View Full Version : Who Will Win: Nadia Petrova vs. Alicia Molik H

So Disrespectful

What a fantastic Hopman Cup opener! If both players are at their best it should be a pretty even contest. Alicia has had match play from the WC playoff and we know she's in good physical shape, so Nadia should be prepared for a very good match.

So exciting! :bounce:

I'm hoping Molik in 3, but realistically Nadia will triumph...

It will be a good test though to see where Molik's game is at.

I think this is going to be a great start to the season for Molik... but Nadia has been training early, so it's a coin toss for me. I'll go with Molik in 3.

I don't know how well Alicia is playing now. She had a big game in late 2004, early 2005.
I have high expectations for Nadia in 2007.

In Nadia's last 4 tournaments, her only loss to a non-top 7 player was Anna C, who is #13 now. And Nadia was exhausted from 2 straight full weeks.

But it's a new year, you never know.

i would say molik has a slight chance, as it is the first match of the season, but petrova is expericienced enough to go straight into the new season playing well.
so i reckon petrova 7-5, 6-2

The cup, which begins today in Perth with Australia's Mark Philippoussis and Alicia Molik playing highly rated Russian pair Dmitry Tursinov and Nadia Petrova, has traditionally proved a strong form line for the year's first grand slam.
Several Hopman Cup players have used the mixed-team competition as a building block to winning the Australian Open, including 1989 champion Steffi Graf, who began her preparation at the inaugural Hopman Cup won by Helena Sukova and Miloslav Mecir of Czechoslovakia.
While the field this time lacks a player with the profile of Graf, it is still extremely strong, with several rising male and female stars in Perth for the week.
Petrova, No.6 in the world, is the highest-ranked woman, while top-line players Tommy Robredo (world No.7), Mario Ancic (No.9) and Tomas Berdych (No.13) add class on the men's side.
Tournament director Paul McNamee says the Hopman Cup players have claims for the Open.
"It goes back to when (Monica) Seles came as a complete unknown as a 16 year old in 1991, won here and then went on to win the Open," McNamee said.
"It is unashamedly a preparation for the Australian Open."
The beauty of the exhibition is the fact that it gives the players, coming off a minimum month's break from competitive play, at least three matches against highly ranked opponents to find form, rather than running the risk of being knocked out early in a tour event.

I really hope SopCast plays it. Does anyone else know about it? If you don't have the Tennis Channel/Eurosport, it's like an online Asian sports player. Hopefully they cover tennis not in Asia/featuring Asian players. :/
