Personally I would love to see:

Group A: Justine, Svetlana, Nadia, Martina
Group B: Maria, Amélie, Elena, Kim

1st A: Nadia
2nd A: Justine
1st B: Maria
2nd B: Amélie

Semi: Nadia v Amélie = Amélie
Semi: Maria v Justine = Maria

Final: Maria v Amélie = Maria as champion

What would you like to see happen? and what do you expect to see happen?

Here's the deal:

Ame heads Group A, Pova heads Group B

Then JHH and Kuzy are split between groups (by random draw)
Then Kim and Nadia are split between groups (by random draw)
Then Elena and Hingis are split between groups (by random draw)

Two things to remember:

1. If JHH does better than 4th place in her Group, Ame cannot be Year End #1.

2. If JHH reaches the Final, Pova is eliminated in the quest of Year End #1 and JHH takes it.

Now put your groups together in "possible" combinations to achieve your objectives. Not only is the YEC title at stake, but also the Year End #1 spot for JHH, Ame and Pova fans. Enjoy.

UDACHi,

I was fooled at first, too. But this is the deal, I know because I looked it up: The Race is used for ENTRY into the YEC but the WTA Rankings are used for seeding. See the 2006 Official Rules on the WTA Tour site.

I read the rules too but came away with a different interpretation. Very confusing. I don't think the rules are well written.

J-Fan,

What makes it confusing is all the irrelevant stuff in between the answer. Read them again and eventually your interpretation will coincide with mine.

I'll make it easy for you and provide the relevant passages.

Entry into the YEC is based on the Race. Page 161 of the 2006 Official Rules on the WTA Tour site states, I added the bolding for emphasis:

The players earn entry into the singles competition of the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour Championships based on Ranking points accumulated from the first through last Tournament (prior to the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour Championships).

However, the seeding is based on the WTA Rankings as described on Page 163 of the 2006 Official Rules on the WTA Tour site. Again, I added the bolding for emphasis.

4. Seeding

Players or teams will be seeded based on the WTA Rankings current the week prior to the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour Championships.

Concerning distribution into the two Groups:

a. Place seed 1 in Group A and seed 2 in Group B

b. To determine the placement of the remaining seeds, draw in pairs as follows:

Seeds 3 and 4 (place first drawn seed in Group A, remaining seed in Group B)

Seeds 5 and 6 (place first drawn seed in Group A, remaining seed in Group B)

Seeds 7 and 8 (place first drawn seed in Group A, remaining seed in Group B)

This scheme actually makes some sense after sufficient time to think about it. The Race Entry criterion was set to encourage and reward players to appear in many tournaments.

The seeding uses the WTA Ranking because it still includes last year's YEC results where as the Race doesn't - that's the only difference between the two at that point. This rewards players who appeared in last year's YEC.

It works out fairly for the players in the end.
