Maria can still win a thrid grand slam prior to her 20th birthday if she wins the 2007 Australian Open. The media and public have been really hard on this girl. For starters Maria won the US OPEN fair and square she deserves a lot of credit for coming through and proving she is no fluke one slam wonder. The girl is the real deal. Yes its dissapointing she lost today because lets face it Maria is the face of the WTA. It would of been incredible that a teenager had finished no.1 in the world at the end of the year. This year it didn't happen. However, this is not the end of the world. I still believe that Maria will get the no.1 ranking back because now it's going to make her even more hungry. The loss today just demonstrates how tough the top 5 of the WTA truly is. There is no one woman that is supreme the top 5 is very volatile right now. Anyone of the top 5 can win slams. Next year, who knows what's going to happen? But the great thing is all the top women will be very hungry for that Australian Open final. I thniik the WTA did a smart thing moving the year end championships to Europe. The Europeans really appreciate women's tennis. And I hope they continue with this event in Europe smart move on the WTA part. The Americans they are used to seeing the top players all the time with the old Masters event in NYC and LA. Its nice to see the year end event in Europe and its a fantastic event.

If the AO winner is Maria/Justine/Amelie, the winner will probably be #1 since the winner now has 1000 pts (700 in 2006).

Amelie won the title last year she has to defend all those points. The only way Amelie can get back to no.1 early next year would be if she won Sydney and also won another event like Gold Coast or Hobart in Australia or New Zealand to add points. She can't add points at the Australian Open because she is the defending champion.
