Tennis: Women's doubles shaping as star attraction
December 23, 2006
By Terry Maddaford

So often the poor cousin in international tennis tournaments, the doubles at next month's women's classic is shaping as a spectacle.
Singles top seed and world No 12 Jelena Jankovic is set to join Slovenian Tina Krizan in a pairing which shapes as the dangerous floater.
"It is not often these days your singles top seed also plays doubles," said ASB Classic director Richard Palmer yesterday. "But the indications are that Jankovic is more than likely to play both."
The Sovereign doubles are already likely to have one of the world's most successful pairings as the top seeds, with eight-time Grand Slam winners Virginia Ruano Pascual (Spain) and her Argentine partner Paolo Suarez heading to the ASB Tennis Centre.
Pascual and Suarez have unfinished business in Auckland after they were beaten in the 2004 final in what still rates as one of the biggest upsets in the tournament's history.
Jankovic, down one place from her career-high 44 on the doubles rankings, and Krizan, once ranked 19 (in 2002) on the doubles list, have played regularly this year.

They reached the quarter-finals twice and went out in three sets at Wimbledon to Martina Navratilova and Liezel Huber in the second round.
Jankovic won her first doubles title in Birmingham this year.
Defending singles champion Marion Bartoli will be one of the first to arrive in Auckland when she touches down on Tuesday to begin preparations for the title she won here a year ago.

Bartoli arrives to defend tennis title

NZPA | Tuesday, 26 December 2006

French tennis player Marion Bartoli has arrived in Auckland for the ASB Classic, the tournament that sparked a string of successes for her and shot her up the rankings ladder.

The defending champion and world No 17 said she hoped the tournament, starting on Monday, would provide another surge to her career.
"I hope the season starts as well as last time (for me). It's great to be in a place where I play good tennis. Auckland gave me plenty of confidence for the year," she said today.
"The surface in Auckland suits my game."
Bartoli, 22, has played well in Auckland since her first tournament in 2004 when she reached the semifinal.
She also reached the semifinal in 2005 and won the tournament this year, beating Vera Zvonareva in the final.
Bartoli was ranked 40 when she first played in Auckland and after winning in Auckland this year, her first singles title, she went on to claim titles in Tokyo and Quebec. Bartoli is the third seed in the $US145,000 ($NZ211,100) event next week behind No 12 Jelena Jankovic (Serbia) and former French Open champion, Anastaisa Myskina, of Russia, who is ranked 15.

Frenchwoman Marion Bartoli has arrived in Auckland to prepare to defend her ASB Classic title.
Bartoli won her first ever WTA title in this year's Classic, before going on to take two more titles in 2006.
The surface in Auckland suits my game and I dont mind playing with the wind. Its a little windy here and I like to play with the wind, she said.
Bartoli, 22, has had a dream record at the tournament where she first played in 2004 reaching the semi-finals followed by the same result the next year and then in 2006 winning the title by easily putting away Vera Zvonareva in the final.
At the time Bartoli was ranked 40 and it was the start of the great year which had her winning her first ever career singles title at Auckland and also taking the titles at Tokyo and Quebec.
Although arriving tired from her flight Bartoli was pleased to be at the courts she considers a second home.
Im very happy to be back in Auckland and hope the season starts as well as last time. Its great to be in a place where I play good tennis. Auckland gave me plenty of confidence for the year, said Bartoli.
Bartoli is the third seed at the US$145,000 event behind No12 ranked Jelena Jankovic (Serbia) and former Roland Garros champ, Anastaisa Myskina of Russia, who is ranked at 15.
