Serena Williams
-Beating Sharapova at 05' Australian Open. I watch that match over and over I'm still amazed with the way she played
-Beating Hingis at 99' US Open, first GS for Rena

Justine Henin-Hardenne
-Beating Serena at 03' Roland Garros. No questions asked.

Venus Williams
-Beating Davenport at 05' Wimbledon. Pretty obvious choice.

Kim Clijsters
-Beating Venus (was down 6-4, 4-2, Venus was playing good tennis looked like she'd win) and then Sharapova (Masha came back to win 2nd set) consecutively at 05' US Open. Both matches weren't the highest quality but she ended up winning the title and being the hottest player that summer.

Maria Kirilenko
-Beating Groenefeld to win the China Open in 2005.
-Choosing to sign with Stella McCartney for 2006! Love those dresses! :lick:  :hearts:

Yeah I agree about Venus beating Sharapova too but I tend to like the Davenport match more.

I forgot Dementieva!!! For me it was the US Open match with Jennifer. Match was pretty rocky but great quality in rallies. I also tend to watch the matches when she beat Mauresmo in RG (She had a little squeal at the end, very cute) and again at the US Open in 04!!! :worship:

Myskina: in terms of match's quality - YEC-2004 vs Davenport 76 64; in terms of importance - RG-2004 SF vs Capriati 62 62

Dementieva: tied between Amelia Island-2003 vs Henin and Davenport. But since Davenport's match was the final I would choose this one.

Mauresmo: Wimbledon final vs Henin

Clijsters: USO-05 QF vs Venus

Davenport: I do not know, really. Maybe Wimbledon-99 vs Graf...

Lena D. and Dinara Safina winning the Fed Cup for Russia.

No, I didn't see any of it. But I heard the interview after. Elena was so elated, I don't think I've ever heard more sheer joy in the voice of an athlete. Given her famous "I finally have my trophy"* statement and her fierce patriotism, I suspect Elena would certainly consider this a huge, if not the hugest win in her career.

*(At which point I actually cried tears of joy--the only nonsoccer sports event I've ever done that for).

For importance it was beating Lena D. to win the French Open.

But I'd say Nastya's best win was over Davenport in the semis at Moscow in 2004. Before that she had never beaten Davenport and was usually annihilated in their matches.

Martina Hingis is my favourite, and I would say the best win of hers was either:

vs Serena Williams, Australian Open QF 01 (6-2 3-6 8-6) where she was down two breaks in the third, and just kept her cool, kept playing and frustrated Serena. The final point was just beautiful.

vs Steffi Graf, Rome QF 96 (6-2 2-6 6-3) - a totally unexpected upset of the dominant player of the previous decade byt the 15 year old Martina. Her first of only two wins over the legend.

vs Lindsay Davenport. Zurich F 01 (6-4 4-6 7-5) - probably the best match between two of the best players ever. Hingis finally wins her home tournament, against a worthy opponent in a difficult match. She got a lot of confidence from this win.

vs Mary Pierce. Australian Open F 97 (6-2 6-2). A pretty crap match, but her first slam, no sign of nerves and pure childlike joy at the win. She totally outplayed her more experienced opponent in every single aspect, remarkable considering Hingis had never even won a set against Pierce previously.

vs Arantxa Sanchez Vicario. New York R16 96 (6-1 3-6 6-4) - her first win over a top five player in a grand slam. This win gave her the confidence to beat Novotna and then play a close match against Graf in the semis. Everyone watching knew that she would be top five in 97. Really exciting time

vs Anna Kournikova R32 Melbourne 98 (6-4 4-6 6-4) - May not seem like a huge match, but it really was. With this loss Kournikova started to lose confidence and begin the downward spiral into obscurity. With this win, Hingis realised the title was hers for the taking, and it was only round 3.

vs Lindsay Davenport, Chase Champs F 98 (6-4 7-5 4-6 6-2) - Her first title in six months, and her first at the YEC. Gave her a lot of confidence going into 99.

vs Venus Williams, San Diego F 99 (6-4 6-0) - Showed herself, Venus, and the world that she had finally put the French Open and Wimbledon disasters of that year behind her, and was ready to keep on trucking!

vs Venus Williams, New York SF 99 (6-1 4-6 6-3) - A high quality match which delayed the first all Williams final at a Grand Slam for another year.

vs Lindsay Davenport, Miami F 00 (6-3 6-2). An ugly, ugly win. But one that got a huge monkey off her back, as at that point Hingis had to be questioning whether she would ever beat Davenport again!

vs Lindsay Davenport, Sydney F 01 (6-3 4-6 7-5) - A great final after a great tournament for Hingis (she beat Clijsters, Martinez and Serena in earlier matches), she then went on to beat both WIlliams sisters in the Australian Open before losing to Capriati (sob!)

vs Maria Sharapova, Tokyo F 06 (6-3 6-1) - Showed that Hingis was back for good and meant business. The first big win of her comeback.

Kim defeating Venus in the 2005 USO QF's where she came back from a set down & 4-2 down in the 2nd set & saving heaps of break pts in the 12th game of the 2nd set to close it out. Then she went on to thrash Venus 6-1 in the 3rd set.

Plus defeating Masha in the 2005 USO SF's proved that she was ready to win a slam title despite holding 5 match points in the 2nd set before closing it out in the 3rd set.

Plus defeating Justine in the 2003 Filderstadt Final was one of my fav wins for Kim. So a few there.

A lot of people are mentioning Dementieva wins. Losers. :p

Let's see. People commonly say against Capriati in the US semifinal, or against Davenport in the US quarterfinal, but her best win, that I've seen, has probably been when she beat Srebotnik 4-6 7-5 7-5 in the Stuttgart second round. They both played fabulously and Elena was down 4-6 1-4 but still won, somehow. Very intense match. I loved it.

In terms of pure quality, that might have to go to the Tokyo final against Hingis. Everyone's said it, but I'll say it again: no one would have beaten her that day. Some of the most beautiful ball bashing I've ever seen.

In terms of quality of tennis, Justine's best match is (IMO) her Fed Cup win against Dementieva this year. Just flawless tennis.

Her biggest win, though, was probably the fourth rounder against Lindsay at the AO '03. That was her breakthrough, not just against Linds, but mentally at Grand Slams.

Hon mentions for the Olympics SF and the U.S. Open SF - matches she won with her heart.

For the result:

Sveta def Henin 6-2 4-6 6-3 Doha semis 2004

her first win over a reigning number 1 and her only win against henin
for me its slightly better than the win over Dementieva in the US final cos of henins reputation

for quality i would say either:

Sveta def Sharapova 6-4 6-3 Miami Final 2006
or
Sveta def Venus 6-4 6-2 Warsaw QF 2006

For me and my fave Ashley Harkleroad my two fave wins were against the same player Daniela Hantuchova

Charleston 2003 Harkleroad (World No.101) d. Hantuchova (World No.9) 6-2 6-1
Roland Garros 2003 Harkleroad (World No.52) d. Hantuchova (World No.9) 7-6 (2) 4-6 9-7

I think they show the potential Ashley has, a totally dominating win over a Top 10 player and a really gritty fight!

LMFAO.

Never saw Charleston, but Daniela must have been way off. :tape:

And RG, Daniela had 100+ UE's and still almost won. :tape:

Ashley is so amazing. :spit:

No wins over Daniela from 2003 should be counted as "good wins". :o

Ashley Harkleroad def. Daniela Hantuchova 7-6(7-2),4-6,9-7 at the French Open 2003. That put Ashely on the map for me as a fan.

Also, her 6-2,6-1 demolition of Dani at the FCC 2003 was amazing.

best win of my fav this year: Justine beats Amelie in the final of the YEC :worship:

best win of my fav in her career: Justine beats Kim in the final of Roland Garros :worship: (especially psychologically, beating her nemesis in the final of the GS she loves most gave her an enormous confidence boost).

best win isn't best match, so for Justine's best match, I agree with Saki: the Fed Cup match against Dementieva, although Justine's match against Schnyder in Berlin '05 was stunning as well

Venus (in no particular order):

bt Hingis at Wimby 2000- First victory over Hingis at a Slam, and stayed with Hingis mentally, which is something she'd never been able to do against her at a Slam. That final game was so emphatic:drool:

bt Sharapova at Wimby 05/07. In '05, she was moving and striking the ball with such ferocity. She had such fire in her eyes that day. In '07, she was served the best she ever has. Hitting 120+ serves with such regularity. Also her forehand had it's best day ever too.

bt Serena at Wimby in '08. Played a superb match, served great and out-played Serena by the end. Was mentally in a different league that day.

bt Davenport in the '05 Wiimby final. What can you say? The best comeback she's ever produced:worship:

I can't pick just one.

Elena Dementieva def. Serena Williams 5-7 6-1 6-1

Absolutely humiliated peak Serena in those last two sets, Serena was so shocked she did not recover from this match until the AO three months later.

Elena Dementieva def. Serena Williams 3-6 6-4 6-3

Here Peak Serena was fighting for the one thing she doesn't have, a gold medal in singles. Peak Serena was playing the best she has ever played but the resilient Russian wanted it just a little bit more and won.

Elena Dementieva def. Serena Williams 6-4 6-4

In the most important exhibition event in years, amazing super player Elena Dementieva beat peak Serena once again. Double digit Slam holder Serena Williams had no answer to Elena's supreme flawless play.

Elena Dementieva def. Serena Williams 6-3 6-1

Peak Elena made short work of peak Serena in amazing fashion. Unfortunately after this match she started underestimating peak Serena and she didn't play good enough in their next meeting.

apart from that it was obviously a great win for chak beating the wimbledon champion who thrashed dani 6-0, 6-3 in the round before so was in obviously good form.

That match- i've never slept well since:sad::sad::lol:

Nah, that was a great match for Chaky to win. In a way, i was kinda half-expecting it because she was in the middle of a summer reel of tournaments and Venus was coming off Wimby and Fed Cup etc, etc... However no excuses for Venus's loss, Anna just played much better, and from the clips i saw, much more astute tennis

I remember that match like if it was yesterday, I think it was the most emotional, topsy-turvy match Lindsay played, and still managed to win, that third set was so dramatic, I loved that match, Alicia was playing her best tennis in this match, that was awesome!

2. Davenport def. V. Williams 7-5 6-4 US Open 2004 4R
Only for the last game, that lasted more than 13 minutes, that match also was filled with drama in that last game, where Lindsay showed that she was mentally strong when she wanted to!

"It was just an unbelievable battle out there," Serena said of her great 4-6, 6-3, 7-5 escape. " I thought, 'I don't want to lose 6-1.' Then I said, 'I don't want to lose 6-2.' So I just kept fighting. Next thing I know, I came back."

"That's probably the only thing I regret a little bit is those two double faults," Clijsters said. "I could feel that she was really trying to step it up, and that she was hitting the balls a lot more aggressive and had almost no unforced errors at the end. That's when you just have to say, 'Too good.' That's why she's the No. 1."
