in an interview, it turned out that she did not remember who finished the last season as the No.1 player
she added that people in general do not pay so much attention to the year-end No.1 and focus on who was No.1 throughout the season
... and then a couple of days later she said that it's her biggest dream to finish the year as the No.1
fortunately, this was not about to happen ;)

I believe that she really may not remember because obviously she has problems with memory and senses:

When Tati was injured, she did not see.

When she received a warning for her father's coaching, she said she did not hear.

When the ball touched her racket in her match against Svetlana, she did not feel.

When asked about last year's no 1, she said she does not remember.

All these examples prove that she should see a neurologist for loss of sense and memory.

As in your case if you leave vegetables and herbs on your plate, your brain doesn't function properly. ;)

she was in contention for it till the last minute, so of course she will. ;)

last year, she couldn't care less. no excitement to it whatsoever.

Exactly, why should she remember it when she wasn't in contention for it? She has a lot more on her plate to do and think about than worrying about who's number one while everyone is on vacation.

EXACTLY!...rolling your eyes at me when that was my exact point. Why would she care about it? I don't remember having this bruhaha over year-end number 1 at the YEC last year anyway. My brother even asked me today who ended number one last year.

She only remembers the stuff she wants to remember....like who won Wimbledon and YEC in 2004, was No 1 at 18 and won USO in 2006.

I seriously think next year she will say she forgot who ended the year as No 1.
