Injury?

Yes
Knee injury which occured in Qatar and she is out for two months. She is likely to make a comeback in Budapest.

Since cricket world cup going on nobody will show interest in Fed Cup anyway.

Marina Erakovic is considering not coming - possibly to make sure that Sacha Jones gets into the Fed Cup team (Sacha would benefit from it more than Marina would and Marina could get some easy points in that time anyway)

kittyking

Just read in the paper today its going to be completely free entry to Fed Cup Asia/Oceania Group I & II on April 17-21!!!

(also I see that Sania Mirza isnt counted as one of the stars coming anymore, she must be injured)

I saw today that Marina has snubbed the Fed Cup team. Good on her I say, NZ dont need her with the opponents their playing :o We will win easily!

The squad is:

Leanne Baker (C)
Ellen Barry
Dianne Hollands
Sacha Jones

Good luck girls!!

Marina didnt snub us, shes just not fully recovered from her injury so wants to play some weaker 25k events while fed cup is on

Pity that Sania wont be here, does anyone have the list of all the players from the other teams? Im hoping that Iroda, Tammy, The Taipei Chans will be here.

Willux
Apr 2nd, 2007, 05:06 AM
Marina did snub the Fed Cup tournament in Christchurch...but only because she was injured for a period of time which she missed a couple of big tournaments that she intended to play and did not play.

It probably is not fair to say that the 25k tournaments are weaker..i mean she lost in the first round the last one she played. So to emphasise that they are weak is showing that she's weak which i highly doubt because she's a great player and there would be tougher players in America so yup!

kittyking
Apr 2nd, 2007, 07:26 AM
I dunno wtf your on about

I said weak in the way that their are reasonably weak fields (see their entry lists) during the week before and after fed cup which Marina has entered herself into. She will hopefully gain enough points to pull her back inside the top 150 (shes slipped to 161)

Shona Lee has replaced Leanne Baker in the New Zealand Fed Cup team after Baker has had a slow recovery from a wrist injury.

Lee, 18 and ranked at 604 in the world joins Ellen Barry, Sacha Jones and Marina Erakovic in the New Zealand team which will compete in Christchurch 18-21 April for the BNP Paribas Asia/Oceania Group 1 and 2 tournament at the Scenic Circle Hotels Tennis Centre, Wilding Park.

OOPS!!! That was in my dreamland - in real life...

Shona Lee has replaced Ellen Barry in the New Zealand Fed Cup team after Barry has had a slow recovery from a wrist injury.

A couple of former top-20 ranked players have been confirmed for their respective teams with Iroda Tuluganyova playing for Uzbekistan. She reached a high of 16 in January 2002 and Tamarine Tanasugarn of Thailand who made it to No19 in May 2002.

I'll be there all day Thursday and probably one other other day too. On off my best mates is going Monday-Thursday, another one of my mates is going there Friday-Saturday. We are just trying to see what the regulations are around doing little videos of it on our mobiles and even about taking pictures of players.

The press conference was pretty cool, although there wasnt actually that many players (or press, there was only like 7 journalists there). There was some young girl there (cant remember her name, she looked about 15) who seemed pretty annoyed about the two divisions were combined.

Just saw some practising this morning, quite a few must have arrived overnight as most courts seemed to be being used today. I briefly talked to Leanne Baker - shes alot nicer than she was last year  so nice that even wished her best of luck. Di Hollands was also there but just seeing how the other girls seemed to play, I had a like 2 minute chat with her - I wasnt aware that shes actually based here in Christchurch now (she mentioned that she has done quite a few hits with Ellen recently and that shes really sad that Ellens injury ruled her out of play).

Sacha Jones may not arrive until Wednesday, I really cant see us doing that well especially against quality opposition.

Speaking of that there was a scheduled press conference tonight at like 9pm but it has been cancelled. Play starts tomorrow at 9.30am I think, as you already know its free entry for a pretty much all access.

That was in May 2006 during the tournament at 25K Coatzacoalcos, MEX. She was sick with food poisoning and she was given an injection by a tournament's therapist but she didn't get better. She was admitted to a hospital and the doctor there said she would have gone if she was a fraction late. She felt numb all over her body and had cramps around her stomach.

Now she is 100% OK. Hope she will be doing well in NZL. Please don't forget to say "Hi" (from Jiro) to her and other Thai players.

Enjoy. :wavey:

Di played alright..her serve is a bit wobbly at times. Leanne Baker played alright. She is definitely the highest quality player out of the NZ Squad...she double bagled her opposition. The doubles was Shona and Leanne. Again, not much opposition. They actually didn't seem to compliment each other...but still double bagled their opponents...The best matches of the day belonged to Thailand vs. Hong Kong China...they played awesomely...hard hitting from the baseline and precision was also there!

Yea why didnt Indonesia go to Israel anyway, I heard about it last year but I didnt look into it much.

From what I remember the Indonesian Tennis Fed said they didn't have a problem playing Israel but rather that they did not want to play in Israel b/c they don't have diplomatic relations. They kind of gave the run around, but the thing is when the actual tie was supposed to take place is when the conflict in Lebanon began. Anyhow, it was a mess.

Kia ora koutou,

I went to the Fed Cup today. The NZ team were practising in the back courts. Sacha Jones has arrived and she must be tired as but still hitting the ball hard..Lets start with hong kong and Uzbekistan..i watched both sets with Iroda and the other girl. It was a set all..very close match...Iroda is hitting the ball hard on every point..the hong kong chinese girl was very much more steadier...I took a foto with Shika Uberoi..she's the most loveliest out of all the ladies i have met there...so kind and talked to me a alot..Iroda took a time out for her injury..must be a hip or back one...she was wearing the shortest and tightest shorts...she reminds me of serena williams wif her body and all...India demolished Jordan...and i was watching Korea demolishing Singapore..the coldness was so unbearable..I watched the top 200 girl with 2 hands both sides from Chinese Taipei play the match of her life to beat this girl from Kazakstan (borat country)...she has the best touch i have seen at the tourny so far...um, no sign of Tamarine Tanasugarn at the mo...The number 2 girl on the uzbekistan team looks like a man...it was hard to take fotoz of iroda today coz of the angle and view...you couldn't get close up!!

I think that they should stick Sacha as number one singles, Leanne as number two singles and then Di and Leanne in doubles.

Sacha is in very good form atm, while Leanne hasnt had a very solid year so far on tour. Unless they wanted to stick Sacha at number two so she would have a higher chance of winning, so even if Leanne gets thrashed against their top player then it would all come down to doubles.

Close Fed Cup Match
New Zealand are at one match a piece with India one day three of the BNP Paribas Fed Cup in Christchurch.

Sixteen-year-old Sacha Jones ranked at 557 in the world started the tie with a win over Shikha Uberoi 7-6(5) 6-3. The victory over a player ranked at 236 in the world was a career best for Jones.

In the match between the two top players Leanne Baker at 270 in the world was defeated by Sunitha Rao (ranked at 229) 6-4 6-2.

Baker and Di Hollands are playing the doubles together.

I was there this morning when Sacha played, I didnt take any pictures tho(stupid cameras dead I found out at 7:30 this morning)

Sacha played absolutely stunningly!!!! She didnt start very well, but once she started to attack the ball alot more she was pretty much unstopable. And yea in the second set it always seemed to look like she was going to win, although I cant help but feel that Shika gave the match alittle towards the end (she more concentrated on just putting the ball back in court which was never going to stop Sacha attack rolling on).

Oh and Sacha is very beautiful btw :)

I saw alittle bit of Leannes match too, I gotta say I was actually pretty impressed by her (her shot selection still needs ALOT of work though) and im surprised to see that she lost the first set because she was playing better than Sunitha when I left. I couldnt see Willux there but im hoping that he was and that he can do a report on that match.

I hope we won the doubles match!!!!!!!

Okay...let's start with Sacha...she played awesomely...she's very intense..much like Monica Seles and she's soo young too. She deserved to beat Shika (who is really nice btw). She is playing behond her years and I was so proud to see her win against someone so ranked high. Good on you Sacha! Even though Shika wasn't playing her best, who cares! You got her in straight sets..awesome stuff!

I'm disappointed on how Leanne Played. If you are reading this Leanne, I suggest you spend a few months training on clay or something! you lack consistency at the moment...sometimes you are puzzled on which shot you should hit. You are never gonna make the top 200..you need to show intensity and start charging the net. you have got the best SERVE and best VOLLEYS out of everyone playing the fed cup..so start using them to your advantage!!!! The reason why Sunitha won is because she was more steady and consistent! Full stop..nothing else.

The Doubles...this is where Leanne Shines...she played awesomely..some breath-taking shots...Her and Di gelled well as a team..um, they should have won the second set..but the wrong shots at the wrong time didn't help and the Indians were never going away...they were geting angry with themselves..i commend Sunitha coz she was the steady one out of the two indian girls...Di's serve is still not a weapon...so i could see that the Indians were trying to break her and they did on most occasions..it's kind of hard to break the serve of Leanne..lefty hook serve! I left after the second set tiebreak!

Thats the first thing i remarked, tammy looks slimmer than usual.
Let me be realistic:

1. She is wearing all black, which makes anyone look slimmer

2. Even if she has lost a lot of weight, it wont change her results on clay this season, she will go out in the 1st round of every clay event like many other years.

................. I still love tammy, so i hope she gets her ass back to europe and tries to make some sort of impact on clay, just a few wins... anything.

Honestly I'd rather Tammy play in Asia after Fed Cup for the events in Gifu and Fukuoka - At this point in her career, she's just not winning matches on clay, and I don't see that changing much. She can't afford to play a good 3 months of clay court tennis without earning points when her ranking is what it is. Tammy's still capable especially on grass, but her ranking means that she's got no guarantees that she's not going to draw a top seed at Wimbledon and the grass warm-ups where she'll be relying on picking up good points to make up for the clay season. Any points from Gifu and Fukuoka would be better than nothing, and if she does happen to win a round on clay after then that's bonus. She should be sticking to her strengths as often as possible, she still has a couple years left in her with the right scheduling to sustain a top 100 ranking :)

Nice win over Iroda today :D

I was there today

Massive upset of the day: Uzbekistan beat Tammy and her crew in doubles 6-4 in the third!!!

Most boring match of the day: Leanne Bakers match - her opponent didnt want to be there and Leanne never featured in the match

Best match of the day: Sachas match - she played very well and it was always looking like it would be 3 sets

Finally got it together team: The honour is split between the New Zealand and Hong Kong Doubles teams who won very easily in the third set

Surprise of the day: Shona hanging out with Sacha (again)

Tallest player by far playing on the day: Not Iroda but the other Uzbekistan girl

Best server of the day: Tie between Tammy and Baker

Best forehand of the day: One of the Hong Kong girls

Worst server, forehand, backhand, slice, volley among other shots: All the Jordan girls

Nicest player: Sacha Jones - her dad wins the best fan award

I actually disagree - we were expected to get absolutely thrashed yesterday and today and we didnt do too badly (we still lost but not as badly as widely predicted). We are fairly certain to be 3rd in our pool (we should thrash Borat country tomorrow).

Tamarine played a girl from Singapore who actually can play but I think she might need some more competition..she was a small guy..battled hard..but dosen't really have a weapon!! Singapore nearly took out the doubles..they won the first set so that was good to see!

Thank you very very much... :worship:

She's practically destroying everyone in Singapore tournament, so a lot of hope has been set on her, but the scoreline was disappointing and I thought she must be really bad, but now I feel a lot better....:)

Ling is so cute! I was just chatting about how nice she plays her while she was in the changeover and she turned around and said 'thankyou' in that cute little asian way (with the smile and everything).

I didnt take any pictures off her no sorry, im hoping that Hong Kong finish 3rd in their group and verse New Zealand on the final day so I can take heaps of pictures off her then :)

Oh and just in reply to the person who just sent me a PM about it - Yes Shona Lee was there today and yes she is quite hot imo but she wasnt playing today which is why I didnt take a picture off her (didnt think that a picture of her eating a sausage roll would be very suitable)

Btw I saw Taiwanese girls play include Hsieh,Hsu and Yung-Jan Chan (not here though)

Best team performance: I think Hong Kong China have played really well as a team..they are steady and just hitting everything back with precision! The team spirit is awesome!

Serve: Leanne Baker has the best serve but she hasn't been cosistent with it.

Groundstrokes: It's hard to say..haven't seen one particular girl with SELES like groundstrokes! Sacha Jones has had awesome groundies.

WORST TEAM: JORDAN! Okay, someone tell these girls to go home! Seriously, what the HELL are they doing here? They are like a local interclub ladies team...they can't play for shet and they need to do some soul-searching or coach searching!!!

There is a Singapore girl that I like. She dosen't have huge weapons but she just keeps going and going and trying and trying!! That's what a tennis player should be...

Why is New Zealands match going to be on Court 20!!! That is completely and utterly stupid!!!!

On the face of it I cant see New Zealand winning tomorrow as Hong Kong were really very good against Korea when I saw them yesterday. But then I look at it again and all New Zealand needs to do is.....
Stick Sacha Jones against Ling Zhang - Both good juniors but Sacha wants revenge after loosing to her 2 weeks ago. Also battle for most beautiful tennis player
Stick Shona Lee on as our 2nd singles player - I cant see Leanne Baker or Di Hollands winning even though they are better players than Shona is, also it keeps them fresh for doubles
Stick Leanne Baker and Di Hollands as our doubles team - Once they got their teamwork together they were stunning against Chinese Taipei!!! They compliment each other well, Leannes the most consistent player while Diannes the warrior princess.

If they do that I predict that New Zealand will win 2-1

Sacha was very good, shes a beautiful, friendly, kind, nice, gentle, fighter, strong, and did I mention beautiful player. She will definately be a top 100 player, she is playing better than Marina Erakovic was as a junior and Marina has got alot of work to do if she wants to have a better career than Sacha

Leanne was very rude - alright I acknowledge that some calls where questionable but Leanne didnt need to complain about every single one off them, she complained more than everyone else combined just in that singles match.

Dianne has lots of promise to be a good player, I hope she goes to the states or Europe and competes in plenty of 25k events it will do her alot of good. Shes definately a top 500 player, with a bit of work even top 250. My advice to her would be to stop saying sorry after missing shots in doubles, it doesnt really help any. She was the better doubles player out of her and Leanne.

A wrap up of the fed cup!

The umpires: some of these guys were amateur like..they should have practised the pronunciation of some of these players names when calling them out...it dosen't take much to go up to them beforehand and ask "how do I say your name correctly?".

I watched Leanne playing her singles and she got some crap calls...so she has a right to appeal those calls. Good on her! At least she didn't get into abusive arguing like Sunitha Rao when Sunitha played Leanne!

Okay..the ball kids. they were crap compared to the Auckland ones. Most of them didn't know where to stand and had to be told repeatedly what to do by the umpire! At least a couple weeks of training is needed for their jobs when dealing with the FED CUP! No excuses Canterbury tennis!

Dianne Hollands is a good player. I think she can make the top 350 maybe but top 300 is asking for it! Sacha Jones is getting better too. Hopefully she sticks with tennis and dosen't give up when she's 20 years old.

Thanks to the Press for the sponsorship of the tickets as well!! Really kewl to promote women's tennis in Christchurch!

Good question,
Im pretty sure that it wont be in Christchurch again (despite players raving on about good the hospitality and quality of courts was), my guess is that it will be held in somewhere in Asia - I think Thailand placed an early nomination but I cant find the source for that
