Also, when (the year) do you think they will win it and which Grand Slam.

I would say Shuai Peng 2010 US Open.

Maria Sharapova 2004 Wimbledon, geographically Siberia is part of Asia ;)

Seriously, I don't think it will happen in this generation.

I am sure an Asian player will win a slam one day, but it won't anybody we have heard of yet.......unless Iroda Tulyaganova manages to capture her past form, and then exceed it considerably.

I don't think the players on the list are multidimensional enough to seriously challenge for one.

and why are you only listing Chinese players aside from Ai that is? the other Asians are playing well too!

As an Indian-American, I feel insulted by this snub of Sania Mirza. She is still in singles at the Asian Games. I don't know the current result. However, my point is made. She can play. She is not quite the athlete of Oberoi sisters who aren't mentioned as well. I don't dispute the other Asian players but please Ai Sugiyama over Sania. I know Ai has a better overall record than Sania but no power to match the Russians and other Asians in slams.

I don't think the first Asian Grand Slam winner is going to be anyone from this generation. In fact, I'm not sure any of the other girls listed will be able to be as successful as Ai has been. An Asian Grand Slam winner will happen, but I'm not sure when.

This Poll is a Joke. You left many players.

Yes it is possible. There are a lot of talented Asians. Na Li is the best bet after that Sania Mirza.

I would fancy Sania's chances of winning USO.(not now but may be five years from now. Who knows Right now she is amatuer but when she finds a right coach her games will be dominating.)

Any i won't mind players winning grand slams i would be happy if they win some Tier I or Tier II tourneys. I won't be dissapointed if they don't win GS.

None of the current Asian players will be winning a slam. It will happen at some point but not with the current group.

Isn't Russia Asia? Plus all those nations a little to the west of Russia. So do you guys mean like South East Asia and South Asia?

Ben.
Dec 11th, 2006, 06:42 AM
Best chance I reckon is Na Li, but who knows though. just too many consistent players above her at the moment.

Where's the "none of those listed" option?
Yan and Zheng together might win several more (in dubs of course) but otherwise... Na? Naaah. Peng? Nope. Ai? Only in doubles. Actually I don't see any slam champs from Asia coming out until at least several more years

Andy.
Dec 11th, 2006, 06:47 AM
The only one I can see winning a slam from that group is Li Na

I think if the stars aligned, Ai or Jie could possibly win a Grand Slam. But this is wishful thinking. I think Ai has passed her time, unfortunately.

I would say Shuai Peng 2010 US Open.

So you are assuming the first Asian singles Grand Slam will be Chinese? And Ai is well past her prime for that matter.

And who knows, the first Asian champion could even be from the States someday.

None of the above! :) But Iroda Tulyaganova or Sania Mirza can win a slam title of they're on top form.

Dec 12th, 2006, 07:19 AM
Kimiko could have been. There are very talented Asian players, but some countries don't have great tennis programs. Of course, it is a bit odd to group all the many countries around the region into just Asia. It's more of the person than the country or nationality anyway.

Anyway, it would be really cool if Ai did win a slam... like Wimbledon. Maybe, Mauresmo and Venus and stuff could boycott Wimbledon that year :) But then again, everyone would just call her a fluke. I really don't think Na Li can do it, just not consistent enough at this stage. Sania Mirza, refining her tennis would definitely increase her chances.

Mirza. By far the best of the asians right now, and she isn't even on the poll.
I don't know about Peng. She seems to have disappeared with all the recent problems, but I don't think her win over clijsters was a fluke.
