Davenport's retirement from the game prompted me to away and do a bit of research on other players careers and look into just how dominant they have been...

I think somebody else wrote in and said that Davenport was never a shining star like the others, just somebody who worked hard, and got the job done consistently for many years (unlike those who were supposedly better/more talented etc.)

So I took a look at all the major tournaments played and compared her to the other 'greats' or potential 'greats of the last 10 years....I've excluded Seles and Graf because I feel that their best tennis came well before Lindsay's....

Now guys, correct me if i'm wrong...but some interesting facts which intrigued me....

*Davenport NEVER won Miami - pretty much the only American hardcourt tournament which she never captured.
*Serena and Henin Hardeene are the only 2 that have won Roland Garros.
*Davenport NEVER won any of the major clay court events
*With the exception of Paris [Indoors] 2002, Venus has never won any of the important events in the first part of the year on hardcourts (before Miami - i think she hates Australia lol).
*Hingis is the only player out of the 8 of them to have won Moscow.
*Every player has won the Year end Championships EXCEPT Venus Williams.
*Every player has won the US Open EXCEPT Mauresmo
*Between 1997-2004, only 3 players won Miami - Serena, Venus, Hingis.
*In every tournament listed above, Hingis has been a champion, except Roland Garros.
*Serena has never won a major indoor event apart from the Championships in 2002.
*Hingis and Davenport were the only two champions in Tokyo from 1997-2004 until Sharapova won in 2005.
*Henin Hardeene (the best clay court player ever) has NEVER WON the most prestigious clay court Roland Garros warm-up event in Rome.

let me know what you think!

Great to see Hingis and Davenport's names in almost all the biggest tournaments:yeah: They both have one hell of a career:worship:

Well, Justine doesn't play Rome, so it's hard for her to win it.. She plays Berlin instead.

Wow, had Lindsay won the '05 Tokyo final and Hingis the '06 final, they would have owned that event from 1997-2006

Also, Henin-Hardenne is not the greatest clay-court player ever

i hope Hingis doesnt go as the greatest player who have never won RG :(
But unless she bucks up or henin screws up, i am afraid she might happen :(

she missed alot of chances in the late 90s

Why would rome be more prestigious than Belrin ? plus Justine has almost never played in Rome, that would be an explanation lol (she only played once in 2002 and lost in the final)

I love Justine but, no, she's not. Chris Evert's record on clay is

Not yet, no. But time is on her side, if she say wins 3 more RG titles before she retires she may have a shot.

Evert won 7 RG titles. She had a 125 match winning streak on clay.

I don't see Justine winning 8 RG titles in total or getting close to that win streak. I hope she will but I'm realistic!

125.........easy. I guess you're probably right then.

Lindsay was so consistent on the tour. At nearly every tournament she regularly played, she has been the champion, aswell as reaching the later stages every year.

She and Hingis owned the Pan Pacific Open. Both share a record of 4 singles titles. Also at Scottsdale, Indian Wells, Amelia Island, Charleston (her favourite of the big claycourt events), Eastbourne etc. she has played well at these places year after year....Charleston is the only one she didn't win.

and Henin is nowhere near the best claycourter of all time. I would even put Sanchez-Vicario ahead of her right now.

Great stats, thanks for all of that! Justine, while she isn't the best claycourt player ever, definately has the potential to move on up. I'd put her below Arantxa at this point simply because Arantxa won so many clay events. However, in another 5 years Justine could easily get another 3 FO crowns.

Sorry, but Justine hasn't even come close to accomplishing what Chris Evert accomplished on clay. Not by a mile.

Bitch lost to Patty and Petrova this year alone. :help:

(Shit, even Graf is a better clay-courter!)

on the contrary, i think venus gets too much respect. after all, people compare her career to hingis'!

close examination of the stats, however, reveals that venus has never and will never be able to produce champion tennis on any surface other than grass & U.S. hardcourt. we all know that grass court tennis is an anomaly and she hasn't won a major U.S. hardcourt tournament in eons anyway

Someone is drinking alot of hater-aid.... For someone who has no skill on any surface but fast and grass courts Venus sure has managed to beat almost every top player on clay (including Martina) more than once. She doesnt have anything else to prove to anyone besides herself.

i really hope venus wins rg in 2007 (which she is fully capable of) so she can have greater verification that she is worthy of praise.

Rome 2002: Serena Williams d. Justine Henin Hardenne :wavey:

I have this match on my pc and watched it again just the other day. They both played AMAZING tennis  .
It was a VERY close match. Serena played a couple of points better and won. Man Serena was awesome back then. Striking the ball with conviction.
At 4-all in the 2nd set, Serena hit his jaw-dropping one handed backhand 'pickup' winner crosscourt, passing Justine at net. even Justine had to clap on that point. Justine was so impressive as well. Her backhands down the line were out of this world.
If Serena gets into good shape that is a rivalry I would love to see continue.

Although Justine's serve motion back then... :help:
It was all 'crouching tiger'

No Antwerp on the list? Venus has won and performed well there. [ Re: Venus does not perform well early on in the year ].
Not enough emphasis is placed on how well Serena played between 2001-2003. She amassed so many titles and accomplishments.

And indeed, Davenport is the most consistent player I have ever seen. She NEVER lost to anyone she wasn't supposed to and when she did lose, she went down tightly. The Wimbledon 2005 Final, Australian Open QF 2006. An amazing girl, sad to see her go. :/

Actually it's kind of funny Vicario did not really win that many big clay court events. Conchita Martinez has more clay tier 1's than her, she owned Rome in the early 90's.
