Ouch, 16 DFs :o

Of course you can't give that many free points to Maria, so there was always only going to be one winner.

Too bad most of the match wasn't as a good as the final point :(

Absolutely awful from Dementieva. I think next year will be bad for Dementieva unless she hires a full-time qualified coach. Enough with this Vera bullshit.

i know. i only saw the first set and they were being called all the time. but 16 doubles is bad, even by lena's standards. still i predicted 6-1, 6-3, so i was only 1 game off.

Lena! I swear if there's someone I don't like seeing Maria beating on it's you. But you aren't gonna give yourself much of a chance against Masha if you're serving df after df...16 dfs in total. :help:

What happened to Maria in the second set? 42% 1st serve? And no ace in the whole match? That's unacceptable. Fortunately Dememtieva played worse than her, a win is a win, but she has to paly better tomorrow against Clijsters.

Dumbo Lena!
Sharapova was very vulnerable the whole 2nd set, her 1st serve pct was below the floor and you could not take advantage of it! No way Maria will beat Clijsters, too many cakes and schnitzels took their toll, Sharapova looks to have gained few extra kilos. So, ever running Kim will beat the crap out of her!

It's like she doesn't believe she can beat Sharapova. The scoreline's always like this. And she definately can, I saw glimmers of hope in the match when she completely overpowered Maria from the baseline (hard to do).
In any case, it's been a disappointing morning for my faves. First Amelie, now Lena. I'm not holding on to much hope with Martina now.

oh...i see. I'M the crazy one.

did you see the same match i saw?
elena just got crushed in straight sets against sharapova.
sharapova was playing at about 30% of her true potential.
and you mean to tell me that elena isn't in a decline?
she served 16 double faults in one match!

yeah, okay.

i'm a huge fan, i love elena, but you're just delusional if you think i'm crazy for making a valid statement.

sub-par match. Masha was lucky she got thru unscathed, thx to Elena's equally crappy play.
Ah well... reminds me of USO... Masha against Li was terrible, but she raised it up to win the tourny so pls do just that Masha!

Elena :tape: well what can I say? This was your big chance to beat Masha when she's playing like that but you just turned up even worse... oh well...

they both played a poor match, its not lena lena played decent and Sharapova played really bad but still won in straights they both player poorly but Sharapova won cause she has the better serve, lena has lost lots of matches like this even in 04 when she was getting to slam finals and in 03 before she won her 1st title she was losing to players like Pratt in Straight sets :help:, she still has the fight in her and the groundies but shes going through a rough patch since the USO really, plus this tournie isint over yet she still has a chance to win a match at least, i mean it cant get much worse than she played today, she cant serve much worse she just needs to string it together

kundalini
Nov 7th, 2006, 07:56 PM
Either Lena gets her serve sorted out or she's just not going to be competitive at this level. The second set was really close and even a half decent serve would have at least got her to a tiebreak.

First serve percentage was 43% in the first set and the second set was even worse. 38% overall.

Could have been an interesting match had Lena taken it to a third set. Instead it was embarrassing.

Well done Maria :yeah: not one of your best victories but a win is a win & at least she is on the right path 2 claim year-end no.1 glory unlike amelie & 2 reach the semis.

yeah, so let's recap all the things elena couldn't do.

hold serve when it matters
serve correctly at all
not double fault
not foot fault

----

and she's not fighting...if she was truly intending to fight, she wouldn't double fault. patting it over at 60mph is better than just conceding points. that was a pathetic display and as i said, maria was playing at 30%. if one didn't see the match, someone would say elena was totally crushed. and that's what happened. so if elena can't even steal a set off of maria at 30%, how does she expect to stay top 10? ever since that loss to jankovic, she has not been the same.

I do agree with what your saying that she hasnt been the same since USO or even after winning LA, she wasnt really crushed in the 2nd set and it was only because of the serve, she has good and bad days on the serve and she was unlucky that one of her really bad days happened today

You try going to the net when someone as powerful as Sharapova is whacking the ball right back at you. It's the reason why Hingis was never able to get to net as much as she could, because the power players wont' let her approach it.

Elena's DF's seemed to come from trying too hard to put in a good serve on Pova. Good strategy but it didn't work. On the other hand when she did just spin the second serve in, Pova wacked it. So what could Elena do?

Pova's serve didn't come through for her today at all!

The last point of the match was really spectacular! That point makes this match the best of the day. Elena fought hard in the second set but came up horribly short.

Nadia totally dominated Ame similar to the way Davenport does. No mercy.

JHH crushed Hingis completely and absolutely but took the second set off out of pity, I guess.

Maria didn´t hit a lot of winners but she looked solid in the first set. Elena is so quick and got her racket on many of Marias heavy blows but the ball went sailing after that, hence only 6 winners.

Dumbass, smitten fanboy that I am, I always look forward to Lena vs Maria matches. "Yay! Two of my faves playing against each other! This is truly going to own!"

Then what do I always get? A friggin' horror show.

By the middle of the second set, Maria had a "Somebody please get me out of this nightmare" look on her face, as if she couldn't believe how shite both her and Lena were playing. Neither Maria nor Lena seemed to be enjoying themselves in the least bit (the crowd seemed to like it though).

The only good things about the match were:

- Maria's confident, if nowhere near brilliant, play for most of the first set, and the way she managed to build a few points to finish them off with easy putaways at the net

- Lena's relentless windscreen wiper defense - that seemed to get to Maria after a while. Maria seemed frustrated, at a loss as to what to do, as as she still does far too often when faced with such difficulties, she switched off her brain and began hitting the ball as hard as she could down the middle of the court

Lena made three tactical options for this match; one was essential, the other shouldn't have worked but occasionally did, and the final one was an unmitigated disaster.

Essential: not letting Maria boss her around too much as she had on the Wimbledon QF. Lena was extremely aggressive with her ROS, hit as deep and hard as she could and whenever possible prevented Maria from taking over the rallies. Of course such a risky game also raised her own UE count, but there was nothing else she could have done.

Shouldn't have worked but occasionally did: attack Maria's BH side. Shouldn't have worked because the BH is Maria's most reliable shot, and BH vs BH contest between Lena and Maria would almost inevitably end in a draw, and finally because Maria could always break the crosscourt pattern by going DTL (which she did on at least a couple of occasions). Worked on occasion because Maria made many more BH errors than she usually does.

Unmitigated disaster: hitting another first serve when she couldn't get the first serve in. I see what she was trying to do: taking risks so as not to give Maria any weak second serves for her to blast away. But Lena should have stopped it as soon as she noticed that her own 1st serve % was very low - the end result was a ludicrously high DF count. Handing over the point right away with a DF is always worse than providing your opponent with a piss poor second serve for target practice - who knows? Maybe Maria would go for too much and miss the return. Golden rule: always make your opponent hit that extra shot.

Besides the BH errors, Maria had trouble with the hectic, borderline insane pace of the rallies, but not as much as one would expect considering the differences in footspeed and agility between her and Lena. Actually, she won a fair number of those high intensity rallies. But this match again showed that she really needs a high 1st serve % to keep herself afloat.

Good win for Masha, despite the fact that her serve was way off in the 2nd set. She only got about 30% first serves in in that set.

I think both players were nervous, with it being the first match at the YEC, and Elena being the last player to have defeated Masha. Maria came through though, and knows she needs to improve for subsequent rounds.

Sharapova's becoming a better player.... and unless Sharapova is having an off day, Dementieva really REALLY REALLY needs to bring it to beat her. It was nice to see all that running from her today though... she was fighting, just couldnt win.
