The first time I have seen growth in Justine this year, she loses a match she should have win.
Justine's approach shot on her forehand was so fluid, as fluid as I have ever seen from her.
She came to net more than usual.

Mauresmo's slice backhand was as bad as I have seen from her. It wasn't getting low as it should have.
She found a way to win though. Net cords be damn.
She still found a way to win.

The matches here just keep getting better through the week. I wanted Justine to win but credit to Amelie for playing really well. (Lucky net cords too! :p )

After Amelie's first match against Nadia I didn't foresee Amelie winning the group and Nadia coming last but that's the fun of round robin.

So if Maria wins her group then she will play Justine in the semis for the number one ranking if what I hear is correct. Can't wait.

Idiot!

Nadal has beaten Federer 3 times, does that mean Nadal deserves the #1 position more than Federer? What an effin' idiot

There are other matches apart from Henin-Hardenne-v-Mauresmo, and as Justine has a better win-loss record than Amelie, that's why Justine deserves it more than Amelie ... the same applies to Nadal and Fed.

Yeah, she just had a really bad day... it happens. She just wasn't here! But Sharapova played a very good match too.
It's actually funny to read that some of you are surprised to see Amelie actually play great tennis. Yes she can have very bad days, but when she's on..... she gives incredible performances. Remember last year YEC against Pierce?
It's probably where it all started. Since that day she's been winning matches she was losing before against the likes of JHH, Clijsters, Williams...

Looks like someone is having fun. Good for you.
Just a few thoughts :
- Since when losing a set 6-0 was that big of a shame? As long as you win the match.... Remember? She won... and that #95 player was Serena Williams who though she hadnt played for months had just taken out Ivanovic...
- It was not a 6-0 6-0 drubbing, but a 6-0 4-6 6-0 loss. If you cant see the difference, you have a problem.
If you wanna take a player down, please at least be precise.

Let's just clear up a few things here shall we.

Anybody who saw tonights match would have been impressed by the level of tennis shown by both women. I have never seen Justine lose a match in which she produced some of the best tennis of her life. Her ground strokes were unbelievable and I'm bamboozled as to how on earth Amélie stayed with her but that just shows how tough and how much more mature Amélie is these days.

As for the no.1 ranking I think Justine deserves it more than Maria for the incredible season she's had - 4 slam finals is amazing but I guarantee you any of the pro female players would swap their season for what Amélie achieved. 2 Grand Slam titles including the most prestigous title of them all, Wimbledon, guarantees that she will be immortalised in the sport.

Roll on 2007 because it will be so exciting with so many great players vying for those Slams!

:yeah:

Aranxta Sanchez-Vicario (French Open final 1998) and Steffi Graf (US Open final 1995) lost also a set 6:0 in those matches (and both to Monica Seles), but won in the end. Losing a set to love is of course not something you can be found of. The end result counts.

Wow, that was a classy match. They both played awesome! :worship:
Anybody who saw tonights match would have been impressed by the level of tennis shown by both women. I have never seen Justine lose a match in which she produced some of the best tennis of her life. Her ground strokes were unbelievable and I'm bamboozled as to how on earth Amélie stayed with her but that just shows how tough and how much more mature Amélie is these days.
:worship: :worship:

I was like, hey almost no one mentioned the incredible quality of the match, but then I read this post. Looked slam quality to me.

Who needs a forehand to win a match .
That said, some of Justine's forehand winners  :worship:.
At first I was  tactically it looked a nightmare for Amélie, Justine was bombing her forehand, forehand against forehand it's 1 and 2 for Juju.
But then Amélie remembered the high backhand-topspin trick, began attacking deep enough so she could run to the net, focused like it was the last match of her career's best year, and scraped through the 2nd set. The third, a completely different story: maybe Justine didn't want to get too tired.

Amelie's beaten HINGIS 3 consecutive times since her comeback.
(I like) you like to point that out :) ;)

As far as I know, they both made each over 100 points! It was a match that proved again how good both players are and how well they dominated the tour this year.

I think JHH won 100 pts, and Momo 3 more.

 , not at the fact that Henin lost, at the fact that Hingis doesnt qualify.

What a great match :) Excellent to watch even if it was a little disappointing in the end... I love Martina but I'm very happy with the effort that Justine put in today - she played great but Amelie was too good. It was never Justine's fault anyway - it's not good to rely on other players. Martina had her chance against Amelie yesterday and played brilliantly until the effects of her previous two 3 setters began to take their toll. Maybe Martina could try to work on her stamina over the next two months - the rest of her game is looking good.

Sigh.... I think it's not entirely Justine to blame!!.

Good luck for all semifinal players. It becomes very interesting though. Because unexpectedly Juju will play Sharpie and Momo got Kim.

Absolutely FANTASTIC match, couldn't take my eyes off of it for one second. I even almost burned my lunch. :D
I'm a "would-be" JHH fan. She is very impressive. Some of her shots are out of this world. Just too controversial and suspect for my liking.
Amelie :worship: what can I say. I like her more and more each time I have the pleasure of watching her :yeah:

Granted, the match at times wasn't pretty, and yes, JHH gave up sometime after the middle of the final set. But it's always nice to see the top two players of the season play such a tight match. They're good matchups for each other; the basics of their games are much the same (good serve, mobility and versatility to play an all-court game) but from then on the differences begin: JHH is more aggressive and packs more firepower, which allows her to finish points faster from the baseline, while Mauresmo is more athletic and has the stamina that allows her to patiently construct points and dig in, defend relentlessly and eventually outlast her opponent - which was what happened today again.

Nonetheless, I expect the whining and bitching about the "lack of rivalries" on the women's Tour to continue because JHH and Mauresmo aren't American and don't make good copy by talking shit like Hingis.

Correction. Martina can't make it to the semis because of H-E-R-S-E-L-F. She was the O-N-E who L-O-S-T against Amélie and Juju.Don't try to reason with a delusional fan. If Martina had wanted a semifinal spot badly enough, she wouldn't have lost to Justine and/or Amelie.

Slightly disappointed cause Hingis did not make it.
Yes, Hingis should control destiny herself, but she had a cruel schedule, which I think no players can take it. Even Momo said she took advantage of Hingis's tiredness after the first set.
But then...that's tennis. You need a combination of good game, plus good schedule and also luck. Hingis had been unlucky a few times this year, in RG, in US Open and also now here. But Momo had her fair share of bad luck and finally this year she had a breakthrough year and deserve it.

One more thing which makes me sad also is because now maria had a higher chance of finishing #no1. Looking at the form, she can beat justine currrently.

All in all, i think all these 4 players, Amelie, Justine, Maria and Martina - had a great season. All these players made the season interesting to watch. Amelie, Justine, Maria for their great game this year, Hingis for the great comeback which made everything interesting.

I´ll hate JHH forever!!

Yeah, blame it on Justine then....

Some of you Martina fans should look at the bigger picture... whose fault was it for not defeating Momo in the 1st place, and then have to rely on others to do the job for them?

Congrats Amelie! I thought she was dunzo after losing the first set (and was up a break in the first set)

Nice Choke Justine!!! Agh, now Martina can't make it to the semis because of you, grrrr. But thanks for trying, I guess.

Congrats Mauresmo! It is hard to argue that Justine deserves the number 1 over her now that Mauresmo has beaten her THREE times.

Whoever ends the year ranked #1 (which will be a player that has won a grand slam singles title in 2006), deserves to be number one. Anything else said is pure bullshit.

I wanted Martina to go through but I'm not blaming Justine. I agree that you should try to qualify yourself - not rely on others.

But having said that are you denying that there is an advantage in playing the best player in your group as your last match (or 2nd best if you are the best). Because if it is a dead match for the other player - you have a greater chance of winning against that player which increases you chances of qualifying.

I'd hope you can see the "bigger picture" as well.
