Over the past two years, Hong Kong has nurtured another tennis prodigy, the statuesque Czech star Nicole Vaidsova . Appearing for the third time in Hong Kong, Nicole has leapt up the rankings and rose to No. 9 in the world following a series of wins after reaching the semi-finals at the French Open in 2006.

Even though it is an exhibiton, I wanna see how Nicole does against Elena.

I hope Nicole/Elena can do well in doubles again - I think they won it this year.... But the #1 seeds first is gonna be tough!

Anyway, I'm just glad this event is coming up because the offseason has been so boring. Can't wait for the reports, pics, and everything else!

Organizers also revealed that tickets for the popular event have been selling fast. Co-Tournament Director, Mr. Terry Catton said "When we went on sale on December 4th, we sold nearly 25% of our budget on the first day. This is obviously due to the incredible field of players we have assembled this year, with six top ten players, headed up by Maria Sharapova World No.2; Svetlana Kuznetsova World No. 4; Kim Clijsters World No. 5; Elena Dementieva World No. 8; Nicole Vaidsova World No. 10, and now Patty Schnyder World No. 9. I am sure also that the fans are really excited at the prospect of seeing our two Chinese stars, Zheng Jie and Yan Zi, who won both the Wimbledon and Australian Open Doubles Titles this year. They are also now ranked the World’s No. 2 Doubles Team.”

Tickets are still available from all URBTIX outlets and are priced from HK$280 -$680.

The Watsons Water Champions Challenge takes place at Victoria Park from January 3rd to the 6th inclusive.

World number 10 Nicole Vaidisova has withdrawn from the doubles competition at the Watsons Water Challenge because of a hand injury.

The 17-year-old 2005 Japan Open champion was set to partner Elena Dementieva against Australian Open and Wimbledon champions Zheng Zie and Yan Zi on Wednesday.

Vaidisova will be replaced in the doubles competition by 2006 junior Wimbledon champion Caroline Wozniacki, but will feature in the singles against Dementieva on Thursday as preparation for the Australian Open, which begins on January 15.

Tournament director Terry Catton said: "Nicole Vaidisova slipped in the shower and cut a finger on her left hand.

"The tournament doctor recommends she withdraws from the doubles. However, she feels she should be fit to play in the singles tomorrow.

"The cut affects the way she can play her double-handed backhand."

Not a funny story to be honest.

Hope it will don't upset the beginning of her season.

We don't care about exhibition, she will better withdraw from this.I want her to be healthy at Ao and Sidney!

Well hopefully it isn't too bad if she feels like it'll be OK to play the singles match tomorrow. If it isn't then yeah withdraw because Sydney and AO are so close... But still - a slip in the shower is bad - we should be thankful it wasn't anything too serious.

Video interview

http://sports.163.com/07/0104/00/33V01A3P00051CDG.html

you can see her finger taped...

Nicole was asked whether or not she would change her nationality

- She said no she wouldn't. She practices in Florida but will always be a Czech. She wants to play for Czech Republic in FedCup, Olympics, etc. She is proud of her country and honored to play for Czech Republic. She said will represent Czech Republic in 2008 Beijing Games if they nominate her and the interviewer said I'm sure they will nominate you.:p

The interviewer commented on Nicole being beautiful and being able to speak several languages. She was asked about becoming an star like Maria, etc (Nicole thought she said pop idol and answered with "I can't sing")

- She said right now shes focusing on climbing the rankings and doing well in the Slams but doing off court things is always fun.

Nicole also talks about the Chinese New Year/fans/coming back to China again, NYC being her fav city, etc...

Not much of anything new but a nice video:)

Anyway,Nicole lost and I'm a bit disppointed but that's only her first match and it doesn't mean that it starts bad for her.Honestly,I prefer she lost here and now she will focus on the real schedule and be ready to the Ao by playing Sydney.
The tomorrow match against Zheng will be interesting to show how Nicole feels. But,exhibition is not something which show how was her game if she was playing a real tournement.I really don't think she was playing her best!I'm just waiting Sydney to see if it was a real upset.

Wake up Nici!

I just saw the Highlights.I think,it's very interesting, she came to the net more than one time.

You can explain her early lose by the fact that Nicole is changing a little bit her game and the way she plays. Maybe varied and try news things.

If it's really that,I'm very confident and happy.

Let her the time to put her game on. (I don't know if we can say that in English..........).

For her serve,I really don't know what happens.Apparently, she did a lot of DF.

WATSONS WATER CHAMPIONS CHALLENGE (Hong Kong; outdoor hard; exhibition)
================================= http://www.watsonswaterchallenge.com/ (http://www.watsonswaterchallenge.com/)

Nicole Vaidišová [EF]:
qf - ELENA DEMENTIEVA [4], 6-3 3-6 2-6
Silver Group sf - Yan,Zi [s], 5-7 3-6

A disappointingly winless start to the year (and no mouthwatering semi-final against Maria Sharapova (http://geocities.com/andrewbroad/tennis/shara/)) for Nicole, who may have been affected by a cut on the middle finger of her left hand.

-------
Doubles (Wednesday 3rd January)
-------

Nicole pulled out of this event - in which she was set to partner Elena Dementieva - on Wednesday.

Tournament-director Terry Catton: "Nicole slipped in the shower and cut a finger on her left hand. The cut affects the way she can play her double-handed backhand. The tournament-doctor recommends she withdraws from the doubles. However, she feels she should be fit to play in the singles tomorrow."

It may sound like a strange injury, but Nicole was very lucky. When Fred Perry slipped in the shower, he broke four ribs... and died.

-------------
Quarter-final (Thursday 4th January)
-------------

- Nicole Vaidišová [EF] lt. ELENA DEMENTIEVA [4], 6-3 3-6 2-6

A reasonable performance, taking a set off the world #8 (who, in turn, took a set off the great Maria Sharapova (http://geocities.com/andrewbroad/tennis/shara/) in the semis - I wish Nicole could have met Maria in the semis!).

This compares favourably with their only meeting on the WTA Tour to date: Tokyo Pan Pacific Open 2006, where Nicole lost 6-3 1-6 2-6.

I've often wondered why big servers like Maria and Nicole struggle as much as they do against Dementieva and her weak sliced serve, which produces so many double faults at key moments, and can only go to the right-hander's forehand. I think Dementieva makes up for it with her unusual ability to neutralise her opponent's initiative early in the rally, as well as superior fitness and a great crosscourt forehand.

Nicole hit 6 aces, 11 double faults (which is abysmal), and a W:UE ratio of 24:17.

I take it Nicole is still using the abbreviated swing on her serve that she had to introduce last summer because of her shoulder-injury!

-----------------------
Silver Group semi-final (Friday 5th January)
-----------------------

- Nicole Vaidišová [EF] lt. Yan,Zi [s], 5-7 3-6

Obviously a very disappointing result ahead of the Australian Open, losing to this #166-ranked doubles-specialist.

But Yan gave Maria a tough match in the previous round, fighting back from breaks down in both sets of Maria's 7-5 6-3 victory. Perhaps she's ready to take on the world at singles now?

I always thought Yan was a Selesian (two hands on both sides), but the photos from Hong Kong show her hitting one-handed forehands, and www.wtatour.com (http://www.wtatour.com) currently describes her playing-style as "Right-handed (two-handed backhand)" - so perhaps she is a lapsed Selesian?
