It wasn't Steffi who was a cheater it was actually Martina for crossing over to Steffi's side of the court to argue with the umpire about the mark. That is not allowed according to the rules.

In terms of quality, this match is not even top 10. Graf was 10 years away from her peak year (she won Grand Slam in '88, this was '99) and just one month before her retirement. She no longer played with her peak intensity but won because Hingis broke down.

In terms of drama, though, it's certainly top 3. All because of hingis' bratty behavior, like walking over to her opponent's court to "check the mark", climbing the chair to "talk to the umpire", the underarmed serve, etc. And the French crowd booed her like there's no tomorrow.

pooh14
Nov 11th, 2006, 06:47 AM
i think this match is best in term of drama.
i do not think any much as dramatic as this in the finals of a Grand Slam. I wonder where did Hingis leave her brain during this match....
And every year since then during RG, this match would pop up again.

Anyway, i so badly want her to win RG more so after this match.

i believe fans voted this in 2003 as the best match but critics voted for the 1992 French Open Final as the best match of the last 30 years.

What a way to end a career! French Open being the first and last of Steffi's 22 Slams. Except perhaps Agassi at the U.S. Open, has there been any match that showed how much the fans care about their chosen champion?

Martina´s bad Karma came back to her in this match

she shouldn´t had called Steffi "to old and not fast enough for the tour" few month before
and i think this is the reason why she lost this match, she was fucking afraid to lose against "a slow and old Steffi"

For anyone who is a Martina fan like I am, this is difficult to watch. But, it is still a GREAT match. Hingis, Graf, French Open. Wow.

I kinda like Martina Hingis, more so these days than then when she was a bratty kid. Well, that's just life. She was a kid, that's all. Her speech at the end said it all: that she wanted to win that day and that it was particularly hard because she was too close. She was three points away! Steffi said that she shouldn't worry because she was young and would have many more chances. Seeing as it is now that she hasn't win RG yet 7 years after, I'd still love to see her get it before she retires. I hope then she'll have the crowd by her side.
But for Graf fan, to watch your fave rise above the odds and get the recognition she so deserves, it was more than heartwarming. It was a magnificent thing to watch that final :)

How wrong she can be. Hingis hasn't won a slam ever since.

Really, I was very disappointed about Graf's behaviour that day.
First, that line call. It was a disgrace. Graf could/should easily point out the mark.
Then, the whining about the underhanded serve, "are we playing tennis or what ?!". What makes this worse was, when she was asked about it during the post-match interview, she pretend she was all cool about that, acting like a gracious champion. Yeah right !
And to top it off, she whored herself out during the trophy ceremony with "I feel French !". PPPuuuuLLLeaasse !!!! So cheap !!
All in all Graf didnt show her best sight that day.

But still, Hingis only has herself to blame. Insane brainfart.
Heh well, I've always disliked Hingis, so in the end, it's allright.

I agree hingie, this certainly can't be considered for the "tennis" calibre shown...its more of a psychological let-down a player can have when seemingly holding the match in her hand..Martina as an 18 year old at the time already had won 5 GS's...she was used to having and getting her own way...so while the mental part of her game oozed confidence....she lacked immaturity big time....she knew she was right about the call...but a more exerienced player would have moved on...bad calls are a part of the game...but insolence, petulance and lack of respect for her opponent and the officials led to her downfall..all Graf had to do after Martina's public "meltdown" was to wait patiently for her to disintegrate and that she did bigtime....Martina couldn't handle the pressure of being "booed" by the French crowd nor could she control her emotions and in her own words after crying on her mom's shoulder said after watching the replay "What a baby!" Martina they say has been "cursed" since that unfortunate display of pettiness..although she captured a GS this year with mixed doubles partner Bhupathi and also won a couple of GS doubles with Anna K., in singles she seems to jinx herself for instance, when leading 6-4 and 4-0 in the 2nd set against Capriati at AO in 2002, went on to blow 4 championship points and lose the set, game and match in the torrid heat of AO that day!
No, I've certainly seen better tennis matches than RG'99...Graf was the winner that day....but Martina lost more than a match!

Steffi said that she shouldn't worry because she was young and would have many more chances.

Its funny how quickly things can change. Life has a habit of throwing curve-balls. Martina got what she deserved, and I was really happy that steffi could sign-off in style, but looking back on what she said about Martina makes me feel sad. Martina said that steffi was too old and slow for the game, but it was martina who was left behind by the game.
I hope she gets back to her best, and wins another slam someday. Let bygones be bygones I say.

The greatest is probaby the Graf - ASV French open final, which had a crucial game in the final set that lasted 20 minutes. Can't remember the year.

You're thinking of the 1995 Wimbledon final between Graf and Sanchez-Vicario that produced the pivotal game featuring 32 deuces at 5-5 in the third set. (The 1996 French Open final between Graf and Sanchez-Vicario went to 10-8 in the third set, but without the drama of the Wimbledon final.)

I will never forgive Graf for this match. She saw that ball land right on the line and didn't say a word :o

- first of all, it's the work of the line judges and the umpires !!!
everyone knows that, in this game, bad calls happen all the time ; bad calls are a part of the game and so all players must handle and cope with !

- secondly, hingis was not in danger : she was leading 64 20 ... she had to concentrate and to move on ... but she made the bad choice : crossed over to steffi's side of the court (she knows the rules) and argued a too long time with the umpire about the mark
result : the crowd booed her and then the crowd became, all the way, supportive of steffi
=> and hingis' mental felt apart

- and then thirdly, she had qualified steffi to be "too old for the game", i was that day, like the french crowd, really happy that steffi won that match

in 3 or 4 years, hingis will have the same age that steffi had in 1999 ...
i wonder and i'm curious to know how will hingis react (and especially what will be hingis fans' reaction) if a young player (18-19 year old by 2010), in an interview, treats her as "too old" to play ?

=> the hingis fans had to blame hingis herself and should be more disappointed about hingis' childish reaction and behaviour

Kworb
Nov 13th, 2006, 02:23 PM
It was not childish behavior, it was an intelligent person baffled by how stupid everyone was at that moment.

There's no doubt Hingis should have just moved on. She probably would have a FO crown if she did. BUT Anne Lassere-Ullrich was a disgrace to the game on that day. Looking for the ball mark over a metre from where it landed - what a joke!

The press voted for the 1992 final as the best women's match and the fans voted for the 1999 final. To be quite honest, if I had to go solely by the quality of tennis, I'd have picked the 1986 US semis (Navratilova d. Graf 6-1 6-7 7-6) as the best women's match (that I've seen) of the Open Era.
