Gold Coast R1: (WC) Sophie Ferguson AUS def [8] Ai Sugiyama JPN 76 64

Early round huge upset!

Looks like Ai having trouble with her serve; 11 DFs and first serve % at 55%.

All other stats quite close; must have been a tough match for both.

Ai isn't in a rhythm yet, hopefully she gets a match win sometime in Australia this year!!!!! But she clearly beat herself here, she'll get it together. Not worried!

Pff...

It's OK. Ai usually loses her first 30 matches of the year and then starts making random Tier I finals.

In 2006 Ai played 1 final, reached another semis (Tier II), reached another 3 QF (including Miami), defeated Hingis to reach 4th round in Wimbledon.

That certainly justifies her ranking.

Awesome result for Sophie!! Perhaps a little more credit from some posters is needed.

Aussie WC's are usually fairly dangerous this time of year for a seasoned player in the first match after a break.

Sophie took Maggie Maleeva and Petrova to 3 sets remember.;)

I disagree, she just had extremely much luck in her draws
when reaching the semis at Doha, she beat Sfar, Schruff and a hopeless Myskina
when reaching the quarters at Miami, she beat Schruff and the slumping Likhovtseva and Arvidsson
she lost to Beltrame in Wimbledon, shows how much her win over Hingis was worth
and the final at a Tier IV - please,

I dont see that these achievements justify her ranking!
but that would be a discussion about the ranking system, so its pointless

64 06 06 actually...still technically 3 sets though...it's called a learning curve.;)

Slumping Myskina? She had just reached semis at Tier I Tokyo one month earlier losing 64 in the third against eventual winner Dementieva...

Whatever...and then you forgot to mention a win over Vaidosova. I guess that means nothing to you as well. And come on, is not like she has finished top 10, being ranked #26 I find it very reasonable.

OMG

Players don't have a say in how their draws pan out. They advance by beating whoever's across the net, and regardless of the opponent's quality, it still takes a lot of gut to win a match - especially if the player's just come off a long slump. Luck has little to do with the outcome. It's ultimately up to the players to make something out of what they've got.

she lost to Beltrame in Wimbledon, shows how much her win over Hingis was worth and the final at a Tier IV - please,

Not everyone's form is consistent. The Sugiyama at Wimbledon round 3 was obviously different to the Sugiyama round 4.

Don't go trashing something she worked hard to gain just because you have something against her.

I dont see that these achievements justify her ranking! but that would be a discussion about the ranking system, so its pointless

She played the matches and won more points than those ranked below her. Therefore, she deserves her ranking - it's that simple. And since you admit the discussion is pointless, why bring it up in the first place? :tape:

Besides early in the season, Sugiyama has always been a model of consistency. That's why she is ranked where she is, and how she got into the top 10 a few years ago.

Anyway, huge win for Ferguson, I wonder if she is one to watch.

Good on Sophie - I've often thought she'd be able to break through and do something on the main tour. She has a nice game and a fantastic coach, but she always plays decently in Australia, then you never hear about her again.

But just checking the rankings, it appears she's improved every year and is now at her career best. So maybe she's just a slightly late bloomer like Sam and Alicia
