View Full Version : Which woman will win her 6th grand slam first, Justine, Martina or Venus?

Morrissey
Dec 25th, 2006, 10:40 PM
So, the Australian Open is about to start, now obviously Justine is the clear favourite to win the title. If Justine wins in Australia she will hit a milestone winning her 6th grand slam. Serena is currently the only active WTA player that has won more then 6 slams. Venus Williams, Martina Hingis, and Justine Henin Hardenne are all tied with 5 slams each. I actually think Martina Hingis is going to surprise people in Australia and could win the whole thing. Venus is injured and has fallen off. So I can see Martina or Justine winning a 6th grand slam first.

I don't see Venus having a real shot until Wimbledon... but I could definitely see JHH and Martina winning the AO. Those 2 with Maria are my 3 top picks to win the AO.

It'll be Justine hands down I'd say, but hey Martina could throw a spanner in the works if she's at her best.

Justine, and I think she'll have it by the end of next month too, I'd rather it be Venus though...

Justine has a 90% chance of taking home one of the first 2 Grand Slams, they just suit her game, same with Martina, except she lacks that power Justine has, but she could make a run at one of them, Venus to me is not even in the picture at the moment.

if i choose to go by heart, i would say HINGIS.

I'd love to see Martina win another slam next month at the AO...but the faster conditions will only lessen her odds. I hope Martina can sneek through a draw and grab one more slam before she is done (again), but she will need a kind draw / certain players not at their best. No more Davenport is a boon. Clijsters being done in a while will be too.

I see Justine/Masha as the faves for AO title, and Justine as the top contender for the FO...so most likely she will take her 6th in the first two slams of next year.

Poor Venus :( :( :(

Justine has won at least one major in each of the last 4 years.
Martina and Venus combined have won one major in the last 5 years.
So Justine would be a huge betting favorite.

But I don't think Justine winning more majors is a given. Two of the players she played in slam finals this year are getting older and better. There are other pretty good players around.

Justine is the logical answer right now. Do mighty fine in every tournament she plays.

Hingis could show even better things in 2007 so we should not write her off.

Venus' health is a question. let's go step by step.

but this is tennis, you never know. they may all end 2007 without the sixth slam.

7th in Paris..

Probably JHH.

Venus lacks match play.

Hingis needs to get past a QF first (in her comeback).

Does anyone realize it's 8 years since Hingis has won her last Slam?
Eight years... If she wins in Melbourne or Paris it'll be the longest gap between Slam titles in tennis history, I think.

Martina's best slam results have always been in Australia she's won the Australian Open the most among active players. Hingis has also been in the finals an amazing six years in a row from 1997 to 2002. Hingis even mad the quaterfinals this year and that's from having a three year lay off. I think Hingis showed at the WTA championships that she means business. She can comeback the courts in Australia are not too fast for her like the US OPEN. She just needs to be a bit more agressive and I wish she would just hit her serve harder. I think she can win the whole thing. I really believe she has a good shot. Remember it also depends on your draw. And since Hingis is top 8 in the world if she gets an easy draw she could win the event.

Justine I would think is the favorite to win her 6th slam, as a Martina fan I certainly would like her to win another one but realistically Justine has the best chance...she is currently #1....already won a slam RG this year and got to the finals in the other three...pretty good credentials going into 2007....however, Martina does have a good record in Australia but like AnnaK4ever stated....it has been 8 long years since her last slam so much like when Myskina captured her RG slam, a lot of intangibles have to occur for her to pull it off. :worship: :hearts: Good luck to all the WTA gals for a healthy year ! :bounce:

8 years is a lifetime in tennis. It's amazing that so many people around here actually expect Hingis to win more GS titles EIGHT YEARS after her last GS win. Hingy made a nice comeback in '06 but she certainly didn't show that she has what it takes to get back in the GS winners circle. The odds are pretty long against her getting to #6, in 2007 or ever.

If Justine doesn't win the Aussie open, which she probably will. She's more than likely to win the French Open. I think in the Aussie Open Maria might beat her. But no one else really has anything to troble her. Maria sucks on clay, Amelie's hometown nerves. Kim doesn't have that usual spark to take it all the way and Svetlana and Nadia probably don't have enough confidence. Williams sisters lack of match play. I can't see anybody else doing anything either.

Well I think Maria will win her 3rd GS next month. But to answer the topic question: Henin will win her 6th GS before the others will. Hingis will never ever win another GS. Venus...maybe, I hope so.

MrSerenaWilliams
Dec 26th, 2006, 01:29 PM
I wouldn't say 100%, because a LOT of people thought Justine would get 5 before Venus, and JHH was the FAVE at Wimbly 05, so...I mean I wouldn't 100%, but with Venus' wrist struggles and Serena's 2 year MIA at RG (the only player who really can challenge JHH on clay), I would say Justine now, esp, considering her year-ending form. But stranger things have happened.

Billy Moonshine
Dec 26th, 2006, 01:35 PM
Serena better get her act together soon or JHH is gonna pass her.
I want Serena to make the RG final and face Hingis!!!
To answer the OP, I say JHH, next month, in melbourne.

charmedRic
Dec 26th, 2006, 02:15 PM
JHH is the odds favorite, but Martina is bound to surprise a draw. Venus needs to get back into health.

At top form, with Hingis strong, I would say Martina takes AO, Justine takes the FO and Venus takes the WImbledon trophy. So hey we might see a 6th-6th-6th progression.

That leaves the US Open for a Sharapova repeat, or a Serena comeback.

Dec 26th, 2006, 02:47 PM
Well I just read the news on Henin's website that her practice sessions went okay, and I think her game is coming to it's real top even better than last year and 2003, and if she is healthy than she could have the biggest chance to have her sixth grand slam the earliest. Although I hope Venus will be the first, but if you look at her health wise, with all these injuries it will be tough.

Wouldn't that be something. all three finding their magic on their respective best slam and surface. However, quite unrealistic in Venus and Hingi's case while it is more likely that Venus finds a patch of good health by wimby '07 and we all know what happens when Venus is healthy and playing at wimby. Only Serena can ruin that party and that's if she's at her best.

I don't really know. I don't think Venus will win another, I see another 2006 season for her, and I can only fear the worst. Hingis has an excellent record here, and shouldn't be underestimated, like she was last year. I think she has a good chance, but off-court distractions could scupper her chances. I think Justine will be the huge favourite, but I'm not really sure if she'll win here. She's lost her last two slam finals, and I don't really see her winning it. I think someone will be a suprise winner of it, like last year maybe. I don't have a clue who'll win it, but we should be in for a good tournament.

Henin-Hardenne, if she wins this year's French Open, will accomplish something very rare indeed. She'll join the select club of players who've won three consecutive titles at the French Open. Monica Seles in 1992 was the last player to win three straight French titles, and, when that happened, she was the first to do so in almost 60 years! Will JHH manage to string together seven more wins to become the only woman in the Open Era other than Seles to three-peat in Paris? We shall see...

I hope Venus will win her sixth slam first, but realistically Henin has the biggest shot. She´s big threat at Oz and owns RG. Hingis played her best slam at OZ last year so I think she is second after Henin to win her sixt slam.
