In light of Davenport's recent announcement, I thought it might be interesting to revisit this amazing win by Goolagong. In 1980, as a 29-year-old mother, and 9 years after her first Wimbledon title, she wins her second Wimbledon, beating Tracy Austin in the semis and defeating Chris Evert 6-1, 7-6 in the final. She proved her critics wrong -- remarkable. :worship:

If Davenport returns in 2008, she can repeat this feat. ;)

Unfortunately, it won't happen but I'd love to see that one, though :p

No, changed surname doesn't mean she's a mother :haha:

Marvellous effort by Evonne, esp as she was riddled by injuries in the last few years leading up to that exciting achievement.

Even more remarkeable, IMO, is that Margaret Court won 3 of the 4 Grand Slam singles titles in 1973 - and dominated the season after having a child the year before! :worship:

And then in 1975, after having her 2nd child in 74, she made the Wimbledon Semis and won the Wimbledon Mixed and USO Womens Doubles titles! :worship:

Just had to add this as most fans and journalists seem to either not know this, or they don't acknowledge it.

Bravo Evonne and Margaret - the two most outstanding tennis mums in the open era.

Evonne is the most recent mother to win a major but in the open era, Margaret Court won the other three majors as a mother in 1973. There must be something in the Aussie water!

There's a challenge for Steffi!

That 1980 Wimbeldon had one of the strongest fields in a grand slam ever. Everyone turned up that year. Evonne also won a classic semi-final against Tracy Austin, after beating Hana in the QF.

Great thread MisterQ:)

The last woman to win Wimbledon before Court was Dorothea Lambert Chambers. It was in 1914 (no Wimbledon in 1916 due to the war) and she was well into her 30s!

Congrats to all the moms who've won the big one-and may Davenport find all the joy in the world when she becomes a mom.:)
