I've seen the movie and loved it. I think both Jennifer and Eddie Murphy should both get recognized for their performances. I went in seeing the movie thinking that it was mostly centered around Beyonce, who did a really good job by the way, but it wasn't. There's more emphasis on Effie White (the character played by Hudson). They did a good job of integrating the songs into the movie, better than Chicago did IMO. It's not a musical in the traditional sense and because they're playing the part of singers, most of the songs are showcased in a natural stage setting. Loreta Devine (one of the original dreamgirls from broadway) had a small cameo- that was nice to see. I'm already looking forward to seeing with friends when it comes out.

frankly, if j-hud does not get a nod for the oscars (which, i personally think is unlikely seeing that this is her first movie), i hope it leads her to all the big things in hollywood. that would be the only way to shut Sam L's, uhm the hater's mouths.

Did you pay $25 to see it? I know starting Dec. 15th they are going to screen the movie at select theatres complete with souvenir booklet and a special view of the tour stage.

Also, I think many people assumed the film would be about Deena's character, but Effie has always been the real star of the stage play. I think anyone who got that part had to do it justice because the role is very important.

Whats so good about Jen Hudson's performance that will merit an oscar or even a nomination, im not bashing or anything i just wanna know why alot of people are saying she will cause it seems that someone in their 1st major part gets an oscar

Being able to steal scenes from as Oscar winner for one. She became the role, and she left no mind in HARDCORE Dreamgirls fans' minds, that her performance was one the best musical roles EVER.

Tatum O'Neal's first role was in Paper Moon, she was nominated for a best supporting actress oscar and won at like 10 or 11. Another one is Marlee Matlin for Children of a Lessor God and Barbara Streisand in Funny Girl.

lenavee, are you aware of the Oscar process? Buzz is the name of the game and how the studio promotes/campaign for each actor has some effect on the outcome.

Jennifer is recieving the same type of buzz others before her have recieved. It's not anything new or different than what's been happening for years. Her performance has been recieving rave reviews, it doesn't necessarily mean she will win but being nominated is an honor also.

Most of the public(non-insiders) can't really comment on her performance because most haven't seen the movie yet. ;)

I personally don't see this movie as an Oscar winner perhaps a nod but not a winner. Personally to me it seems too light but then again Chicago won and other light/fun movies have won/got recognition. I will go see it. I will however have a problem if Beyonce or even J-Hud get a nod for singing. I mean if they just stand around and sing great(which both do) and get a nod I will have a problem because an oscar is about acting, not about singing, however, if they are able to bring other emotional elements, facial expressions etc. I'm sure this movie will be a blast.

Evryone knows this hasn't been a good year for movies of quality. babel was s*it and nothing else has really lived up to the hype except maybe The Departed and The Queen which no one was hyping really before their release.so hopefully this won't be a big flop and deliver becausI've been waiting for ever to see a realy hyped up movie and have it deliver.

If Chicago can be nominated and recieve critical acclaim so can Dreamgirls. Many of the Oscar voters are very familiar with the stage play considering it was one of the most popular shows on Broadway.

I am not saying it will win, but their is always the possibility. The movie should pick up a few nods.:wavey:

Excellent job on misrepresenting Beyonce's actual quote. The little snippet you posted is actually a very deceptive version of her remarks.

Here is a more accurate version:

http://www.eurweb.com/story/eur30129.cfm

On Saturday Beyonce told EUR and other media outlets that she has no ill-will toward Hudson, who plays the meatier role of Effie White in the film.

"I knew that the character that I played wasn't the star," Beyonce said of her role as Deena. "She wasn't the underdog. She didn't have the struggle and the pain and the dramatic scenes that Effie had, and I was fine with that."

Beyonce said that taking the lesser role of Deena was all about establishing herself as a dramatic actress.

"I'm already a star. I already have nine Grammys. Everyone knows I can sing," she told People. "I did this because I wanted people to know that I can act and I can play someone so different from myself."

Directly addressing the rumors of jealousy towards Hudson, Beyonce said:

"It's really unfortunate that everyone is saying I'm jealous of Jennifer. It hurts my heart because it's so clichéd. … They're saying that I'm mad when I knew going into this that I was playing Deena. Because I'm a star they just automatically assume that I'm not humble enough to sit down and take a back seat, which I am."

"Jennifer Hudson had such a pressure, first of all, never being in a film and never have done an album and still having to live up to those expectations," Beyonce continued. "She did incredible."

And as for playing the role of Effie, Beyonce has stated the following:

http://www.contactmusic.com/news.nsf/article/beyonce%20wanted%20bigger%20dreamgirls%20role_1015 630

The IRREPLACEABLE singer admits she would have loved to have sung Effie's show-stopping number AND I AM TELLING YOU I'M NOT GOING, and would have gladly gained weight for the role. Instead she lost weight to play DEENA in the movie. She explains, "I wish I could have gained 20 pounds (nine kilograms) and played Effie. I absolutely would have, but Bill didn't even believe that I could be Deena. So imagine if I would've said, 'Bill, I want to be Effie.' But Knowles has high praise for her co-star's performance adding, "Jennifer Hudson had such pressure. First of all, never being in a film and never having done an album and still having to live up to those expectations, she did incredible."

BTW anyone who wants to submit to recieve two free tickets to a special screening(in select cities and not in just NYC,LA,SanFran I'm in Atlanta I think like Boston, Chicago, Houston etc.) Entertainment Weekly's website has a competition for those tickets. Just go to their website. Going back, Goldie Hawn won for Catcus Flower her first movie.

Pretty Simple: Holiday was originally Effie on stage and Hudson on film over twenty years later.

I just saw Dreamgirls tonight..... from the opening credits, I was IN AWE of Bill Condon's creativity. It was VISUALLY and AUDIBLY ORGASMIC .

The songs (of COURSE) were GREAT and the acting was surprisingly good. Beyonce' did an admirable job as Deena, but Jennifer Hudson WAS the movie. From START to finish, I found myself anticipating her screentime, and waiting for her to come back on. She steals the scenes that she's in, and she steals your thoughts when she's not on screen. She's enchantingly good...too good for her first film.

Condon did an EXCELLENT job turning this "untrained" actress into a BONAFIDE STAR. Annika Noni Rose does a GREAT job as well in the role of Lorrell and Eddie Murphy is GOLDEN as Jimmy Early. Jaime is good as well as the villian Curtis and Keith Robinson plays an outstanding C.C. There really are NO words! This MOVIE will BLOW you AWAY.

Forget about everything you've seen, heard or read. This is different from the play, and I like that because it's not like their trying to re-do it. They're leaving it as it's own entity. I liked and respected that. I wish they would have done more backgroud, and made it more of an emotional story instead of a razzle-dazzle show-pic. I dunno, and even saying that, I feel nit-picky.

The movie was GREAT the way it is, and Jennifer Hudson DEFINATELY deserves EVERY accolade she's received. Oprah wasn't lying when she said listening to JHud was a RELIGOUS experience :worship:. During, "And I'm Telling You," (SO WHAT if it wasn't the same as Jennifer Holliday's  ) people were SERIOUSLY crying, and when it was over she got a STANDING ovation in the theatre (same as I'm Changing, One Night Only and Listen. They all got standing ovations).

 It was AMAZING, and when it comes out in 8 days, I'm going to see it again, and I reccommend WHOLEHEARTEDLY that you see it too! You'll LOVE IT!
