 AM
wow, what a first round match. I hope Martina wins it in two knowing Jelena's form and being prepared. I hope the schedule suits me so I can go and watch it.

Not as tough as a first round draw against Justine, but a toughy none the less. I reckon martina should come through this in 3, 4-6 7-5 6-2

What a tough draw for both players!

Jankovic is bound to be tired after her week Auckland and that maraton final.

But she will be high on confidence after finally winning her second title.

Well Martina also played tough final match in final of Gold Coast... Right?
She played 5-7 third set against Safina...

So both will be tired... :(

Well Martina also played tough final match in final of Gold Coast... Right?
She played 5-7 third set against Safina...

So both will be tired... :(

The good news for both players is that neither 1 should be that tired, since they both won their semi's by Withdrawals! I know Martina was still pretty fresh, even at the end of the match w/ Dinara....

I think this should be a very good match, I have been waitng for it now for a year and I hope it is televised!

BTW, The only other time I want to see Martina/Jelena in the 1ST RD is at the YEC!!!

jegood
Jan 6th, 2007, 09:08 PM
What, they'll meet in the 1R! Bad news! But I hope Jeca will win, she has to be concentrated from the beginning till the end of the match. If she allows herself to be "nervous", well, we saw what happened against Justine. But- 2 words-go Jecooooooooooooooooooooooooo:bounce:

Jan 6th, 2007, 09:09 PM
I think Hingis will win. Dinara hits a lot harder than Jankovic, and that's how you beat Hingis, with power.

Wayn77
Jan 6th, 2007, 09:11 PM
... also keeping the rallies short with Hingis by hitting lots of stunning winners...

Guys, at this moment i cant see Martina beating Jelena :shrug:It's not a stretch for Hingis to win. She has a much more all court game.
Unless Jankovic can attack the Hingis serve, Martina will cruise.

MatchpointPRT
Jan 6th, 2007, 09:31 PM
Too bad! The tournament will lose one of the best players in the draw in the 1st round... I hope Martina wins, but i think Jankovic has great chances of winning, she has been playing very very well and must be confident after her title in auckland.

Go Martina:)

Wayn77
Jan 6th, 2007, 09:40 PM
I tipped Jelena.

Hingis is very clever and very smart. It will be interesting to see how Jeka copes if she finds herself behind.

There's plenty of good players in this draw without Hingis and Jankovic.
They miss Justine.

Justine will be missed BUT...

I am sure the tournament would love Martina to stick around as long as possible and the fact that she could lose the 1st rd AGAIN with another terrible draw is

She is a 3X champ after all!

hingisGOAT
Jan 6th, 2007, 09:57 PM
i don't know. jankovic has impressed me with her huge backhand and good movement. that being said, if hingis is playing within herself, she should win in two tough sets. either way i think this match is great preparation for melbourne

goldenlox
Jan 6th, 2007, 10:03 PM
I don't know if it's great preparation. The loser is going to have a week off.

Go Hingis!
 Can't believe I said that.

The Dawntreader
Jan 6th, 2007, 10:11 PM
Hmmm........very hard to call. Both kinda play similar games. both look to manouvre their opponents around the court without nessecarily going for the early winner. jankovic plays with a bit more power and that huge backhand could cause Hingis problems, Hingis's sometimes loopier forehand could allow Jelena to go for the backhand in Martina's forehand corner. Jelena also moves just that bit better than hingis and could frustrate Hingis and make her play one more ball.

Hingis though must bring Jelena in i feel. Jelena is a competent volleyer, but she's not a strong volleyer. Hingis has one of the best passing shot in the game( off that backhand side), so i think for hingis to win, she has to mix it up more and target the weaker forehand side of Jelena's. It can break down in lengthened rallies.

I would say maybe Hingis in 3 sets, but then again a Jankovic win wouldnt suprise me. Its going to be a great match anyway:)

Martina will make Jankovic cry. A golden set looms for the beautiful Swiss Miss.

She is a 3X champ after all! They miss Justine because she and Kim are the only players they can rely on to go deep in this kind of draw.
Amelie doesn't usually do well in preps before majors, and Nadia and Sveta aren't locks to go deep.

LUIS9
Jan 7th, 2007, 06:45 AM
I think Jelena will win this one

I know Hingis form does not seem very convincing. Her fitness has improved but she is still lacking the much needed explosiveness in her serve, groundies and movement to compete with today's brand of players sadly enough.:sad:

cakiteror
Jan 7th, 2007, 08:42 AM
dont doubt jelenas power!last year she beat extremely powerful players, and she did that by not just placing the ball!she can hit pretty hard, dont doubt it!
so i say jj in 3!
