Maria Sharapova - needs to play Fed Cup in both 2007 and 2008 in order to play Olympics :o (obvious that this is the only reason she is playing in 2007)

Sveta Kuznetsova - needs to play Fed Cup in both 2007 and 2008 in order to play Olympics :o (obvious that this is the only reason she is playing in 2007)

Nadia Petrova - played Fed Cup in 2006. weaseled her way onto the 2007 team to qualify for Beijing despite her chickening out against Kim Clijsters in a crucial tie

Elena Dementieva - played Fed Cup in 2005, 2006 = ELIGABLE :hearts:

Dinara Safina - played Fed Cup in 2005, 2006 = ELIGABLE :D

Anna Chakvetadze - played Fed Cup in 2006. needs to play in either 2007 or 2008 to be eligable

Anastasia Myskina - played Fed Cup in 2005. needs to play in either 2007 or 2008 to be eligable but may retire before Beijing anyway

Maria Kirilenko - played Fed Cup in 2006. needs to play in either 2007 or 2008 to be eligable

Elena Vesnina - played Fed Cup in 2006. needs to play in either 2007 or 2008 to be eligable

Vera Dushevina - played Fed Cup in 2005, 2006 = ELIGABLE

Elena Bovina - played Fed Cup in 2005. needs to play in either 2007 or 2008 to be eligable but must overcome injuries

pierce1424214 and goldenlox would make a great combo. How about playing mixed doubles for Russia in Hopman cup 2008? :hehehe:

Sveta played Fed Cup in 2004 and Hopman Cup in 2006.
So it's not unusual for her to be playing Fed Cup.
It's different from Sharapova.

tough going there.
I think Safina will get the doubles spot.

Vera Z should be on that list also. She's a good doubles player.
She played singles in the final on the 2003 team, and won the final match in the 2004 final with Nastya.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I thought the eligibility rule was as follows:

The player has to play Fed Cup in two years out of 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2008. At least one of those two years has to be either 2007 or 2008.

Therefore currently no players are eligible.

Is it play or just make themselves available?

you dont have to play
its just making themselves available that gets you eligibilty for the Olympics.

There are so many good players who aren't on the team playing Spain.
So if Nastya, Vera Z., Dinara, Anna C, Vera D, Lena V, Lena B, Maria K
If they make themselves available for Spain, that's all they have to do for 2007?

Olympic tennis fact sheet (http://www.itftennis.com/shared/medialibrary/pdf/original/IO_21709_original.PDF)

I think you can debate what it means to "make yourself available for selection".

I thought players only needed to make themselves available to play Fed Cup so they would be eligible to play in the Olympics. Isn't that the case GL?

can't they only have 4 players in the olympics? if so and the majority of the players make themselves eligible/available or whatever, who would they chose?
i reckon sharapova, petrova, kuznetsova and safina. what do other people think?

Yes, if the rules from Athens 2004 still apply, each country can have maximum of 4 singles and 2 teams of doubles. Also, with a few exceptions (wildcard spots giving to underrepresented countries), the priority of entry is based on WTA ranking. In 2004, Tarpishev chose the 4 singles entries based on WTA ranking, too.

I hope Chakvetadze+Vesnina make the doubles team. Chaky can play singles as well.
