Sharapova-Davenport exhibition match in Seoul cancelled
SEOUL, Dec. 13 (Yonhap) -- A New Year's exhibition match in Seoul between Maria Sharapova and Lindsay Davenport has been cancelled due to the latter's pregnancy, an organizer said Wednesday.

The two world-class players were due to clash on the first day of 2007 in Seoul.

"Early this morning, we were notified from the agent for Davenport that she cannot play the exhibition match because of her pregnancy," Lee Seung-hwan, the president of sports marketing company Sema Sports, told Yonhap News Agency. "Because of the short notice, we have decided to cancel the event."
The company has arranged various sporting events, including a tennis exhibition match between Roger Federer and Raphael Nadal last month and Sharapova and Venus Williams last year.

Why would she want to get pregnant on her last year of tour? Wouldn't she want to focus on great results and then get pregnant after she retires?

How can she play tennis when she is pregnant

The bit about the exhibition cancelled might be true but I seriously doubt the bit about Lindsay being pregnant is true.

There's a reason this is in my signature...

If these walls came crumbling down,
Fell so hard to make us lose our faith
From what’s left you’d figure it out,
Still make lemonade taste like a sunny day

Stay beautiful baby
I hope you stay American baby
American baby

Nobody’s laughing now
Gods grace lost and the devil is proud
But I’ve been walking for a thousand miles
One last time I could see you smile

I, I hold, hold, on to you
You bring me hope I’ll see you soon
And if I don’t see you,
I’m afraid we’ve lost the way

Stay, beautiful baby
I hope you stay American baby
American baby

I, I hold , hold on to you
You bring me hope I’ll see you soon
And if I don’t see you
I’m afraid we’ve lost the way

Nobody’s laughing now
Cause you could always make me laugh out loud
Stay American baby…

Oh, and I don't understand why everyone thinks there's a possibility that it's false.
It's a legit article, that's what it says.
Her agent wouldn't be bullshitting about something this personal, serious, and sensitive to Lindsay.

i meant that at least like aggasi like or kim, where we knew the player is going to retire....rather then suddenly retire.
at least fans can see her in her last tournament she is playing.
besides, wta should definitely giving her tributes, i mean she is definitely one of the greats in the game.

Something this sensitive would be hard to screw up on. As much as I don't want Lindsay to end her career (for whatever the reason) I just can't see how this is not for real.

You'd be surprised on how much changes in 3 months. My sister at three months wasn't showing all that much, but noticable. My sister quit playing soccer at two months... so she was a fit girl too. Remebering it would be impossible for her to play at five months... that's when she'll really start to show... big time.

My favorite player is on the verge of retiring. I'm upset because I was under the assumption that she was to play another season.
Even if this is good news (better than having to retire due to an injury) it still sucks for me as her fan. I wanted to see her play more.

I find it more bizarre when fans claim not to mind that their favourite player is retiring. I'd be really upset if Justine retired earlier than she intends in order to have babies. It's not that I don't want her to be happy but I'm a fan of hers because I like watching her play tennis.

It's not a good feeling; her fans are allowed to be upset so don't be stupid. If they don't want to get a grip then you can't force them to.

This is upsetting news and I feel for her fans seriously! But she always wanted to have a baby! Which is more than what winning a grandslam can do. Having a baby and giving life is the most amazing experience of your life.

I find it more bizarre when fans claim not to mind that their favourite player is retiring. I'd be really upset if Justine retired earlier than she intends in order to have babies. It's not that I don't want her to be happy but I'm a fan of hers because I like watching her play tennis.

Well, Justine is still young and winning titles left and right, that's different. Lindsay is 30, has struggled with injuries, and was out most of last year. This isn't really a big shock, and I for one have already made peace with her impending retirement already when it looked like she wasn't coming back las year. I also know how important it is to her to be home and start a family and be happy -- and if tennis isn't making her happy (hello, Bali and Beijing) and this will then all the power to her.

So, we think she's been pregnant for at least a month now, right? If so, why did she give out some bullshit 2007 plan. Was she told to keep quiet so Hong Kong could sell tickets?

A couple of things she said after the exo match with the oldies was really suspicious to me. She was like "I feel great, and plan to start practicing late November". So, she felt great but pulled out of all tournaments after China with 'injury'. Oh.

She'd have to about 3 months if she comfortable enough to tell people, like her management. And that leads me to what I don't get, why lie? I don't find it odd at all. Especially since they've been used to speculations about her retirement for a while and talk about having babies has come up before as well. Lindsay is 30 and not getting any younger.

I wouldn't be surprised if Momo retired at that age too, would be sad but pleased with all she has accomplished ; it's not like Lindsay hasn't had a full career but to each their own opinions ...............

Well, clearly she wouldn't have found out the day after :p I'm not a mathematician but 28 days is a normal cycle if I'm not mistaken...

Yeah, maybe. But maybe she didn't want to say, "Hey Guys, I'm 2 weeks pregnant, goodbye tennis!", especially if something went wrong. If she needed to wait until she was 3 months pregnant to be comfortable enough to announce it, she had to comment on her 2007 and couldn't say "I might be playing. Or maybe not. It depends." Lord knows all of us in TOP would be up in arms if she did that. So she gave the "7-8 tournaments, feeling good" spiel. She wasn't in a position to announce an extremely early pregnancy, nor could she keep silent and announce no plans for 2007. That's why they're called "plans" - they change.

Why would she feel the need for such trickery? It doesn't make any sense. I mean, for all we know, John was on house arrest, decided to switch all her pills with placebos, and got her pregnant because he wanted to start a family and she pushed him in the pool because she was mad that people would think she was being a trickster.

Just me or the boobs is bigger than usual? I guess it's true after all

And she looks a little chubbier and out of shape in those pictures, would you agree?

Saki: Lindsay has been saying for a long time that she wants children. She did not play the autumn indoor circuit, in which she excels, and seems to have lost interest in her ranking.

Judging by her interviews at the US Open, she sounded like she was only playing because she hadn't yet found the strength to make a commitment to retiring. She found the idea of retirement hard to digest, even though she admitted that it was looming.

I suspect that Lindsay's husband and herself have not been "taking precautions" and just seeing what happens. I remember Lindsay saying quite openly, which surprised me, that she had doubts that she would ever be able to have children. So I think they have probably been trying, knowing that Lindsay's career seems to be on ice at the moment.

Most women who have just learned they're pregnant are not asked to announce to the world their plans for the next nine months. They have a few months to adjust to the news personally, prepare themselves, plan, and wait to see if the baby is doing all right in this fragile stage of the pregnancy. In the meantime, they do the only alternative -- act as though everything is normal. And they are 100% justified in doing so. It's unfair to expect Lindsay to have behaved any differently.

No, but I'm saying if her pregnancy was in its very, very early stages in November when Lindsay "promised" you she'd play in 2007, and she wasn't comfortable announcing it (and therefore, her retirement), then I don't think it's irrational for her to say she's going to play in 2007 (because, since it was November, everybody is curious about her plans) or to keep her commitment in HK on the table. Now it's 3 months later and it's for real, and here we go.

Instead of being pissed off at Lindsay for not playing in 2007 because she had to go be a horrible person and become pregnant... let's.. be happy for her?

It still sucks that she's retiring. It's still hurts. And that's why I'm upset. I wasn't prepared for this to happen right now. I expected her to play Australia. Play Indian Wells at least.

I feel that if she had just said in November that she gave it a lot of though and realized that at her age and with her health it wasn't worth trying again because she's "not the player she used to be" and just simply announced her retirement it wouldn't be so bad right now.

I know you and some others made peace with it ages ago, but I never did. I couldn't do it. Now I have to. And I don't want to.

Well I think it is irrational. She didn't have to tell us she was pregnant at that stage, you're right. She should have told us she wanted a baby and is retiring from tennis, what would have been so bad about that?

If she DID have problems and lost the baby, for whatever reason, there's no way she was going to come back on tour next year, IMO.

I'm pretty hopeful. Sandrine Testud played Wimbledon when she was 2 months pregnant and won a match.

Lindsay doesn't move much anyway even when she's on her game.
We heard of a player in the ITF circuit playing while she was 8 months pregnant.
I still think she might play the Australian Open even if she is pregnant.
It's her favorite slam. She's not finished yet.

No reason to get down on herself and play Sharapova though before she gets there.

I'm going to miss that the most, other than simply seeing her name on a scoreboard.
Unfortunately those days are gone.

She should play the exhibition match at least. After all, it's only an exhibition match. I think it would be even more interesting. Or she's in the 8th month already?

We don't know if she has decided not to play the Australian Open.
If the doctors say she can, then why not.
I still feel there's hope.

I don't think she'll play it.

On an interesting side note I was scrolling thru the new 07 rule book and saw this cute little change to the spot about Gold Exempt Emertus Status:

New wording added to the Gold Emeritus Status Policy
The following has been added to the requirements for Gold Exempt status: “The rule is not intended for an active, top-ranked player, but for a player who has retired or who has notified the WTA Tour, in writing, that she intends to retire from competitive play prior to the start of the Tour Year and will only be playing a very limited schedule of special appearance tournaments.”

How much money do we want to bet that that change sent her over the edge?
I would be uber confused now.

She would likely be playing in Sharapova's maternity dress that she wore to the Australian Open last year.
Or Sharapova could duplicate her Linz 2006 maternity dress for the Seoul exhibition.

Why would she be sent over the edge?
She isn't a top ranked player anymore.
She does intend to retire from competitive play next year.
She would be playing a limited schedule of special appearance tournaments.

If it is true, maybe she will come back afterwards like Lindsay Lee-Waters (who has come back on tour after giving birth to 2 children). Highly doubt that though.

Maybe she felt that they purposly changed the rule because she was demanding of have the exempt? Maybe she didn't want to totally retire? I don't know. I just feel like if she hadn't hurt her back so bad and if she had been granted the exempt when she originally asked she would want to keep playing.

But obviously, she has made peace with it so there's nothing I can say that'll change that.

The blind article said a big name would not play the Australian because she's pregnant.

Why not?! :) Would a chair be so heartless as to smack a time warning on a birthing woman? I doubt it.

I wonder if she'll come back and do commentary. I hope so.

If she actually realised she had fans, then perhaps a book? I'd love to read about everyone calling her a fatty, what winning the Olympics did to her confidence, mental barriers, tour gossip, Larry Scott.

But she won't.

She might to commentary for like the slams and stuff. Or the tournaments in California.

I'd love her to write a book. I want to what she really thinks about some of these players. ;)
