'02 was really good, because the Belgians were quite good by then, plus V/S. This year is quite strong too.

um, 2001 and 2002 had 16 player fields. those were the days of just the plain old bracket YECs.

I was just going to say that. So I'd say those fields were better because they had a higher number of players where there was a chance for more upsets. But I do understand the purpose of RR.

2002 was pretty good, especially that terrific Capriati/S Williams semifinal. Too bad that physical match prevented Serena from playing her best in the final.

i knew 2002 would be the pick for people.
now, look carefully - read "field"
there is no possible way anyone could say the 2006 field isn't the best ever for the purpose of this tourny - the year end top8 tourny.
i mean, of course - a field of Graf, Nav, Seles, Evert, Sabatini, Hingis, ASV and Austin would be better players in all - Peshke-Sugiyama would make the greatest match if it were the final of 2005, but the question wasn't about best tourny by matches nor all time greatness - it was about the field, and i cannot see how the top8 all making it, when it was clear for weeks that they would be there (as opposed to years when the last few spots were last minute calls) means the trule best8 of the year are in, and even if it would completly suck from now on (a bit so far, i admit) it's still best of the 6. look at the 2002 rankings and you'll understand better.
but of course - it's the best one williams, dokic, hantuchova fans are gunna pick.

Lindsay was there, just wasn't seeded. i would pick 2002, you had the Williams sisters, Belgians, Jennifer, Lindsay, Seles, Dokic and Hantuchova.

2006. 6 GS champions.

2002. 2001 could have had a great final, tho.

The YEC has sucked since 2000.

2006 cannot be considered a strong field not because the top 8 qualified but taking into account that the players like lindsay, serena and venus weren't fit enough to challenge for those positions this year too. Kim and hingis did extremely well to qualify but putting in only one good half season shows that it was a fairly weakened field all year. Even of those who qualified like justine, it was still a sporadic season ruined by injuiries.

Ye but Amelie, Kuzzy and Elena, come on, you can't compare them to the likes of Davenport and Capriati. I mean Kuzzy and Elena are just ridiculously inconsistent they can only win slams when playing against each other. They are not the champions Capriati and Davenport, Serena or Venus are. None of the three I mentioned have a cats in hells chance to be honest to win. They would be destroyed by Maria, Justine, Kim (yes even Kim in present condition). Whereas on their day Capriati and Davenport were more than capable of upstaging greats like Serena and Venus. As was Kim see the 2002 final:rolleyes:

I think it's definitely between 2002 and 2006 YECS, 2002 is probably slightly more competitive with a stronger field. THat's why I voted for it :)

Amelie can have good runs where she can beat a lot of players. But if you look at who she beat to win it last year, the only really impressive, world beater win for me was against Mary in the final:worship: The rest weren't really of the calibre of 2002. Saying that the 2005 YECs were really good and Amelie played so well in them :)

You could say that in terms of star power that 2002 was better. But if you look at rank and Grand Slam titles, you would say that 2006 is way better, I think!

2002 was the bomb. i always love the YEC and I feel like the only one... i don't get it. 2000 was amazing as well!

seriously, enough with that crap. Serena was fit as a fiddle. i mean, that was probably the best shape she'd ever been in and playing 3 gruelling sets of tennis was nothing for her.

Venus and Serena at their bests (well, not that far off)
Capriati during her best period

This year, also 2002 was quite good!

Though I miss those epic finals, like in '96!

True, it hardly helped though did it:rolleyes:

It still is the only time Serena has lost to Kim. It was a combination of Serena not playing her best, seeming a little lacklustre and kim just playing really well too.

2006 even though you have some players coming in off injuries and possibly not playing their best

2006 is a good field, but you are missing three (maybe four) MASSIVE names: Davenport, Venus, Serena (capriati being the forth!)

The overall potential of 'what it could be' outweighs what the actual field is now.
