View Full Version : Tournaments Won not dropping a Set

I was thinking about players who have won WTA tournaments without losing a single set - which is a great feat.

I remember Davenport won the US Open once without losing a set - and Maria Sharapova came close to equalling that this year.

US Open Sep 10 2006
1 M Sharapova(3) - M Krajicek..... 6-3 6-0
2 M Sharapova(3) - E Loit ..........6-0 6-1
3 M Sharapova(3) - E Likhovtseva(32) ....6-3 6-2
4 M Sharapova(3) - N Li(24) ............. 6-4 6-2
QF M Sharapova(3) - T Golovin(27) .....7-6(4) 7-6(0)
SF M Sharapova(3) - A Mauresmo(1) ....6-0 4-6 6-0 :o
F M Sharapova(3) - J Henin-Hardenne(2).... 6-4 6-4

Checking Maria's stats, she has won three tournaments without a set loss this year

Linz Carpet Tier II Oct 29 2006
F Sharapova(1) - Nadia Petrova(2) ...... 7-5 6-2
SF Sharapova(1) - Patty Schnyder(3) ..... 7-5 7-5

SF M Sharapova(3) - M Hingis(19) .......6-3 6-3
F M Sharapova(3) - E Dementieva(4).... 6-1 6-2

Before that Maria won a lower Tier title in straight sets in 2004

Lindsay Davenport won all three of her slams in straight sets.

I think Venus Williams didn't lose more than 4 games per set in winning the US Open in 2001.

Some impressive stats here.

Particularly with regard to players having dominating runs like Venus, Seles, and Graf

So, who's had the most? just by looking quickly, looks like Davenport, Graf, and Seles has had the most straight set win events.

It's more likely to be Navratilova or Evert as they both won 155+ singles titles and really dominated the tour in their primes. My guess would be Evert; she was famous for not only winning but also humiliating her opponent in the process by conceding as few games as possible.

Martinez's hamburg 95 :worship: 7 games in 4 matches ! Hingis losing 1 set and Maleeva not dropping a game if I remember correctly ;)

which makes me wonder abt the fewer amount of games lost en route to a title by a player ? (with 4 matches/ 5 matches/ 6 or 7 ) ??
