wtatour.com -> media center -> statistical leaders -> career

the problem is that they include inferior players in the lists too i.e. on grass Agnes Szavay (4-1 career record) and Olga Govortsova (7-2) whose wins are from qualifying rounds are ranked above Lindsay Davenport. So you should just ignore such players.

Why do most of Williams fans feel the need to defend their fave every time anybody mentions Venus? Even when nobody attacks her. Even when nobody tries to take it away from her. Even when somebody posts sheer numbers and nothing more.

There is very definitely an argument for putting Evert ahead of Venus on grass...she may have won it one less time than Venus, but she was runner-up there 7 times. That's pretty huge.

Not to mention that 5 of her 7 losses in finals came to the BEST grass court player ever (and no, I don't mean Venus).

Not only did Chris win 3 Wimbledons, she won the Australian Open twice on grass(once against Martina in the final), and lost in 3 tight finals, 74 to Goolagong, and 81 7-5 in the 3rd to Martina, and 3 sets to Martina in 85 to determine the world no.1 for that year.

- Total- 5 GS on grass
- Made it to all of the finals on the Australian Opens she played on grass (74, 81, 82, 84, 85 (and 88 on hard))
- 7 Wimbeldon final runners-up (losing 5 to Martina), plus only once failed to make the SF stage at Wimbeldon in 18 years (to Kathy Jordan in 83 when she had food poisoning and she was going for her 4th Grandslam title in a row).

So, out of 23 grasscourt grandslams, her record is 5 titles, 9 finals, 8SF and a 3rd round, and incredibly consistent record for 18 years of competition.

Consider this, without Martina, Chris would have ended up with 8 Wimbeldon titles, and 4 Australian Opens on grass, ie 12 grasscourt grandslams........not bad for a claycourt specialist................

I'm not saying Chris is better than Venus or Venus is better than her, but please consider what an incredible grasscourt record Chris has before dismissing her out of hand................

BTW, thank you for the stats......they yet again show Chris's versatility, skill and success on all surfaces, something that she rarely gets credit for.

Henin has won titles on all surfaces the past calendar year. I don't recall anyone overpowering her since she's been number one this time. She has the best record in the WTA.

Venus is probably the most underrated player in the WTA on clay.

Although I'm not a fan of Chris Evert I've always said she was a much better grass court player than many gave her credit for. She just happened to be around at the same period as the greatest grass courter ever.

There are so few tournaments played on grass now that the overall figures for that surface don't really give a true picture - events like Edgbaston for example rarely have more than one or two top players.

She was overwhelemed by Mauresmo A.O. Final 06, and Bartoli at this years Wimbledon.

Venus has a decent record on clay and the stats to back that up, unfortunately she has also shown that she can be inept on clay.:help:

these arguments are for the mediocre. They kept making such arguments on the men's side and look what Federer has done. Everyone has to compete given their context..

and get injured? become tired? under-perform then in wimbledon? one could come up with so many hypothetical scenarios...

baleineau

You cannot just go by %, you have to take into account the number of matches played as well. some players don't play full careers i.e. they retire at their very peak, whereas others continue to play at a slightly lower level but for a good number of years after their peak. this is shown by looking at Venus on clay in relation to ASV and Conchita. These Spaniards played 3-4 times as many matches on clay as venus, and each played on the stuff from about 15 years of age (ASV) through to 33 (Conchita). Maria and Venus, if they play full 15-20 year long careers won't end up with a better average on grass than Steffi Graf.

To compare completed careers with careers in progress is meaningless. At least take a sample based on peaks e.g. a 5-year span comparison, so you'd take MN as 1982-86 inclusive, Graf would be 87-91 inclusive, Sabatini 88-92 inclusive, Seles 88-92 inclusive, Hingis 97-01 inclusive, ASV 91-95 inclusive, Martinez 92-96 inclusive etc. and compare these against some of the current players......

That's a very close minded way at looking at what I'm saying. Look, for instance, at the list for grass court tournaments. Take each one of those player's stats at Wimbledon alone...rather than factoring in cushy warmup events. All I'm saying is that Venus' stats reflect Wimbledon alone, unlike most of the women on that list.

It's not a major point, just an observation.

I'm actually shocked that Graf is behind Venus. Probably because she didn't play many warmups either.

Btw, I also wanted to post W-L records of another 3 GS champions, namely Sue Barker, Virginia Ruzici and Mima Jausovec but I didn't find thier numbers in wtatour.com media section.

That means that Barker's, Ruzici's, Jausovec's OVERALL, INDOORS, OUTDOORS, HARD, CLAY, GRASS, and CARPET COURTS WIN-LOSS RATIOS are all below 0.600.

Justine was not overwhelmed against Mauresmo. True, she lost, but in three close sets. Losing to Bartoli had to be a fluke! Either Justine was having an off day or something happened during that match for her to lose 6-1, in the third set. Bartoli probably played the match of her carrer that day. Oh, and by the way, Justine did beat Amelie in the Eastbourne final this year in a close 3 setter.

The grass one is distorted a bit by the lack of current tournaments. Navratilova and Evert played lots of lower tier tournaments on grass because grass was widespread - Graf plays Wimbledon and not much else on grass because by her time its rare.its a lot of matches anywhere versus a GS field. Because there are few tournaments now you also still gain on this stat from playing lower tiers - Maria for instance plays Birmingham which Graf didn't and Navratilova played Eastbourne which Graf usually avoided. The result is Maria and Navratilova get a higher percentage of wins on grass. It doesn't happen on other surfaces because there are more tournaments and most players end up playing a similar number rather than some having twice or three times as many grass court matches in a year.

Otherwise its very interesting.

Love the stats Gaby 7th on clay, 12th on hard 12th on grass, 14th carpet on these lists, then people ask why she was inducted to the HOF :p

As a note Gaby on clay she is 7th with my "faves" Venus and Conchita behind her

And Gaby tops Conchita and Arantxa in all surfaces wow.. never expected over Arantxa on clay

The grass one is distorted a bit by the lack of current tournaments. Navratilova and Evert played lots of lower tier tournaments on grass because grass was widespread - Graf plays Wimbledon and not much else on grass because by her time its rare.its a lot of matches anywhere versus a GS field. That's not actually completely true. Grasscourt tournaments diminshed in the 70s. The Australian Open season was on grass until 1988 when it moved to rebound ace, but Martina/Chris did not play in Australia in the 70s- for example, Chris played in Australia in 74, and didn't play again until 81.

Neither played Brimingham, which Shriver won year after year. So really, they played Eastbourne (though Chris didn't play every year). But don't forget that the more you play, the more you put yourself on the line to lose. So merely playing more on grass doesn't increase your %- you've got to continue to win.

If Gaby had not retired as early as she did, her record probably would have been much worse...

Fortunately, Arantxa and Conchi will always be remembered as greater players than Gaby anyway :)

Titles won on each surface added (except Evert and Navratilova: their data are complete mess).

Serena has the highest win rate among active players, the most grandslams among active players, and she leads Justine in more categories than Justine leads her.
